Isn't this patch just.. really wrong?
More unique content such as a new zone perhaps? we got that. New jumping puzzles? yep that to. The one time event was the introduction to the new zone which will still be available after the event. They were going to release the zone anyway so why not make it epic. The devs have stated that additional events are not that time consuming to make with the tools they have, the time consuming part is the art assets. They already had the island and the new monsters, the only foes unique to the event itself were scaled up versions of those monsters with different fight mechanics.
I did not attend any of the one time events, so when I first visited the island my thoughts were:
- These spiders aren’t even a threat. It isn’t like they attacked Lion’s Arch or anything.
- Why is the Lionguard at this island? They must be helping these other guys build their vacation resort. How nice of them.
- What the heck is that empty room with the roasted spider and lava for? Oh well. Doesn’t look too important. I’ve seen plenty of spiders on this island.
I didn’t figure everything out until I visited that one Lost Shores recap webpage. It is a bad idea to have deep ties between introductions to new zones and one time events. The introduction to a zone should be either personal story instances or implied through dynamic events and NPCs out in the world. That way if a new player in the future enters the zone they will know what the heck is going on. I can see this zone becoming a problem to new players down the line. Eventually that Lost Shores webpage will get buried in the internet.
I think this is just fine. More dungeons are good. Mind you this dungeon is unique as it does not act the same as other dungeons before it. We also got a new zone, new ranger pet, new jumping puzzle, new pvp map and more. So the content in itself is good. Very much what I’d expect from something like this.
Maybe the one time event thing could have been handled better… too many bugs that kinda ruined it and ending in what was for many a tiresome lagfest that lasted too long and which turned pointless when loads of people were not able to get to the very end or got there but not got reward due to server issues or whatever.
So for me… the content was fine, I like it, and I will be visiting Southsun cove and do Fractals dungeon more after this. One time event, if done in the future needs to be done differently.
I would like to see 10 man dungeons at some point. I know that people on here are all “if I want to raid I’d play a different mmo!” but I don’t really think 10 players is too much like 20 players are. And as long as the rewards are balanced (i.e. no new gear tier) I don’t really see the problem. With 10 player dungeons you can experiment with different stuff, like for instance maybe having a dungeon where the team has to split in half (kind of like the dredge fractal dungeon).
New patch IS really wrong, but from a practical point of view. The most important thing about that area remains the one-time event, and it has passed.
At this moment, what do we have there? There’s the exploration part, which is always fun. Then there are the two jumping puzzles. We have the new mobs, a bit OP in some people’s opinion, plus the drakes and the riders which we can find in other areas of the world map too.
And then? Nothing. That’s all there is: two jumping puzzles and a new type of monster. Yes, there are the few dynamic events, but it’s nothing major, or anything to make you want to keep coming back to it! Crafting enthusiasts might also swing by a few times to gather the new resource types.
How it should have been? The new dungeon should have been placed here. And so, two things would have been accomplished:
- keep the new area populated, cause the fractals is the new hip thing now and everyone’s doing it
- stop LA chat from now being flooded with “lfg fractals” and “lfXm fractals”, which totally ruined it. Personally, it makes me avoid the city completely now. b
btw, is there ANY prospect of a dedicated /lfg channel anywhere in our future?
