BIG event in cities , not possible.
100% agree with you, fanartur. Its unplayable and not, we aren’t rich and can’t buy a new PC each time the game is updated
Guys, you knew before you bought this game that you’d be required to upgrade your hardware and your Internet connection every month for a major game release.
I mean really, you knew that.
Stop complaining and play the game.
And get a new PC and new connection.
Even with a new PC this event was largely unplayable.
Common Sense dictates you don’t have a mass event where everyone is hanging out already.

i was unable to attack, bandage myself up, and res others in a timely fashion, because i could not see any other players, just the effects of fireballs, auras, and fields. that was a horrible boss encounter for me. might have been better if it took everyone in the area to a private instance, or something.
Dude if you have the right specs to play the game then you can play these events. Also no matter how powerful your machine is, its mainly down to your connection.
My machine is pretty good and I was lagging to, it sorted itself out half way through, so please stop saying Arena.net is catering to those with good machines because they suffered to.
I appreciate them trying something this big I mean I never expected to fight in Lions Arch nevermind another major city.

FPS was fine even in the worst of the event hovering in the high 30s to low 40s for FPS. On the other hand any action other than running around took 5-10s from keypress to actually doing anything. Ability lag is even more frustrating than low FPS IMO as you cant even try to respond.
except, those big events, i have no problem in the game. i’m still happy i can play 98% of the game.
Glad you people see why I hate LA!
My rig is weak and I get lots of lag in Dragon events and WvW. So naturally my least favorite City is Lions Arch where everything takes a whole minute to appear.
Yet I can’t understand why Arenanet is focusing so much on LA, turning every other City into a ghost town! LA already has the mystic forge, the best location at the centre of the map, portal to all other cities, 3 jumping puzzles, the entrance and rewards to PVP, the rewards for the dungeons and aparently now the major payed exclusivity for all 1 time events.
It’s only nattural that all those people whouln’t even think of hanging out on any other City.
Just one city can’t hande all those people, and even if they can, there will be always performance problems. A-net should link the chats, add portal, Mystic forges on the rest of the Cities and add a LFG future.
Also, next time try to share the event in all 5 cities (except LA that it’s a crossroad)
Its not your pc and its not you connection if it was it would be like it all the time its their servers cant handle the load of that much activity in one place same as world v world. I have a high spec machine and an 80 meg connection and still get lag in world v world.

Hectic lag fest
Y’know, they could divide the player base by city (i.e., at event time, you can only enter your home city), and stage the event at each one of those.
Having an event at LA is a disaster.
the fact it was in LA had a bit of an impact on things since it and all the racial cities reduce performance on most PCs less than uber bleeding edge top of the line. Heck even some of those. My friend just built a uber PC like that and he still has a significant performance hit in LA under normal heavy load. For me LA under normal heavy load I get 20-25 fps. In this event I was pegged at 1fps and nothing video or even sound rendered and so I was unable to experience any fraction of the event other than the very brief cinematic(I’m not even sure that rendered correctly as the halloween cinematic failed to render properly), a handful of floaty names, and the LA terrain . I need to check youtube for videos of this event so I can at least experience it second hand. The real problem was the sheer magnitude of players, NPCs, and enemies and several times that amount in skill effects. It doesn’t even compare to WvW as at least that is playable. On my system I get 12-14 fps in WvW zergs of 20-30 v 20-30 with maximum video quality settings. There had to have been 100s of people in LA on all the overflows and the main. Had it been instanced with a manageable amount of players (20 or 30 per instance) then it being LA wouldn’t have been an issue for most everyone.
The home city idea is actually a good one…why do we even have a home city??? My Asura has been to Rata Sum probably once since hitting 80 two months ago and that was to buy a set of cultural gear…no reason to go there…even though I think each city is amazing looking…all that work in designing those cities, for everybody just to sit in LA spamming LFGs…with so far all major events happening there too…I know there is supposed to be some kind of player housing in your city at some magical date in the future…but I assume that will be a portal there anyway and you still won’t go for a stroll through the city

Or you could just spend the money that you’d use on a new PC and buy a whole bunch of gems.
You could then convert the gems to gold and buy pretty much whatever you want in GW2 and ignore the silly events that aren’t really all that interesting.

the problem is at their side not our’s the servers they run it on cant handel it.
Would rather have it personal story instanced really. You get the lore and the story behind the event without so much lag. The even in LA was almost impossible for me to do because heals would no go off and neither would AOE abilities. Great idea to have these massive events. Bad to have the open world. The servers just can’t keep up with the number of mobs, abilities and players. It makes them actually not enjoyable. Further more if done personal story wise it allows it to be better displayed to the player plus available to those who can’t be on for these 1 time events.
This issue is not entirely related to the machine running the client, it boils down to a few things.
1) The game engine. It’s been a known issue for a while that the coding for GW2 is done in such a way that the game actually limits what you see on the screen in crowded areas and it takes awhile before it decides to render everything in your field of view. This issue has been around since Beta. Until these last 2 events it has been most noticeable in WvWvW, in big battles where quite often, regardless of your machine, you cannot see people attacking you. Anet has spoken on this subject before and said that it was going to require a major update to the game engine to fix and that they were trying to figure out the best solution.
2) The delay you experience between key press and resulting action is controlled by 2 things, your connection and the load the GW2 servers are under. This issue has been around since the dawn of MMO. Whether it was the Hamidon Raids in City of Heroes or the Gates of AQ events in WoW I’ve never seen any game server able to stand-up to the punishment of having hundreds of people all in one space. It doesn’t matter if it’s in Lion’s Arch or if they had it take place on some remote island in game (or even in an instance) once you dog pile hundreds of players all spamming their attacks in a small area a server gets clogged. What I’ve never understood is why do Developers insist on doing these kind of events when they know the results are so poor?
If you get disconnected chances are that is your connection not able to handle the amount of data being piped to it. If you have huge delays between keypress and resulting action that could be a combination, but it’s more than likely a result of their servers prioritizing the communication and yours being queued back to the point that it seems like never happens.
Personally I switched from Chat to Event log during the event so I could see when the server was indicating my actions took place. I could see that my attacks were making it through, but I could also see that the client and the server were not syncing which would cause these like my Heal never appearing to be on cooldown though it was.
In the end whether it was those on really high end machines or those on the lowest accepted system (if you are playing with a below recommended system it’s on you) everyone was experiencing issues with latency and Anet should have known this would be an issue.
I wonder how much it will cost me to buy NZ a new undersea cable, because there is nothing I can do to make my internet any better.

It’s not your connection, it’s Anet’s servers and buggy code.
haven’t the devs learnt anything from any other games that have had BIG events in small localised areas especially in the capital areas where player trade/afk/talkcrap. was laggy, unplayable, not fun and no supercomputer or super connection to internet in the world would of had that event run smoothly.
I will have to echo what others said. The event was underwhelming for me due to the lagfest and made it unplayable.
I wish there were more things to do in our respective capital cities instead of all the focusing on LA.
I never participate in these type of events because I know from experience they are lagfests, even if I have a decent PC and connection.
Why can’t an event happen all across the zones and not require us to all be in a city all at the same time? I like how the themed events are done in RIFT where you pick up the quests in your homecity then the quests themselves are done all over the zones (like fighting back invasions, collecting stuffs etc etc,) They are also less confusing. I’ve seen many asking where to go and what to do. I usually love taking part in events, especially the seasonal ones, but I don’t think the ones in GW2 are executed very well.
I think it’s really safe to say that the event that took place in LA, was way worse then a 3way in stonemist castle in WvW. I mean this was a hell of alot worse, it seemed like lag was really bad, i could dodge roll 4-6times with this bad of lag. Guess it’s good that it isn’t like that in WvW. This is network lag i’m talking about by the way.
Would have been way better to limit the main maps and overflow so it wasn’t this bad, unless they fix the engine to handle that many people on screen and the servers.

Very interesting. I knew there was something about all you said, if they try to figure that problem out, it’s going to take many month to fix that issue, we can only hope and wait.
When i knew there would be big events in lion’s arch, i was sure it wouldn’t run smoothly for me but i still tried the event and it wasn’t enjoyable and then gw2 crashed. like other people i got a bit frustrated.
Oh well , i’ll still have other things to do instead of the big fight back in lion’s arch. My system is at the recommended system, just enough to enjoy all the other things besides the big events of lost shores or the dragons events.
What I would have done as a Dev was had a giant Karka attack in every zone with beachfront. I would have had announcements that encouraged players to go to zones that were level appropriate to them with the exception of level capped characters which should have been encouraged, in some way, to spread around and help in lower zones.
If you want one of these events to be successful you want to encourage players to move, not en masse, but as small groups to lots of areas. I think WoW learned from this with their pre-Cataclysm event. Instead of launching a full-on elemental invasion in Stormwind/Orggrimar, they instead had the invasions happening all over the world with level appropriate rewards so that you were encouraged to spread out and look for the events not congregate and wait.
This event would have been so much better if simultaneously the Karka attacked all zones with ocean beach property.
