I dislike the new staff
In short, yes.
It was the same in GW1, and the same with light armor and staff/focus/scepter in GW2. They just seem to have different aesthetic rules between melee and casters.
They seem to hate casters having any flare. Yet the professions of necro/elementalist/mesmer aren’t over the top? Especially necros, and there’s virtually no “death/horror” gear in the game. It’s a shame and more reason to just open up all armor/weps to all classes over time and let people choose how the heck they envision their character, not be stuck on a rigid system of looks.
- Aetherized Staff
- Sovereign Staff
- Champ. Staff (monsoon)
All horrible.
Maybe, MAYBE, the sovereign staff could be viewed as minimal sleek etc.
But honestly, where’s the love. =/
Here’s t hoping there are other’s out there waiting to be found on some other champs.
Edit – List of the only worthwhile skins imo (big TY to Anet for these btw):
- Crossing
- Jade
- Ebon
- Final Rest
-Guild Pillar
- Nightmare, Peacemakers, Dragon’s Depth, Fractals

A lot of staves do seem to look like wooden chair legs glued to a long pole.
There is so much potential with how you can clad, top and wrap a staff that I am also a bit perplexed by the lack of creativity with staff design.
Took a hand at thinking up some staves last night. It’s actually really limiting and frustrating. I used to think ANET was just lazy but I don’t blame them anymore.
Oblyth, Mes ~ Nadeshiko Naito, War ~ Hwertu, Gua
Evenree, Necro (M) ~ Ran Still Died, Thief
I agree with your sentiment. I saw the staff skin and was like really? But not like the others are anything exciting either.
I think a lot of weapons in GW2 look awful to be honest. They don’t need to be glowy and sparkly to be good btw.
From Aion (i would really like if our maces stopped being tiny stones on sticks):

Aion weapons are beautiful yes, but sometimes also somewhat too flashy..
The Knights Temple [TKT] — Aurora Glade
“It doesnt have effects… Ugly”
This is what most people think, but i agree. Its not cool either.
But i think most staves are supposed to be Beatiful, rather than cool kitten looking
If the staves where cool all the females would complain. For the males we have hammers, swords and greatsword, and the females have sceptre + staff…
They should add more variety, but this is sadly how Anet thinks
I always viewed the ghastly staff to be a very nice staff. As for every other staff, well, they’re not so nice compared to it.
I find it ironic that staves have less magical appearances than greatswords. I kinda liked this staff, but I would like more magical variety in their looks.
Anet loves spoiling warriors.
End your post there, and follow it up by “Izzy likes them”.

I liked the aetherized one… though it wouldn’t fit any of my characters.
I’d add to that list (personal preference, though):
- Ghastly
- Guild Staff
- Pact Quarterstaff
- Super (though doesn’t fit everyone, I used it for a while on my mesmer, replaced by jade)
- Zenith
wrapped up in some crazy ritualist hoo-ha from Cantha.
A real grab bag of ‘you can’t hurt me. They’re called Guardians.
See, one of my favourite staves is actually this one: Channeling Staff from GW1
It’s primal and simple without looking as though it’s held together by prayers alone. Or even the Bo Staff – it’s all about variety for me, and an understated staff like that would be amazing. These are designs from GW1. There’s such a wealth of inspiration there, why not make the most of it?
