I don’t like this new mechanical vibe, the grand allure that has brought us to love Divinity’s Reach was its lore, it majestic castle feel and rustic knights. If we want mechanical cities, we have the Black Citadel an the Asura capital. What is to become of the Shining Blade if the queen is to be guarded by robots? Please let Divinity Reach remain a elegant city of the past.

Well – how about this top 10 reasons why we use Robots to Guard the Queen:

1) Robots can’t be mentally corrupted by certain other draconic influences.
2) Defending the Queen is not a risk to sentient life
3) We have a surplus of guard / attack golems left in the wake after defeating certain other elements
4) No additional wages required means the skritt king gets his shineys
5) Swimming swimming swimming all summer long

Well, divinity’s reach has always has the old time watchwork style of technology in place at least in the planetarium and the music machine in the carnival. Also, the wording on the page makes me think that the watchwork mechanisms are some things we’ll be fighting against (kinda like the holograms during dragon bash) to loot the parts needed for the new recipes and items.

Well I look forward to getting my robot-mini. I tried many others but none really give you that right feel for your “aetherblade/steampunk” character

Well as we have not seen the content yet, I keep my hopes high, but to be honest, “modeled after the Queen’s new mechanical sentinels” frightens me, as to what major changes might overcome the city.

The mini shows a naked robotic soldier with bolts for n_ps holding a Halibert so ya they are pretty elegant and sexy. I might be seeing things though.

I see no reason why the robots need to replace the old guard. They can just be supplemental to it, an extra line of defense.

But they CAN be reprogrammed, or be built to override their normal protection protocol to kill the Queen. More than likely by either smart Charr or Asurans.

All this hooplah seems too perfect for an assassination attempt at the queen, and I’m calling it right now, Rox and Braham will be conveniently there to save her and thus elevate their status as more important players in the GW2 world. I thought of this too…unless your character happens to be the first one there and manages to save the Queen first. PLEASE let this happen so we get the credit for being the hero.

Replacing the guard with clockwork knights is just asking for trouble.
Those things going haywire somewhere along the event (2 weeks in) is bound to happen.
How do these npc’s keep falling for this stuff is beyond me.

The way I see it, is yes, technology and science is a big part of GW2, but so is ancient architecture and magic. They had built a good balance of this between the races, and I would like to see this balance preserved. It would be a pity is the beautiful and proud, majestic walls of DR were overcome by gears. Might as well throw aside our swords and have everyone pick up guns. This game is an odd, but strong crossover between a mid-evil fantasy and Sci-Fi, and it would be a pity if that should change.

To some extent that is acceptable, I do understand that divinity reach already employs clockwork in their garden, however I still strongly feel that the humans should remain the mid-evil race, and the Norms the spiritual. If that should falter, it will lose its elements of fantasy and no longer be the same game.

Obviously. I meant that my remarking on his comment was out of place and pointless.

While asura have a ‘magitech’ theme, and charr a ‘steampunk’ theme, humans are more in the side of ‘clockwork’. So they at least look the part.

Considering how spread human forces are and how weakened both Seraph and Shinning Blade are with all the fights against the bandits, corrupt ministry guards, centaur, and also inquest and nightmare court to the west, using the asura idea of automated defense forces doesn’t sound unreasonable.

I just wonder who made them…

Human culture, judging by Divinity’s Reach, looks more advanced that medieval for sure, with a much stronger renaissance bent. Norn are actually much closer to a genuine medieval aesthetic. In any case, clockwork automatons are a strong fantasy archetype, dating back to classic greek mythology where Haphaestus made clockwork women to be his assistants and Talos the automaton patrolled the beaches. The ancients employed a number of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic clockwork effigies in their temples as well, so you could easily argue that clockwork aesthetic pre-datea medieval europe by 1,500 years.

I think you mean traditional fantasy, fantasy these days is a VERY lose term with so many sub-genres and honestly GW2 right from the start never fit the traditional style of fantasy. Divinity’s Reach also fits closer to a Renaissance period, at best the closest is comes to medieval is being a combination of the two periods and even then Renaissance is the stronger of the two by far. In fact I recall Anet stating that was their very goal from the start.

Basically, DR can’t lose what it never had in the first place.

That being said, since I am willing to bet something will go wrong with the clock work soldiers, I doubt they’ll replace her soldiers entirely. Add to her forces? Sure, but replace them entirely? Unlikely

I don’t get it either. It seems to have come out of nowhere. I understand they are under pressures due to casualties with the war on the centaurs, but the Shining Blade were one of the most interesting factions in the game (and a cool throwback to GW1). It seems bizarre for humans to get robots to fight their wars for them. The charr are the industrialists, the asura are the golemancers, robots just seems wrong. One of the most appealing things about humans as a race is their humanity. The conflict and corruption between the Ministry Guard and the Seraph, the political pressures of casualties in the war on the centaurs, the specialisation of the Shining Blade, robots have none of this.

I can see some possibilities if they are gifts from Caudecus. Win popularity with the people by saving lives because they use drones instead of real soldiers while at the same time ensuring he has an army he can control on the inside. I honestly don’t know much about them at this point (maybe less than what is known by others) but it could go in any direction.

I’m hoping these new robot guards get equipped with some charr Gatling guns that we can only use by taking one of them down (and they’re all at least veteran class, so they’re not easy).
Also they are given voice boxes that dish out canned propaganda quotes, and get dressed up to look like previous kings and queens of Kryta.

So, pretty much this.

I can imagine how Jennah reached her decission for mechanical guards:
