Is it for land? Money? Did someone knock over Thackery’s cupcake? All I know is that I start off and there’s some centaurs and it says kill them.

Around level 30ish you get your story line quest and it takes you (at least the vigil does) to the other side of the continent and I assume you just forget the whole war with the centaurs…….am I missing something?

There’s a Durmand Priory enclave in Divinity’s Reach that has a short history of the war.

Short form is that the centaurs were driven out when Kryta was formed, with some or all of modern Kryta having formally been centaur territory. Until recently, this basically just manifested in the form of the occasional raid from the displaced tribe(s), but when the Modniir tribe was largely ousted from the Shiverpeaks they united the other tribes and escalated the conflict from raids to a full-on invasion.

The final event chain for the Harathi Hinterlands ends with the death of the Modniir Ulgoth, who is named elsewhere as the Modniir war leader and overlord, and the centaur war is rarely referenced in higher-level content. Thus, while ArenaNet hasn’t exactly made it clear, it seems likely that the invasion was fairly decisively beaten back before the first Battle of Claw Island, but the Seraph are still busy consolidating their victories.

To those who think Scarlet hate means she’s succeeded as a villain:
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.

In GW3 the Devourers will be a sentient species driven out of their territory by humans.
But seriously, this just shows you have to me more thorough with cleaning up the lands you occupy. Like the Charr, they at least know this.

I’m pretty upset that this is a major conflict and that we have to fight for the side of the queen. It’s not uncommon in western games, but it’s sad to see it so blatantly incorporated into the story.

I play human characters for their aesthetics, but their story line is just so problematic. Invading a space and brutally killing off another race that had been living there for generations. Then the humans claim the land as their own and continue to oppress the centaur clans in the surrounding areas. Not simply defending Divinity’s reach, but actively carrying out campaigns to further annihilate the centaur ranks.

So, the war is not fought over precious resources or an ancient disagreement, but rather the centaurs trying to reclaim the land that was stolen from them.

I wish there was a branching story line that let you aid the centaurs.

Same spiel the Charr have/had against the Humans, basically. What sort of end would you prefer in this particular war, though? If you go with the centaurs’ demands, the Humans would either have to leave completely (to… Orr?) or subject themselves to slavery and/or death.

Through a story chain (probably involving meeting centaur leaders/elders), have the queen ultimately concede that the centaurs were on the land first, and enact laws that allow centaurs to enter Divinity’s Reach (and surrounding territories) without penalty. In fact, an uninhabited district currently exists in Divinity’s Reach. Similar to Elder Scrolls games, there would be bickering between the races, with many humans just showing outright racism to the integrated centaurs. I think ideally, a third force would enter the fray, forcing humans and centaurs to work together in an effort to drive out this third power. Then, with a new integrated population, centaur culture would permeate the strictly-human zones. Anet writers would really need to flesh out the history and flavor of centaurs.

Not sure if we’re talking about the same thing. I’m saying that centaurs were there first, and then Human settlers came and drove them out.

From Wiki page on Centaurs: “…hostilities with humans began in 300 AE when Kryta was settled by Elonian humans.”

That implies that centaurs were living on the land prior to Human settlement.

Actually it doesn´t, it says hostilities began
“they claim that they are warring for territory, and hostilities with humans began in 300 AE when Kryta was settled by Elonian humans”

It does not state the Centaurs lived in Kryta and even less that they were brutally killed off. Kryta might have been mostly uninhabited with nomadic centaurs roaming the continent (everything we see in game points at a nomadic lifestyle), and humans just settling and building and making babies until one day the Centaurs found there movement restricted by cities and what all not.

It doesn´t even matter if there lived Centaurs in Kryta 1000 years ago, the humans that live there now haven´t been brutality killing them, but have been living in Kryta for generations ….

It also shouldn’t be ignored that the main aggressors of the centaur tribes, the Modniir, against humans aren’t even native to Kryta – they are native to the Shiverpeaks. They were pushed out of the Shiverpeaks into Kryta, and there they subjugated the Tamini and Harathi centaurs and urged them to go all-out war on the humans. That’s not to say the Tamini and Harathi didn’t have conflicts with humans, but the lore states that they were primarily urged into the conflict out of fear of the Modniir and their leader, Ulgoth.

Given Ulgoth’s disposition, I don’t think he would ever accept any sort of peace agreement with the humans. He wants them dead so he can claim their land for himself – and even if it was once Harathi and Tamini land, it was never Modniir land. Ulgoth clearly wants dominance and power, not justice.

That said, with Ulgoth defeated at the end of the Harathi Hinterlands event chain, I wonder if they’ll ever advance the story with the centaurs. I would really like to see Anet implement future content for a (very slow and gradual) move towards some sort of peace between humans and centaurs. It shouldn’t be quick or easy, but with Ulgoth dead, I think the possibility exists.

Not simply defending Divinity’s reach, but actively carrying out campaigns to further annihilate the centaur ranks.

There’s a saying that goes “Invulnerability lies in defence, the possibility of victory in the attack”. The status of the Harathi Hinterlands is actually ambiguous – at least part of it was Krytan in GW1, even though we weren’t able to get there, so it being ‘centaur territory’ possibly simply comes from it being the first province to fall.

More significantly, though, simply holding Divinity’s Reach would mean forfeiting the rest of Kryta. Even stopping the counterattack at some arbitrary border point would just let the centaurs rally again. To get a lasting peace the side that’s more willing to engage in war needs to be forced to the negotiating table, and right now that’s the centaurs. There’s some evidence that this may change – there’s a centaur in Lion’s Arch who saw the writing on the wall with the charr-human treaty, and the Ulgoth’s death will have strengthened his position – but for the first half of Guild Wars 2, the centaurs felt they were just a few steps short of total victory and weren’t going to settle for anything less.

But it says nothing about who initiated the hostilities, only that 300 AE was the time when hostilities between the two races began.

It’s kind of a chain thing. When Jormag drove the Norn south, they drove the Centaurs out of the Shiverpeaks, and that’s when they really started to raid Kryta in earnest. There were also Centaur tribes in the Maguuma jungle who were planning to attack the humans in Kryta 250 years ago, but you defeated their leaders for a mission bonus.

They’ve got a ceasefire with Lion’s Arch, but that’s purely so that they can be free to attack Kryta without Lion’s Arch intervening. They’re not even holding to their side of the agreement (they’re supposed to be leaving caravans on the Lionguard-defended commerce routes alone, but they’re still attacking them).
