Anet developers, how about creating a level 80 ‘one time’ per account quest chain that upon completion rewards the player with an account bound pre-cursor, this cannot be sold but can be traded between characters.
Example ~
Quest Giver
I have discovered part of a treasure map, but I have better things to do yadda yadda..why don’t you “The player” hunt for the next part of the map?
The player gets the map which leads them on various chains to complete the full map, something like the scavenger hunt until all the map pieces are complete.
Part II
Upon finding the location of the treasure (Make it so it can be in a different location for each Pre-Cursor) is guarded by a fierce Veteran (Solo) or Champion monster. Player defeats the monster and is rewarded with an account bound random pre-cursor.
Obviously, RNG still plays a part in what you get so if you wanted a dawn and you get The Colossus then, well too bad ~ transfer it to an alt and get working on that legendary since at least know, your 50% of the way towards attaining one.
If they do do this, the quest chain would either have to be very long and hard, or have a large monetary input, or both. If not, then precursors would be nearly worthless.
At the risk of being flamed, EQ2 did this with their legendary class weapons and it seemed to work well, from personal experience.
Each quest was long, had a series of prerequisites steeped in lore and each quest was thoughtfully crafted. As an example, the Swashbuckler quest was modeled after The Princess Bride.
Fascinating approach, I think.

They shouldn’t be worth anything in the first place. The challenge should be getting all the other materials needed to make the weapon. Not needing to have 300+ gold to buy a weapon to make one.
The precursors are one of the materials. So imo, they should be about as difficult to acquire as the gifts, which also require a lot of input. I don’t think is should be a ridiculous amount like 300g of course, but they shouldn’t be worthless either. Something like 50g worth, or a different method to acquire them that takes a good amount of time and/or effort just like the other components.
As someone who played the heck out of both EQ and EQ2, I totally support this idea (loved the class specific mythic chains in those games). Fabricate some lore around the precursors or legendaries and add a very long, difficult chain that rewards an account bound precursor. As it is, grinding for money to get a precursor is rather boring, but an inventive, extended quest chain could be rather fun, depending on its implementation. Besides, anything is better than flushing rares down the mystic toilet hoping to be blessed by the RNG gods.
Note: I think this thread should go in the suggestions forum, not the Lost Shores one.
In video game development there are no ‘easy solutions’ what you’re asking for would require months and months of work and regig the economy of the game in a way that other people would complain about.
Legendary items are not supposed to be easy. They’re legendary.

It’s an open market, so they’re worth as much as people are willing to pay. What amazes me is that people are willing to pay so much for something that really isn’t any better than a common exotic. For example, in many ways, the Bifrost is a weaker staff than than my Carrion Pearl Quarterstaff. It might have a fancy-shamncy skin/animation…but that won’t help take down a champion troll. At a cost of 500+G, 1000000+karma points and 400+ skill points, to make I would expect a legendary weapon, to be , well, legendary…not an exotic with a fancy skin and name. My staff cost ~3G to buy.

I wouldn’t mind even if it costs like 100g to get a legendary, but 300-400g? That’s way out of reach of probably 99% of playerbase.
Well, this doesn’t hold true anymore after yesterday’s event lol.
precursors should have just been left at being extremely rare, maybe a slight tweak to the RGN %s but giving people hundreds of gold in 1 day is just stupid.

There is a flaw in that. Those that still manage to get lucky and get it….still make hundreds of gold in one day!

Probably the reason why ANet handed out precursors in those chest is to pull down the prices, but in doing so they caused a random 10% of the playerbase to become very rich.
Unfortunately I’m not one of the 10%. Sad, but what can I do, start raging like the other stupid kittens? Of course not! Do you get angry at those who won a lottery in real life? Or those who landed on a good business deal that worth millions? No. So grow up people and appreciate the free event.
By the way, I do agree with OP’s suggestion on giving out precursors via a long quest

They should have been a crafting recipe and nothing more. RNG based scarcity is the most aggravating mechanic in MMOS.
If you want to design something to be a grind, make it a grind don’t just reward people with good luck.
I missed out on the event, and got absolutely nothing. Although I envy the ones who were lucky enough to get a precursor, this suggestion isn’t realistic at all.

Those who would want to risk the RGN know what they want and what they are doing. For something like this, its stupid. Having to risk something to get it for a small chance makes it hard for people. With risk, people can also lost hundreds of gold in 1 day and people know that. Also most precursors made in the MF would not be sold.
If people are able to make hundreds of gold in 1 day by forging precursors then the game is broken. But since the chances are slim, the distribution is wide enough so that its very unlikely that people would be able to get a precursor without a large investment.
This event requires nearly no investment and giving extremely good rewards. This make the game a joke. Putting without a good spread for work and reward, the game dies.
bah i’ve been working for my dual incinerators, and was happy for the price to go down the other day, but now when i look instead of spark being 300+ gold for only 4ish of them its now 200+ gold for 40ish of them, that doesn’t really help, what i feel like happened to some is when people sold them for dirt cheap, people bought them and just are going to either A. wait for it to go up B. turn it around and sell it for a bit of a profit. either one of those will raise the prices. I like the idea of an event/quest to get it, but i also don’t like that because it is what keeps most people from having them imo. Im almost done with mine i just need some lodestones, runestones, and precursor, if it was only a quest then i feel like it would be rather easy to get in the end.
I like the idea of having to go on a long journey/quest to get the weapons. I would love to see the people of the server as a community help in the time of need to get one legendary for one person. It would strengthen people as a community and it would build a sense of trust among the people of the server. Being able to buy them on the TP is…kind of disheartening. they are legendary, they should feel as such. They should be soul bound too, to that character, and not be able to be sold on the trading post, that way they would actually be legendary. sure, it would be hard to get them, and it would be eventful to have them and not everyone is going to want to do all that hard work questing and traveling to get them but, that’s the point. Not everyone would have them and only a select few would, making them something rare and exciting to see on someone. They would make legendaries and even precursors, if they wanted to do that, feel like an accomplishment and feel earned, giving people that have them like they did something very few peolpe would ever do or have done, not farmed for materialsand spent money and time.
What about the people that looted the chest with multiple characters and got 3+ precursors? Yes, this actually did happen.

Tell that to the players who buddied for the weekend to kill karka and asked their friend what is a dawn?
i am surprised the new cove did not have a treasure map-like hunt for something. i got all of the WPs and interest points after 1.5 hours of running/ressing/running, and was kind of lost after, so i went back to lion’s arch.
though the bikini-clad NPCs in the lower right corner of the map were a neat site at the beach, unphased by the hostile Skelk there.

Even if precursors were free, you’d still be paying that much for the rest of the gifts. I’m just saying that precursors should be equally as hard to get as the other 3 components, not less, not more. And very long, fairly challenging quest would be an okay way to do that. Effortless legendary component is not so legendary.
A questline for both the precursor and the legendary is the only thing that would rightfully make legendaries legendary.
What is legendary about the way they are obtained now. Its all RNG at first then a grind for this and that.
Atleast a legendary quest would be fun and people could do it when they have time and feel like taking a few steps of progression towards it.
A questline for a legendary would be something along the lines of.
Go find the npc that has x in his possession, deafeat him/pass his trial to obtain it. After that go on a long journey across the world and into the depths of tyria and do this and that as a rite. Once you’ve done all steps the weapon turns into its legendary form. Give players some choises for some of the weapons, different paths which inturn gives you a different legendary in the end depending on the characters choises. Doesnt have to apply to all the weapons, but some atleast. Maybe the character takes a more evil path and gets a different look. Consequences of character actions should be stated next to the choise, so you can pick what you like for looks or pick the character choise your toon would do.
Heck it could be a quest just as far reaching as 1-80 was, take a few weeks to complete.
People should also be able to do more than one weapons quest. So those that want to can collect a whole collection or just 3-4 for their weapon setups.
Now that would be fun endgame.
Does no one read anymore?
Anet already announced they are working on a “scavenger hunt” for obtaining precursors.
I don’t feel like pulling up the page. But it is official and it is happening.
Aion had something similar with their entire unique PvE Armour+Weapon set.
It involved different types of quests, from hunting mobs for drops, to finding hidden “lights” during specific hours, to crafting a specific items, and even running from npc to npc in a specific amount of time. The entire set wasn’t easy to acquire and required quite a bit of patience, a LOT of frustration (should be avoided), and devotion, until about 2~3 years into the game.
Though the items you gained were weak for PvP compared to PvP gear (because they had a bonus stat that either increased PvP armour, or damage by a %), they served as a gateway to even better gear from dungeons, and PvP. They also had their very own unique skins.
However, keeping in mind that GW2 is a game that I do NOT wish to turn into a gear game, I would suggest keeping the stat differences VERY minimal.
