I was able to take some time off from work on Friday to be online for the start of the event. Taking time off from work has an opportunity cost, but I wanted to be there for the kickoff, so I made a choice…
The opening of the event was so laggy for me that I was basically unable to contribute anything other than my auto-attack. Like everyone else, I went stampeding off to participate in the scavenger hunts. Called it a day after a few hours of not being able to finish the third step of either scavenger hunt (explains my low scores for stability and network QoS).
Logged in while drinking my coffee on Saturday morning and was able to finish up the scavenger hunts – despite the Largos still being buggy. I tried the new dungeon with a pick-up group – we didn’t do well, but I wouldn’t hesitate to run with any of those guys (in the non-gender specific, all-inclusive sense) again. Ran some errands and was back on line in time for the opening of phase two. Again, the opening of the phase was fairly laggy and it was difficult to understand what was going on around me. This part was basically a lag tempest in a teacup.
Then, like everyone else, I joined the armada and sailed for Klendathu. My frame rate was OK once we hit the beach. I participated in the adventurer-wave attacks and patrols that secured several footholds on the island. After the attack stopped for the day, I joined a DE event to kill a champion shark. My entire reward consisted of a virtual gold medal, some exps, some karma, and a few coins. I saw nothing like a chest in the area afterwards (and believe me, I looked).
Leading up to phase three, I did some exploring. The drop rate for loot on Klandathu was – as noted elsewhere – abysmal. I chose to be online and in the battle area for phase three. We got a dispatch directing us to Canach’s Folly and left Camp Karka to begin a ~2 1/2 hour running battle. During phase three, I didn’t have any special graphics-related difficulties – while there were some momentary laggy bits, overall, about half of my deaths during phase three came while trying to raise other folks who were downed too close to the forward battle lines and there were cases where someone else died trying to raise me.
There were some epics moments where it seemed like a majority of our wave was downed and a handful of survivors were basically forced to retreat to some defensible landmark in order to regroup and make a stand before working back towards the killing fields and raising our dead as we clawed our way forward again. Sometimes I was one of the bodies strewn across the battlefield, waiting for the handful of survivors to come get me.
Over the course of the battle I was barrel-rolled, doused in acid, pounded by ranged attacks, and finally, rolled over by a wave of hatchlings on the ramp literally within sight of where the grand chest spawned. I sincerely appreciate that a couple of nice folks came back and raised me so I could loot the chest too.
I ended up spending about 50 silver over the weekend on repairs and waypoint travel. My loot haul from the final chest was worth a little over 2 gold (leaving me up ~ 1.5 gold for the weekend) beyond the 20 slot box (nice) and the spiffy event earring (also nice). I’m satisfied with the rewards – not giddy, but not complaining either. I added ~125 to my combat medic count – and there were many times that I tried, but there were already too many folks working to raise the downed person.
There were obviously things that A-Net could have been done better in terms of general QoS. But, even with the problems, I enjoyed the event and would do it again.

Positives:
- Phase 3 was the first time I’ve ever felt like I was playing a (cooperative) Massively Multiplayer game while playing an MMO (not including events that end betas).
- Loot reward saved me 10g getting a 20 slot bag and gave me a nice accessory to pass around my account – both themed for the event.
- Encouraged the community to work together.
- Good progression, getting people interested and luring them in – such as the dead whales on the beach before it even started ;-) .
Negatives:
- Lag and invisible mobs (though considering the scope, it met my expectations and was acceptable, granted I did not disconnect – sorry to all those who did :-( ).
- Exotic loot was dulled by the mass-spam of Precursors in map chat (3g worth of armor with easily obtained skins that I can’t even use vs 200+g extremely rare items that I could have used)
- Story didn’t feel urgent and connected to other events in the world currently.
Hope ANet learns the restrictions of their game, what the majority of players want and continues to make quality events like this.

I’ve said it before many times in many different threads, but I’ll say it succinctly here; this is honestly the worst thing to happen to any MMORPG I’ve ever played. It’s worse than the cuts post-launch Warhammer: Online saw, it’s infinately worse than Ahn’qiraj ever was (that was actually enjoyable), and it’ll likely be the reason this game goes the way of SW:TOR with the cash shop as it’s main way of generating income for the company.
Whomever came up with the idea for adding precursors to the chest needs to sit down and really contemplate what they’ve done.
EDIT: Actually, I stand corrected. Tabula Rasa, Final Fantasy IX and Conan have all been pretty spectacular failures as well; those, however, were doomed from the start.

It improved over the days. 1st day was just awful, complete stand still due to lag, couldnt get enough hits counting to be able to loot much. 2nd day wasn’t much better.
3rd day seemed to improve lag wise, but maybe that was partially down to it not being in lions arch so can’t really compare. Lots more to do event chain wise.
Wasn’t disconnected myself, but the number of people that did, including people I knew was huge so rating it based on that. Trading post dying straight after the event wasn’t useful either.
These things need more testing for numbers in terms of lag and disconnection, and consequences of thousands of trying to sell stuff after a large event should be looked at too.

Just a few comments:
1. I really like the new island, and the Karka design. Your design team did a top-notch job and it shows!
3. The second event, in particular, really felt like we were retaking the island (the lag, bugs aside). One of the better mob events I’ve been part of, without a doubt.
4. Loot was ok, at least on par with regular enemy drops, but drops had no relation to effort. I had better items from the Drakes and the Skales than after fighting a Karka Champion for 10 min. As well, the final event, 3, I spent 2 hours with 0 reward (I had to leave to make supper before the last part) as each stage of the final boss fight (20-30 min) did not count as a separate event. Drops were very poor, with a high kill rate and subsequently high repair bill.
5. I did not notice a pile of bugs, although the bugs in stage 1 halted me until the hotfix.
6. Lag was unbearable at times, although admittedly Friday and Saturday were the worst. I don’t know if this was due to frustrated players logging off, or a fix implemented but the ANet team Saturday.
7. I feel the final event, stage 3, was too long. A standard story mode dungeon is 1-2 hours. Had I known I needed to budget 3-4 hours for the event, I might have better been able to plan my day. As it is I feel a little cheated from the rewards at the end, despite dumping of my life 2 hours into the fight.

Phase 1&2 starts in LA = chaotic, big lag, dcs, enemies invisible at times. Questchain phase 1: fun once unbugged, reward good, and great when did with multiple alts.

Phase 3 , guild chats bugged saying “not member of a guild” . Happy to get in same overflow with my huspand and nice bunch of great people! Phase 3 eventchain…Massdeaths, lag and huge length made it hilarious in our overflow but maybe not the way intended
Biggest gripe : such many hour eventchains need different reward system, like tokens at end of each part, please! Many lost end chest to dc, me to dying on the swarmed ramp to end fight ,rez at WP, poof boss dead &no chest when back, aftr all that work -was not there only after a reward, but still . Also, maybe the final bossfight was too short compared to other parts , if it could be too short to get back to.

Sure, when phase 1 kicked off it was a bit laggy for the first 15 minutes, and some NPC’s were bugged. Who cares, you could do them later. All the rest was just perfect. And the final 2.5 hour event was just epic. NO lag at all during this entire time.

For these from my guild without DC/lag/bug problems it was on of greatest events so far, for these that haven’t got reward and had problems it was most disapointing. Kind of polarity of experiences.

I enjoyed Phase 2 and the end phase 3 the most. I love the concept of actually seeing the new map open (not just be there after an update) but the execution was flawed in many ways.

Based on this thread. is safe to assume that “overall satisfaction” of most GW2 player base is based only in “loot/reward”, “stability” and “network connection/speed”.
Consequently, the devs should focus their efforts on stable and rewardable events and forget about story, graphics and all the other details that makes an event fun (in my point of view)???

Not really pleased that people were able to loot more than one end chest. I still consider that an exploit (at least of the overflow servers).

Overall, I’m pretty pleased. I’m absolutely PISSED that I couldn’t finish Phase 1. I couldn’t get the stupid Quaggan saved due to her pathing/getting stuck on a cage. I played several hours all 3 days and it wasn’t fixed before it was removed on Henge of Denravi. I know the reward was basically nothing, but I’m a completionist by nature and a hoarder, so I’ll probably have these Phase 1 items in my bank for a year or two hoping they’ll bring back that part so I can finish it.

I think the final event would have been far less frustrating, time and death-wise, if other DE’s were not constantly intersecting. At one point, not only did we have our own Final event, but 2 other event spawns, plus random Champions poking their slime spouts and egg layers into the mix.
