Why I am very upset by this Queens Jubilee
The only way structured 1v1 would work is if all stats are equalized and all skill bars are replaced with the same skills for all players (i.e. NO customization at all and your profession does not matter).
It is impossible to balance a game around 1v1 because the professions are all too different.
Now, I’m all for adding in dueling, but there wouldn’t be any rewards attached.
Umm, can’t you just create a custom arena designed for duels? In my limited PvP experience I saw one the other day. (Though they would most likely need to introduce an actual team vs. team instead of capture the hill style of pvp maps first because they’d throw in an easy to achieve dueling system).
Also, if you really wanted to fight up there, then you’d most likely both fall to your doom, at the end of the two minute timer. Besides, the living story is focused on PvE (including jps and PvP esq mini games) not PvP.
Also to throw dueling into PvE would cause a wide range of problems, an unscaled lvl 1 in his starter gear vs. a true lvl 80 in exotics/ascended comes to mind.
Also I haven’t beaten the final boss yet, but its been 2 days….and I’ve only tried about 4 times against her. What is so wrong about having a hard challenge that actually takes some practice and skill to win (they even mention in the livestream that it was designed to be hard so not everyone would get it).
Edit: Also, I saw people with pics of their new minis within ~3 hours of the patch going live. So “NO players” is a bit of an extreme.

Not really, it could just switch the characters to their normal PvP settings.
And we already have a precedent with the Zephyr Sanctum Race.
Everybody was thrown automatically into their PvP gear on entering from the open world.
Spectating on the fights from the PvE open world would be impossible though.

That would not be any fun to have everything and everyone the same. The difference is what makes interesting fights.
Like i said in another thread, the winners of the gauntlet should be able to duel with eachother.

Oh, I know that’s a possibility, but from the tone of the OP it seemed he wanted dueling in PvE (and thus to abide by PvE rules). But my only bit of caution would be that, there are people who most likely would go in and not realize that they’re getting thrown into PvP. I’m sure at least some people have never been to PvP (or at least haven’t gone besides just going to LA for free) and have never bothered to look at/change their gear/traits/stats/accessories/runes/sigils.
And you’re right, I can’t think of a time when one instanced area was visible from outside that instance. You’d have to do something similar to the spectator mode for PvP. Also if you just want to have a duel, with the camera clipping on the dome, that probably isn’t the best place to try it. (I also saw someone mentioned that they were able to pin an NPC boss against the wall with one of their skills, I think it was a Mesmer, which would pretty much suck in any pvp match).
Or… you could buy your arena tickets, make one in the mists and have your little duel. PvP is in the Mists, either tournament or WvW

The difference is what makes the QQ flow and the developers to constantly change the game to try and balance it leading to huge imbalances in other areas of the game.
If you had a 1v1 arena with any kind of reward system attached, class X will always win over class Y because of the mechanics. You have to normalize everything in order to have anything that even resembles “balance” in a 1v1.
That’s why I’m ok with adding dueling, so long as there are NO rewards attached to it.

Custom arenas aren’t part of the “world” and that is my point – this was a world event that everyone could have taken their PvP skillset – and had 1v1 exhibitions in all twelve of the exhibition halls.
If PvP works anywhere in the server, so this would have but it would have allowed US to 1v1 IN the world and showcase a very missed part of the game that should be in PvE for events like this.
And I hate to tell you but custom arenas COST quite a bit – I am on a fixed income, chronically ill and very close to being a shut-in – PvP was what drew me to this game – indeed I spent over six MONTHS almost exclusively doing nothing BUT PvP but found out to my total disappointment that none of my PvP experience would count for any PvE time.
This wasn’t about a custom arena, you mixed something that wasn’t even part of the issue that I was bringing up; this was about showcasing PvP just once, just for very special events where champions can prove to a crowd that they will keep trying even if they are beaten by all contestants.

I don’t believe that the fights would be impossible to view… I think that the fights would be very easy to view since there are only two people at any time in the exhibition hall – and it could be a two out of three or three out of five quick death matches, like you states, with all regular PvP gear.
Not hard at all; the framework is there, someone just has to like PvP enough to allow us to do it.
What about people who don’t PvP?
there is a reason they have those segments of the game basically in separate areas.
The Queens Guantlet as it is, is an enticing concept that has many people playing it. If they had instead done PvP 1v1 arenas up there they would have been putting those in to appease just 1 part of the community. Everyone can have fun 1v1 challenging bosses. Not so much if you made it PVP 1v1’s.

Technically, (and my lore is most likely rusty) PvP (heart of the mist) isn’t part of the world at all (or it’s the past or something like that). And while I’m sure this isn’t true of at least some of the population of WvWers and PvPers, why would they care to come to a PvE event (and have to spend either silver or be part of a zerker mob) to get tickets so they can fight in duels.

I don’t know what you mean by PvP working anywhere in the server. I’m pretty sure every single PvP-esq mini game in the past has always been in its own instance and not part of the PvE world (so I don’t even know if it possible for one instance to be viewable by someone not in that same instance).
I don’t know about any of the cost for the arenas, so I can’t comment on that. But as for your other gameplay related point. Why would PvP progress contribute to PvE? Someone just posted a similar thread, I think in the suggestions forum, I’ll use the same argument I did there. If you expect PvP to contribute to PvE progress, why shouldn’t PvE contribute to PvP progress (why can’t I already be rank 40 in PvP just by running around killing world bosses). PvP was meant to be completely separate from the rest of the game so that someone who buys the game today can fight on an even playing field someone who’s been since last year. If you want PvE progression while doing PvP that’s what WvW is for.

Okay, that I did misinterpret what you were saying. And I can agree that it would be cool to let PvPers show off if they wanted to, but here’s just a couple of problems.
As someone stated, 1v1s can be pretty unbalanced. I know I’m not very good at PvP, and while I can somewhat hold my own, there are certain builds that I can’t beat. And I know some builds/professions are great counters to others, so that could be a problem with implementing 1v1 duels.
But, I think the bigger issue, I don’t think anyone from PvE is really gonna care or want to watch people PvP. People who only PvE will never fight another profession in PvP, and usually the mechanics of the AI are no where near the same as a human, so gaining any useful knowledge is out the window (plus you never fight a 1v1 in PvE unless you can get a champ alone, and then it’s either dps it down or kite it). Also people have been complaining about the dome fights not being instanced from the start. Most people just want to go to their own instance, and retry as often and fast as they can. They hate having to wait in que till its their turn, or to have to wp and run back up the stairs (and also being effected by any lag caused by the mobs/zerg below). People are only watching other people because they are being forced too (or maybe to get tips against a single boss fight), considering the different number of builds available for PvP I don’t think any PvEers are gonna want to or care about PvP duels.
