Watchwork permanent?
The wording used (latest and greatest innovation in all of Tyria) suggests to me thakittens going to stick around. It doesn’t mention being specifically tied to this event, and that’d be an awfully big claim for something that was only going to be around for a month.
Plus, I know the devs at one point said they wanted to distribute portals to more than just Mesmers. At the time I think they mentioned other professions, but maybe they’ve decided to go this route instead.
That’s all just speculation on my part, though. We’ll have to wait and see how it actually turns out.
If it does work as a mesmer portal then they will soon have 2 portals, hmmm interesting indeed. Cannot wait to see this little gadget!
There has always been a rifle available for karma that functions exactly like a mesmer portal skill.
i doubt its gonna be like mesmer portals, my money is on it working like an asura gate directly to LA(or DR since thats where this living story segment is focused) from anywhere in the world. probably gonna be nearly impossible to get though since that would be a little OP.

This is TRUE….
but a Dev Confirmation would also be useful since this is indeed a Major Economy concern

Er, what? The Experimental Teleportation Gun barely resembles Portal. It can’t be targeted, has a 900 range, and lasts for 5ish seconds.

And cannot be used in dungeons.

There is a new trophy called the Watchwork Sprocket and yes it is permanent.
Can Flame and Frost dyes be reintroduced? The cost of them in the TP is insane.
More steampunk garbage? Le sigh.

Thanks for the clarification, Anthony. It’s always nice when something is a permanent addition.
The GW2 world seems to be going into a more mechanical/steampunk look based on recent living stories. Like sky pirates, sky merchants, and soon watchwork tech.

I’m not really a fan of steampunk, but it hasn’t really “overwhelmed” the world yet. Hopefully ANet can continue to keep it balanced so both steampunk and fantasy fans are satisfied.
Jennah surrounding herself with Watchwork Sentinels… hmm, I get this weird association to the Star Wars pre-quel and the droid armies…
I got a bad feeling about this…

Watchwork Sentinels are queen Jennah personal sex bots!

Don’t be silly. She is obviously getting turned into Dr. Evil. All those Watchworks, are her legions of fembots.
All we need now, is a Charr with a bad accent and teeth…

Actually, that’s a really good thought. I’ve been waiting for a big twist for a while now.
Waiting for Kiel (the good one everyone keeps likening to Kormir & Trahearne) to win the election, emerge from the shadows, and with the help of her band of pirates sieze control of LA, and use her watchwork soldiers to turn on Jennah and lay siege to DR. Hiding in plain site…like the Emperor.

I agree. Steampunk fits rather well in Tyria.

How does steampunk fit with a high fantasy setting? Because they had to force feed it to us from the start because they created these dragons which were described as unstoppable creatures?

In a high fantasy setting it probably wouldn’t. In Guild Wars 2, it fits nicely.

High fantasy could also be high technology that is not realistic.

The Asura made warpgates and whatnot… why is steampunk a stretch? Seems to me kind of like another race’s attempt at technological progression. Considering the patch, it is likely human.

Steampunk != high technology and the Ausran lore has been engrained with high technology that is based in High Fantasy magic, not pure mechanical power. And if ANY of the nations should be based around steampunk it should have been the Charr as the industrial nation. Instead Humans which have never relied on technology all of a sudden have steampunk tech because… well just because.

Because it made little sense for Humans to remain technologically backwards to a point worse than what the Asuras were at 200 years earlier?

Yet the Norn who have been around even longer remain in the stone age of social and technological advancement? Makes sense…
Not every nation needs to be on the cutting edge of technology to exist.

Your puny technology is nothing compared to the might of the Norns.
Well, that’s what the Norns in GW1 would say, they are just some overgrown humans now :/

The Norn were quite advanced once but were cast down. They recovered, better than the Jotun at least, but havent advanced much in the field of technology. Why? Because until recently, the Norn were solitary hunters and didnt work together, thus making advancement as a group unlikely.
Need a confirmation here, is the device soulbound on acquire or can we make it and then transfer to any other character?

Yeah, but the Norn don’t give a rats kitten about technology as is very apparent in everything they do (granted there’s clearly some Norn out there who do). Not to mention that in GW1 Norn were pretty solitary and didn’t even really group up for anything, so why would they have started technology when they are JUST NOW making villages and starting to be less Nomadic?
Not to mention that Humans actually try to be Technologically advanced, just look at Divinity Reaches Garden, and the Circus,. They’re just kinda bad at being at the bleeding edge of tech, they’re not only behind teh Asura but are also behind the Charr, and hell even the Sylvari (according to the Asura) are better off than the humans when it comes to advancements.

Because you can’t wage war for hundreds of years using simple machines without eventually coming up with more complex machines.
Because the entire basis for your society and its primacy (divine magic) is increasingly absent in the day to day lives of its people, and they’re looking for a way to maintain the status quo without it.
Because a recent alliance has created opportunities and discourse with other, more technically adept races.
Because you already had the victorian clothing as a racial aesthetic anyway.
Really, just pick one or any combination of the above.
