humans used spears for thousands of years. the human body adapted to throwing spears.
so why can’t humans make spears in gw2? why must we try to stand toe to toe with norns and charrs while we swing tiny swords and try to swing heavy hammers when we should be throwing a spear into their chests

i say no more! i say we need our spears!

Because Norn would just be as adept at throwing spears too due to their similarities with humanity.

surely the norn aren’t as dextrous as humans? Bigger limbs = lex flexibility = worse throw rotation = less proficient at spear throwing?

Norns would also be easily able to throw a spear that is 3 or 4 times as big as a human person. 1 Shotted by giant Norn Spear.

By their portions they are just larger humans, which means their proficiency throwing a spear would be about the same as a human’s. Of course the Norn would craft larger sized spears in accordance to their size, which will inflict more damage as Atiar mentioned.

I do miss my Paragon in GW1. Well, mostly I miss the idea of throwing spears. It was a fun weapon mechanic; one you don’t see too often in games, to be honest.

I think there should be two types of spears introduced in this game:

1. Polearms or halberds for the heavy classes. It’d be a melee weapon, obviously. Anet could use some animations from warrior banners, now that I think about it.

2. Throwing spears, javelins, or harpoons for lighter classes. Magically-charged javelins for elementalists would be nice, kinda like how the magic bow works in Dragon’s Dogma (if you’re a magick archer). I’d love for my water-ele to throw hydro-javelins (I like water-based skills more than ice). Plus, it’d give elementalists another physical weapon choice besides just daggers.

So yeah, that’s a bit of what I’ve got. I’m still waiting on those spears, Anet! ;D

I maintain that Norn builds tend to be slightly bulkier than human builds. Only slightly granted.

Also if throwing spears were implemented I don’t see why they shouldn’t be given to heavy classes. I mean Guardians lack strong ranged attacks, I don’t think people would want another melee weapon (as cool as a halberd would be) but rather more a throwing spear. Plus Guardians are a blend of GW1 Monk/Paragon and it was the Paragons who used the throwing spears originally (and also wore heavy armor)

I’m not saying heavies shouldn’t have throwing spears. I can see guardians using throwing spears while warriors use melee spears like halberds or something similar. I’m mostly on the idea of elementalists using throwing spears, but I’d like to see other classes get them as well.

I do agree that I can see lighter classes having throwing spears too. The one that jumps to mind is Mesmer but that might be because of the hoards of GW1 Mesmers rocking Voltaic Spears back in the day that the image has stuck. Fingers crossed these get implemented as weapons in the first place!!

Spears… Spears. Spears…! Spears! SPEARS! BWAHAHAHA! I allow you to prepare your throw – I’ll just take aim on you with Iron Legion’s gun.

Dude, how is that any different than preparing a bow? Heck, that actually takes longer!

1. Assume a shooting position
2. Nock an arrow
3. Draw and anchor the bow
4. Aim
5. Release the string
6. Follow through

And yet here it is, bow-users alongside gun-users, and in the context of Guild Wars, nothing seems out of place. Not to mention spears can already be used underwater. By your logic, why should anyone use swords, hammers, or any other melee weapon when everyone can just shoot them with “Iron Legion’s gun”?

Nice attempt at mockery, bookah, but you’re way off the mark here. Spears and javelins would be an awesome addition to this game!

Doesn’t the warrior have the ability to throw his spear underwater?

If you can read this then it is proof that ArenaNet’s moderators just, kind and fair.

By using logic including additional melee weapons make more sense for the game to including additional range weaponry, particularly javelins and other types of thrown projectiles. In a prolonged battle ammunition for bows and guns are spent quite rapidly, ammunition for throwing javelins and spears would be exhausted even more rapidly. For this reason it is logical for soldiers equipped with range weapons to also carry a melee weapon. While a javelin or throwing spear can double as a melee weapon, the limit of javelins and spears the soldier can carry into battle limits it role in the modern Tyrian battlefield. Of course from a game mechanics perspective there actually little reason, beside perhaps the time required to create the animations, for any weapon to be excluded as game mechanics make ammunition inexhaustible.
