Q:
Is solo arena the substitute for dueling?
Game Designer
A:
Queen’s Guantlet is 1v1 challenge against new bosses, not other players.
Solo queue is for 5v5 competitive PVP.
Same as 5v5 conquest, but now it’s split into a premade tournament (Team Arena), and a tournament where everyone joined alone (Solo Arena).

but the gladiatorial arena sounds like dueling.
Solo queue is so individual players can join PvP without being matched up against pre-made teams (you’ll be matched against other solo queue players). Currently both solo and team players are put into the same queue, which can result in very badly balanced matches. This separates the team queues from the solo players so you don’t have that problem.
This is great! It sounds like Arenanet is finally putting true Random Arenas into the game. I’ve been waiting for something like this since launch!
Hehe, nice to see somebody thought the same thing. Random Arenas was where I always got my PvP fix back in GW1. XD (And in fact, I think the devs actually posted stats showing that RA was by far and away the most popular PvP mode in GW1.)
What I would like to know is how do solo rankings work? I dont really tourny much so I dont know how the current system works. Is it based on rank points earned during a match?
That was my first thought, “have the players wish for dueling finally reached the devs!?!?!?” … alas, apparently this isn’t so
More awesome news.Anet you keep surprising me but only in a good way.
What about “The Bane” in Black Citadel. Will the Bane be a gladiatorial arena too?
Btw a real gladiator 1v1 PvP arena would be just awesome

So 1vs1 isn’t one players verus one player? It’s just like Random Arena in Guild Wars 2? And pug vs pug, not like today, where you can get a guild to fight?

Thank you!

Yes, solo arena is the RA of GW2.

fixed for ya
“-and on this occasion I keep mine plate armors”
discussion about offensive/deffensive playstyles
I’m excited about the changes to Solo Queue, because as it is now it’s not worth doing (you get 5 random noobs vs. an elite premade team on voicechat and just get stomped, not fun at all).
Here’s hoping the “Gladitorial Arena” (haven’t seen many details on this yet) really is for dueling.

No need to fix it, a dev on the PvP forum part named it Solo Arena multiple times.

It took them a year to add RA. I hope they’ll add HA and GvG as well at some point in the future, and automated tourneys. Is Anet finally starting to realize that GW1 PvP model was the best?
I just hope syncing in RA (solo queue arena) won’t be possible like it was in GW1. And that you won’t be able to see who is in your roster until the match actually starts.

I think they will learn this the hard way and will be forced by the playerbase to implement those modes.
Btw i don’t think you will find too much syncers. In GW1, if sync failed, you both just left after the match.
But here if you fail it, one of you will lose rating for sure. This may discourage most of the possible syncers.

Solo queue is for 5v5 competitive PVP.
I’m not sure if you realize it, but conquest is boring. Are there any plans to actually implement pvp that is fun/watchable? Right now there are very few viewers, and mostly it’s because conquest is incredibly boring to watch.
We need a 1v1 arena.
How about doing a little experiment. Put in a team death match style pvp, and then let the players choose which one they want to keep DM or Conquest.

Can you tell us what steps you undertook to prevent syncing? This was a massive problem back in RA times.

In RA, if you failed a sync, you just restarted. Here if you fail a sync, one of you will lose rating for sure. So if you will try to sync and fail it occassionally, you won’t get to the top 1,000. Never.

It took them 6 months to implement a soloque with the same gamemode and same maps. So basically the same thing we already have.
New gamemode that people actually enjoy or would expect after GW1? Forget it. Maybe 6-7 years later if they would start it today. But that’s unlikely.
