You don’t need 5 gambits to get the mini. I’m fairly certain there is an achievement, however, where you need to beat a tier 3 boss with 5 gambits on.
Doesn’t really matter too much though. Colin said they are planning on having the Gauntlet return at a later date, and maybe some people can finally get over their achievement OCD.

i think beat tier 3 npc, not beat tier 3 boss.
beat tier 3 boss = achievement + mini
beat tier 3 npc with 5 gambits = achievement
maybe all those boosters i have been saving up will have some use now.
Provided that food/boosters actually work in the Gambit.
I just hope that the Gambit isn’t as hard as T3/4 Trials. (Trying to complete it normally, I mean, not using the cheesy hide-up-the-back-and-pull-Plunderers method.)

I would take my guardian there and pick Exhausted, Squeamish, Tremors, Hamstring and Crowd Favorite, I guess.

And why do you think that’s a bad thing?
A lot of people have been asking for challenging content. This is a nice way to add challenging content, giving a reward that you can actually get somewhere else as well (the Achievement Points).
Unless you think you need to have every single AP in the game (in which case, OCD much?), having different degrees of challenge for different players is a good thing.
