Dunno what happened. Did you do some WvW or leveled your crafting professions?
If you still have problems then go and level into another race starting zone or do some WvW.

Same here, my lvling was a little slow. Always seamed a lvl or two behind. After done starting zone, I went to other starting zones (good for crafting/gathering too)Now I am a head of lvling and yes you get scaled down, but always a lvl or two a head now.

You know you can run through the content of the other races as well?

Just pop into the PVP “mists” area on your (H) Hero screen, complete the quick tutorial (if you haven’t already) and right in front of you is a gate to Lion’s Arch. From there you can reach other gates that will take you to all other racial starting areas.

I found exploring these areas and participating in a few events was enough to get help push me to the recommended levels.

Have you been gathering crafting materials? Especially early on just having tools and gathering stuff while you’re wandering around can account for several levels by the time you complete a zone.

Similarly if you have materials or money to spare just doing some basic crafting can net you a level or two.

Completing a city exploration can net you a level so if you’re a bit behind it’s worth it to just go play tourist and explore a city.

However sometimes there’s really no good explanation for why you’re not leveling in line with the zone’s difficulty, maybe you’ve just been missing all the events in your travels, etc. When this happens the best thing I’ve found is to just start up in another similar leveled area, there’s always at least one or two other areas in the same general level range so if you hit a wall in one area you can make up the slack in another.

If you’re thinking the renown hearts and things on your map equate to finishing a zone, you’re mistaking it. Look at triggering the dynamic events. Helps if you play in a group.

But regardless, if you feel you’re behind, you can do every other starting area, if you want to focus on renown hearts and map completion.

Ok, I ran into the same problem with my Elementalist and this is what I did to get over that “hump”:

1) Moved over to the Charr starting zone for a couple of levels. You will most likely do this type of thing a few times over the course of your character’s life. Also, its a good way to get more skill points when you start to run out of them in the human area.

2) Work on trade skills. I use this to give myself an XP bump as well as making gear that my character can either use right away or can bank for a couple of levels to use later.

3) Make sure to gather things as you’re out running around. It may be small XP individually but over time it will add up.

4) Make sure to do the dynamic events. Often times these events will chain into multiple ones so you can get quite a bit of XP if you do them all. Also, remember that the events are repeatable so if you find one that gives quite a bit of XP do it a few times to get that little boost you may need.

Hope that this helps and have fun !!

Yeah, I only run human characters – stuck in GW1 mode, I guess – and I have run into this problem on every single character I have created.

Even Crafting and Events are not enough XP to get you to match your storyline. It is a balancing issue with the human area that doesn’t exist in a couple of the other regions. But the solution is pretty easy.

  1. Go to Lion’s Arch via the Asuran Gateway in the Citadel of Divinity Reach;
  2. From Lion’s Arch, use another Asuran Gateway to go to another racial starting location (1-15 Level) (I highly recommend the Sylvari and Norn areas, as their starting areas are really nice. Sylvari wins by a hair because they have Morgan’s Leap.)
  3. Treat this area like you did Queensdale. Do all the heart quests and events and skill challenges you find.

This should easily get you to a level matched with your storyline. But I suggest you take it one step further: level past your story line. Although the storyline is fun and exciting, it is also (1) imbalanced – depending of course on the storyline – against particular classes of characters and (2) disjointed as you have to play for several hours between each instance.

To fix these issues, I have gone to leveling up significantly past the storyline, then playing several storyline instances in a row until my level is dead even with the storyline. Then I will again level for a while. It keeps the storyline continuous and the level advantage I have makes otherwise difficult instances simple.

This is by no means the only way to accomplish your goal, but I have found it to be one of the most enjoyable.

It’s how much of a completionist you are I guess. Maybe the human starting area is just more prone to being under-levelled. I found my levelling was pretty even – story was too high, cleared bits of the map, story again, next story too high, cleared more of the map, repeat. I always clear daily achievements every play, not skipping harvesting, not ignoring crafting, and getting map completion.

You can get 2-3 quick levels by 100% exploring all the racial cities and Lion’s Arch. As a human you already start out right in front of Divinity’s Reach, which conveniently has a portal to Lion’s Arch, which then of course has portals to all the other cities.

Exploring a city takes 15-30 minutes, maybe a little longer depending on how much difficulty you have with the Vistas (Lion’s Arch are in my opinion some of the most puzzling I’ve found in 57 levels). But its free, easy XP.

You will most likely have to zone hop a couple times. Clear a few extra starting areas to get a few levels ahead of your story and you shouldn’t have many problems down the road keeping up.

Make sure you have 100% map completion of Queensdale & Divinity’s Reach. Good XP and some rewards. Also, go thru the Asura gate to Lion’s Arch and check out the other race’s starting zones. Each has a few quick, close skill point challenges that offer XP just getting there in further exploration, plus dynamic events and gathering. At your low level, getting more skill points is clutch, as it will allow you to unlock more utility skills in deeper tiers earlier.
With my ranger, for instance, I went skill point chasing/pet-taming. Leveled from probably 8-15 that way, exploring new areas, doing DEs, hearts here & there, and killing & gathering. By the time I got back to my story, I was way ahead level-wise and could progress nicely a few chunks at a time. Made the story feel more fluid too.

Sometimes I run a new area (waypoint to way point, some POI’s) if I’m not ready to be there to make up the diff.

On another note, I took my lvl 70 human to help a friend through the Sylvari starting forest and gained a complete level in about 45 min. doing renown quest and a healthy amount of dynamic events. This game gives out exp. like candy, shouldn’t be too hard.

I didn’t leave Queensdale until level 23 on my Guardian. I’m almost level 30 and at like 55% completion for Kessex Hills. A guildie of mine didn’t leave Queensdale till level 32.

Just providing the other end of the spectrum here for those readers who might read this and think that levelling is broken. It’s not.

Yours is such a ridiculous exception though, that it’s not even worth mentioning. You obviously did a ton of things that had nothing to do with the Queensdale zone or that the average player would not, like excessive crafting, WvW, exploring major cities (don’t know if you consider this leaving Queensdale or not), or fanatically hunting down every single event even if it takes you across the entire zone.

I myself just completed Queensdale this morning. When I started it I got my gathering tools right away, and barring going unreasonably out of my way I hit up every node I came across. Any event that sprang up near me, I did. I even spent a while chatting in Map and doing the same event over and over between bouts of just sitting on a nearby rooftop. On top of that I spent a while grinding mobs to get my underwater skills unlocked, which for an Elementalist is four sets. I’ve also done my story anytime It’s not red to me, and after all that I’m still not even level 15, which is the highest recommended level for Queensdale itself.

I’d expect that the average player wouldn’t be nearly as obsessive about gathering as I am, and wouldn’t necessarily be of the mindset that you don’t leave a zone until you’ve gotten the 100% completion reward. They might do a little crafting that I didn’t, but that’s barely going to negate the previous two points if at all. The human starting zone plainly needs an across-the-board boost to experience gained, because it’s not just at the end, but rather the entire time that I’ve been barely scraping by with only one level-appropriate heart available to me at any given moment.

It’s actually really weird to me that you would come into the thread with such an anecdote. You know that both you and your friend (especially your friend) did something far and away beyond what the average player would, and yet are acting like you’re just another valid example of what might be after completing Queensdale. To add 16 entire levels of experience to what I just did, you’d have to be constantly queued for WvW and then put concerted effort towards nothing but running around, rotating gathering and crafting. I can barely fathom doing that for 16 levels straight out the gate. Moreover, that has nothing to do with Queensdale itself, and isn’t remotely reflective of what can reasonably expected of the average player going through the first zone of their new character.
