Free Ascended back piece a la Mad Memories?
It’s a definite possibility, as Linsey did mention “complimentary” Ascended items in her blog post about them. Then again, she did also mention Legendaries in the same sentence, and I HIGHLY doubt ANet would be giving out free Legendaries. There are also people who are claiming she meant to say “complementary” instead of “complimentary”, but that wouldn’t make sense given the context of the rest of the sentence.
In short, it’s a maybe, but don’t get your hopes up too high.
“As we introduce the new high-level content, we’ll also roll out complimentary Ascended and Legendary items (to say nothing of the other rewards you can earn by playing the content).”

I am assuming this means we will get SOMETHING free over the weekend
I think she meant complementary, as in they are rolling out/introducing new Ascended and Legendary items that complement/go along with this new content. She also uses the word “earn” to describe the rest of the (non Ascended/Legendary) gear of lower tiers, so it follows that you are also supposed to “earn” the Ascended/Legendary pieces. Also note that she talks about both “Ascended and Legendary” as one package – they are not giving out free Legendaries, which is what that phrase implies.
Honestly it makes complete sense to me in the context that she meant to say complementary. Certainly more sense than complimentary.
/spelling and grammar lesson over lol
Edit: Also, wasn’t the Mad King back piece only Masterwork and not Exotic?

There’s a rare piece, once you got the complete set of Memoires.

I only remember a blue (Fine) and a green (Masterwork) back piece from the Mad King event.

Those are the only two back pieces. There was no rare or exotic one.

So I have no idea what people are mention an exotic or rare back piece when there wasn’t one. Unless they happened to see the rare one that someone transmuted linked in chat (they used the guild back piece)

My bad, it is the Fine and Masterwork. I must have confused the quality with the orange fire of the masterwork equipment.
I thought the word “complimentary” was used as in “in complement to the new dungeons/content”. To complement them. To go with them. Not “here’s your complementary gift bag” kind.

This.
Poor choice of words perhaps, as it can easily be taken as “free.”
I wonder if the ring shown may be a possibility as a “gifted” item for those attending the events?
I though we might probably get one free piece. It might not be as good as what drops. But something people could use pretty quickly in the dungeon if needed. Theres even a chance the events might have the presence of Agony in a low-grade form. But its hard to say. Just speculation on that.
The “exotic” bit from Halloween was the shoes you got from completing the jumping puzzle. At least at this point the jumping puzzles they are putting in don’t go away after the event ends, if they would reward such a thing. But I don’t think we’d be getting it from that, something more event related. Probably after we gain access to the map and learn about the Karka. If at all.

No not poor choice of words, flat out incorrect choice of words. Complimentary, with an “i”, and complementary, with an “e”, are two entirely different words. People thinking it means free are correct because that is exactly what Linsey typed, although I don’t think she meant to.
It might be free. You might get it the first time you complete the dungeon.
