Human males
Have you tried using the sliders? Really, I do not understand this complaint. If you just aren’t comfortable with using sliders, here are some suggestions for more masculine looking features. Of course, different heads will need different degrees of adjustment.
- smaller, narrower eyes
- smaller iris
- lower, more angled eyebrows
- wider mouth, not too full
- wider bridge and base of nose (no dainty little noses)
- nose length should not be too low (nose close to mouth = cute trait)
- wider jawline
- longer chin
Hair: avoid the longer styles, and choose more natural colors that coordinate well with the skin tone.
If you’ve already tried all that, then what can I say, you can’t please everyone. Hope you can make a character you like.
There’s plenty of options to make a masculine looking human. In most cases, the people who whine about this sort of thing are either using tunnel vision on the feminine options or are waltzing into the character creation with unrealistic expectations. I’d bring up the issue of the mainstream media warping the definition of masculine, but that’s a can of worms I’d rather not open unless necessary.

Some of my characters. Granted, the second guy is a bit slim but since when has a bulky physique been required to be masculine? If people are complaining about a lack of masculine options, they either have a skewered perception of what men actually look like or they confuse being ugly for being “masculine”.
Now, it’d be nice if you could age your characters appearance in a less binary way, especially for females. But the existing customisation options allow for a nice breadth of human characters. Yeah, the game focuses on attractive characters. So what? There’s enough ugliness in the world, so a game can avoid forcing one to play it. I do wish you could give your male characters a big bulge in their undies though, like you can give females big breasts, but that’s for another topic.
Wacha talking about? This is the only game that comes with the Clint Eastwood face.
I agree OP, Ive used the sliders, and Ill say it definitly helped a lot, but I still keep thinking I look too much like an effeminate elf, especially when Im standing next to a norn >.<
use the clint eastwood face. (probably the only one that doesnt look like a porcelain doll)
make jaw, brow, nose bigger/wider/more protruding.
lower eyebrows, use facial hair.
best i can do to help u.
The ‘Clint Eastwood’ face is overrated. It’s hardly the only masculine face available for human men. If you can’t be bothered to play around with the sliders then you’re not going to get very far no matter which race you decide to play.
I have no problem with human males, I think a lot of people, especially gamers, from what I’ve seen over the years, equate big and ugly with manly and slim and beautiful with feminine. I have seen plenty of beautiful men in RL that also look very manly. I’d recommend broadening your perception of manliness. Are most human male faces beautiful? Yes. Do they look “feminine”? Not really, youthful maybe, but not feminine. Beauty sells, and most games nowadays are moving away from only making female characters beautiful and are catering to a wider range of audiences. That being said… I think that more variation of faces, not just for humans but for all races would be good.
Here’s a pic of my human, I consider him beautiful, but I really see no femininity in him.

Well doesn’t anyone look like a little effeminate when standing next to a Norn?
Well, anyone but Clint Eastwood that is.

Uh, no…not really. Humans have realistic proportions, the norn just border on comical…especially considering that many of their faces have some of the issues people are complaining about with some of the human faces.

What is wrong with people these days. >.<
Korean popstar? Oh, I wish! I won’t have a male human or norn because they’re all so… well… not pretty.
Most of the faces look very rugged and manly, like from a western.

I want to make a male char that looks like Arnold. Is there such an option?

Lol.
Seriously, though…you can make a decent looking male. Some of the defaults are a bit androgynous, if not downright feminine. I was really happy with how my human male turned out, though.

I tried.
Can I just say that I dislike all of them and the proportions are all over the place. The one in the third looks like a duck o_O
It’s possible to make a manly character but the default faces do look rather awful. I wouldn’t mind if they added a few more customisation options (to all of the races).
Here’s my guardian. The eyes could be a bit smaller but overall I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out.
More manly human males and less girly females, yeah we need this

and what’s wrong with being rugged? some men like it rugged.

Eh, the “proportions” are fine. I find them appealing.

As long as you’re not conflating it with a) being old or b) having a shaggy beard.
More actual facial hair is needed.

:)
And, naturally, at character creation, I duly selected Clint and proceeded to create my character. However, while he looks brilliant when out and about doing his stuff, his face looks really weird (to me) during all the cut scene conversations in that “side on” pose. His face, ruggedly handsome in all other situations, looks bloated in profile with a caved-in centre.
It quite put me off playing him and I’ve gone eFemale for the majority of my alts!
…it’s a minor detail, I know.
I can understand that some people don’t want to play ugly or old characters. But I don’t like playing super hansom or pretty guys – especially the ones in guild wars because they kind of look like Ken dolls.
But I don’t know why the ugly heads are even select able since they’re there.
And I would probably delete my level 61 or so (Not entirely interested in the rush to 80) warrior if I could get a guy that looks like this awesome guy.
Don’t be deleting any high level characters because you change your mind about the way they look. I’m sure eventually ANet will have an ability to change your looks via the gem store just like in GW1!
Anyway my human male characters look awesome. No complaints here. But of course more options so that everyone is happy is a good thing.
Here’s a pic of my human, I consider him beautiful, but I really see no femininity in him.
Not masculine either.
I like the fact that my thief looks like a dashing princely hero:
I’m the guy on the right of course.

Most men I see in real life do not exude some sort of raw masculinity. They just look…normal. There are some very masculine men, but the majority just look normal. Beautiful does not equal feminine, then again masculinity is in the eye of the beholder so it’s hard to please everyone. More face options would be good then I suppose.
Is that Lucius Malfoy?!
well i want skinnier twink boy characters.
I want better looking gear for human male. Light armor is not good on him, I want a sex change option for my human because I can’t find nothing to please my taste. Women always get better looking gear, but most Korean game usually do make nice looking male gear.

Most men I see in real life don’t look like prepubescent boy models either. But currently the options in this game are heavily in favour of human males of androgynous and feminine appearance.

That first one looks a bit odd. The rest are great though. My human guardian looks really young haha.

Ah, the human ladies and the gents in this game both tend to look very youthful and good looking, so kudos to Anet for at least not going the route of men = big ugly lunks and women = pretty young things.
I was playing around in the character creator and tried to make what is arguably the prettiest, most youthful looking face into a somewhat masculine looking character. I couldn’t bring myself to make him ugly, but at least he looks like a dude? xD I used that basic face for my human male character too, actually, but he’s undeniably a pretty boy so I won’t post him here.
-snip-
I think we have different standards for “pretty”.
A few of the default faces do look a little too soft for my taste, but there is plenty of potential for creating something more rugged.
Here’s my guardian, for example:
Its like there’s too much Oestrogen in the human water supplies or something.

Haha, well, the one I posted is “pretty” too, but I was just trying to show how much of a difference sliders can make by using that particular pretty baby face (the default for male Elementalist). Now these fellas, I would not consider pretty. These are the kind of looks I’m thinking of when I say that you can make guys that don’t look pretty and that look like, well, guys.
Frankly, I’m glad they didn’t go the route of huge, overmuscled, ugly males for humans in this game. I understand some games are trying to appeal to men with such builds (superheroes, anyone?), but combined with the females that look like they’d break if the guys walked into them, it’s jarring. In Wow, I always wanted to take the human ladies aside and tell them to make peace with the Horde so they could trade up to the Blood Elf men. I’m happy with how my guy came out, but if they wanted to add more face features to make men ugly, nothing wrong with that. But don’t mistake ugly for “manly”.
Agreed with the above, but even blood elves fell short of their awesome concept art.
That first one looks a bit odd. The rest are great though. My human guardian looks really young haha.
Yeah I’ve re-designed him since. ^^
What I don’t understand is why Anet withheld alot of the human faces. There are at least 5-6 male human faces on NPCs that we didnt get.
Why?
I have no idea. But Anets art team seems to get a raging kitten for using celebrity male faces as options rather than using the faces they designed themselves.

Yeah, it’s a little disappointing. I do hope we see more character customisation options made available in the future for all of the playable races. Hopefully Arena Net are working on it, considering it was one of the major points of discussion during the beta period. Some official confirmation would be lovely!
I’m not asking for overly muscular man. I’m only asking to be able to make an “older” man. Something that doesnt look like the teenagers I work with, but more like the men I see in the streets. Regulare looking guy of all ages.
Same goes to the females…or even the norn. Even if you take the oldest looking face, it is still too “Ken” like, to pretty to be close to a real guy would look like. I mean… we are fighters, we are people who dedicated their life to fighting. We should be able to look a bit older than mid-teens with muscles (or early 20’s.)
I’m a 28 years old guy, I look about 15 years older than the caracters we can create. That’s not normal. Nothing comes close to what a real 30-40-50 years old would look.
Seriously? The human males look like K-Pop stars?
Not even close.
In my opinion, gw2’s character customization should have been way more detailed. For example: Tera let’s you go all out when it comes to this. I would have liked it much better if we could make our characters rugged or beautifull to the extreme.
Oh, how I love those sliders…
Honestly, every single male face preset available to us at the moment is too manly for me. Even the handsome ones.
And this is coming from a straight male 18 year old kickboxer. Go figure.
Nisteria: … Too.. manly? I mean, they look like mid to end teenagers. If that is too manly, than you are talking about playing a character close to the one of Kingdom Heart?
It’s ok with me if you want that. In fact, we should be able to play the type of character we want! Young or old, skinny or fat, beautifull or not.
I mean, that’s how life is. People are different and we want to play different characters.
Let me play my mid-50’s characters and I’ll let you play your mid-teens! :P
And this is coming from a straight male 28 years old boxer. :P
Nobody will ever agree om masculinity vs femininity on character’s appearance. I myself don’t like the stereotyping. Make whichever character you like; from my own experience (and as shown by many above) one could make “rugged”, “ugly”, “beautiful”, “ugly”, “masculine”, “feminine” characters of all sorts, including humans. Sometimes it’s too realistic, in a way, being faces we would probably see in our day and age rather than in a fantasy setting, but that is also OK, because somebody may want just that. I remember creating/deleting my male human mesmer quite a few times until he was “perfect” to me to know that characters can be made to look very realistic, old, experienced, epic, “normal”, etc. and that there should be models to please most of us, whether you look for supposedly “manly” sprites or so called “feminine” aesthetics in male models.
I actually like that we have options so that not all characters look “manly”, because I can’t relate to the “macho man” stereotype, nor do I want my human character to look like that, but there are ways to create a very traditional male in this game for those who are very conservative (which is OK, and no offense is meant.)
