Waiting For Death [WFD]
@ Borlis Pass Server
See, this is where, depending on your view point, I either lose out or am just too principled for my own good. It would never even occur to me to do this kind of thing.
Some people doesn’t play the game for fun, they just want better stuff…
Horrible..
More damage done with the horrid loot table.
I only did the event once as I thought that’s what it was, ONE-TIME only..NOPE.
People who abused it should get hit by the banhammer.
Also stuff like this makes me loose faith in anet. How can they forget about adding measures against this obvious abuse?
IF, and only if, you managed to log into an overflow that was just ending the event instead of automatically being sent to a less populated server, that is. Odds on that? Nil.
The best you could hope for would be to be in a party with someone in the right instance (overflow), click on the “join in” option after the chest had spawned and catching that moment when some people are leaving after getting the loot but the chest is still up. I managed to get one alt into an overflow like that, but it was at the very beginning of the event instead so I got to do the entire chain again. It was a blast. Different experience on my guardian alt than on my mesmer I have to admit.
But no… what you propose wouldn’t have worked simply because you likely wouldn’t get into the right overflow when you logged in.
The problem here seems simple enough: why can the chest be used by a character that didn’t participate in the event?
That doesn’t just go for this event, but all events. How many times have I jogged through Gort’s cave in Kessex Hills and spotted the post-event chest just sitting there? If I attempt to use it and didn’t participate in the event to clear the cave, it should pop up a message explaining that I don’t meet the requirements for that reward. Simple as that.
People were hunting for overflow servers still in progress for hours after the first server finished (some were bugged and finished hours later). All you needed was a group invite to get into the overflow.
And we know it wasn’t just because they D/Cd on their first go-around.
Is it that hard to make a chest only openable once per account?

They were obviously intended to be once per character. You have the shell piece, which is account bound and unique (meaning only one on your character at a time). They obviously had covered the possibility of someone getting two on one character on one account.
Yeah this doesn’t work because if you go into the wrong over flow it doesn’t work, also if you don’t participate in the event you don’t get credit either.
The only thing you could do this with is rich ore veins or something but that’s both boring and wouldn’t yield enough reward to offset anything.
cant u guys read ? ANET is hiring people, probably they dont have NOT EVEN 1 GUY to test those things… so they are hiring people, so the next time they can TEST and event before they go LIVE ….
@Volcon
Maybe I wasn’t clear in my original post. It did happen. I watched it happen. And if you had friends helping out it was quite easy to do.
Also, this wasn’t an exploit. Nowhere does it say you couldn’t do this. Don’t get mad at them (or me), get mad at ANet for allowing it.

No you didn’t. You wouldn’t have logged in to the full overflow. You would have, like I was, been sent to an overflow that had likely completed the event already, thus no chest or loot. As a matter of fact, the only way you could have been in position with your alts would be to have logged them out in an instance that already had completed the event.
The best you could have hoped for would be to be in the zone partied with someone in the instance and used the “join” option after the chest had appeared and people were moving out of the zone after collecting their loot. Even then it was a small window in time to get lucky in.

Probably about the same number of times that I have tried to inform another character who is running off after completed it, that a chest has just spawned for their reward.
And about the same number of times I have later found out that an event I have completed has a chest I didn’t see as part of the reward.
Chests are a bad game mechanism and should be gotten rid of.

That’s exactly what he did. And it was easier to do than you think:
A friend ran 4 alts to the spot where the chest appears at the end of the event and parked them there. He then joined an overflow server where the event was happening by grouping up with someone already on the server. He then ran the event and finished with killing the boss and looting the chest. He then logged off that character, logged on his alts one at a time, joined the same overflow server that the event was just finished on, and looted the chest with all his alts.
You DID NOT need to participate in the event to look the chest. That is an assumption everyone is making. Did you try it? If you did, you’d see you could loot it.
Getting loot on all your alts was extremely easy to do. Some people thought of it and did it. Yes, for real, it happened.
This is so kittening unfair… All who did this should get banned and get all the items they looted deleted… This is exploiting. Very clever of you to post this on the official forum

This is what inevitably happens if you give out unique and rare rewards in one spot. While people struggled with annoying RNG for three months, Lost Shores gave the best drops in the game’s history to date.
ArenaNet had claimed in the past human behaviour like that is why they would never give any single event preferential treatment, and that all events would offer equal rewards to solve the issue of one event being favoured over another.
so will people get banned for this? it’s like when u ask your dad to take 5$ and then u take 25$ instead of 5$ which would get u grounded.
i hope they get banned for 2-weeks and get only 2 rares and 2 exotics
Troll Post Nice try:
How can you park all your alts where the chest is. The chest disappears in a certain amount of time, and 90% of the time your alts are no where near the event, so that will take time to just get your alts there, especially wadding through vets on the way, and on top of that, most likely you will get in a different overflow. Sooo I call bull Dinkles on the post.
People took advantage of how an event was designed, and those that didn’t are upset and want revenge (oops, I mean justice)? Even the OP admitted, in a way, that they would’ve done the same —“Wish I had thought of that” -- and I would have as well if I had alternate 80s. ;P
I could actually relate this to the “justice” served by an “angry mob”.

I’m curious to know if all these greedy people logging in/out to alts helped contribute to mess up the servers which resulted in so many people getting disconnected and missing the chest altogether?
Anyone could figure this out in one sec , it is a really simple thing to see.
The problem is that , not like people make it sounds , this was no easy feat , since finding an event going near the end where you could simple do that so easily was not fast or guaranteed at all.

You do realize , that if you have a friend in the overflow the chest is in, you can port directly to said overflow and not even have to reform the group right?
First of all this is not nearly as easy as it seems. You get placed in the emptiest overflow when you log out and log back in, those are the ones that already had the event completed, so no you couldn’t “park” your alts anywhere.
Secondly the loot did NOT scale to your level. Unless your alts were also level 80 then you did not receive any additional exotic items. Low level alts received low level items (I know because I tried, and before you accuse me of exploiting, I logged in an alt and did an hour of the event chain again with some guildies)
So to do this you had to know how to get into the correct overflow AND have a level 80 alt. This is a much smaller problem then the people who DC’d.
Have any of you complaining about this actually done a world event before that spawns a chest? If you do not get credit for event ie get bronze or above you will not be able to loot chest. I DCed on start of last step of the event and then when logged in was placed in a overflow server that had just completed the event. Was unable to loot the chest that was there because I did not get a precipitation of the event.

Actually, this is a classic example of a WAD/C type exploit. It needs to be addressed in the future, and the most that should be done is the extra items removed, I’d say. But this is an exploit. If it was meant to be account wide they mail it to each character.
Yeah I’m calling BS on the OP also. In order to successfully do the event with an alt, you had to join a party that was apart of it. Then you had to go back and forth to LA in hopes that you would get on the same server as the group, with the event taking place. Finally, you had to actually run to the area with the chest, which is no small feet.

Did you get event credit from your original instance? These people apparently did.

The hardest part would be the run. And apparently the end area was open prior to the event.

Ok you are missing a KEY feature of this game who would have made you do it in a lot less time…
You can directly request to join any party member server…
Granted if the server was full you had to keep trying , but for sure faster than going to LA and back.
Might not help that rightclick → Join was bugged at release.

Anet left a loophole here. And not everyone is abusing the loophole knowingly.
I do agree that parking alt are quite a bit of an overkill(won’t accuse it of exploit unless official), but I have two lvl80s and I did the painfully long quest twice, start to end, for a total of around 5-6 hours.
And on the second time I was kind enough to bring people into the overflow, people who got dc’ed or bugged out in the first place, and constantly guide them all the way to the end, which made everyone’s day a lot faster. Where should I be?
I agree, people abusing this should be banned

For some people getting better stuff IS the fun of playing a game like this.
Either way, I know lots of people who had every alt they could get parked beside the chest, no precursors for them unfortunately.
I am highly skeptical of these reports. There is no way you could just park your toon at the chest, and then instantly jump into an overflow (as if the worlds running these weren’t always full; thus requiring multiple attempts to join) where the event just ended to get the chest….all without actually participating….and by doing it within the time frame before the chest disappears.
Is there a very, very small minority of people who may have possibly been able to perhaps successfully achieve this? Sure. I’m sure a couple of people may have gotten lucky. And by a couple, that’s about as many as I think could have pulled this off.
Yeah this doesn’t work because if you go into the wrong over flow it doesn’t work, also if you don’t participate in the event you don’t get credit either.

Wrong all you had to do is participate in the final fight, in the cave, and bingo!, you get credit.
It was possible, few of my friends looted them with 5 different chars.
Sweetest event ever I’d say, for who got some exploit skills

It worked. saw it myself. All you needed was someone still in your group to right click and join overflow. Since the event was done and people were looting the chest and leaving, the zones stopped being full.

I don’t really care. People will exploit, or destroy the economy for something all the time. I consider it a part of the economy. Causes drops in prices. Like when dye was pouring out of every monster.
i only hope they crack down on this exploit like they did on release for those who used the vendor exploit and make them delete the items and gold and suspend them for a few weeks
People did in fact loot the chest on all of their alts, some scoring 3 or more precursors. To me it’s very similar to the vendor exploit, though I don’t think a ban is appropriate (didn’t then, don’t now).
I thought about it, but it does really account to an exploit and I didn’t want to risk a ban. However saying that now, if I had known before hand that the chests had a chance for pre-cursors I would have taken that risk, because its obviously ~ anet are not banning anyone.
i did it on 6 lvl 80s and 4 lvl 1 alts ( extra character slots ) for total of 10 of those 20 slot bags. Got 3 precursors ( rodgort, lover, chosen ) the lvl 1 alts chests scaled to my level so you only received lvl 62 exotics which really didnt do much because of no ectos ( has to be greater than lvl 70 to salvage ecto) and usually crappy runes. mainly did it for the bags which were account bound so now i have all 7 slots filled with 20 slot bags. gg people
I wanted to reply my post here but instead ended up creating a whole new thread myself.
This is my reply to those ill-mannered peeps wanting to ban the community, or believe illogically that there was any kind of exploitation involved:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/lostshores/Directed-complainers-READ/first#
My opinion is one time event = one character per account and i’m sticking to it.
Parking characters at the chest just to open for loot without any real input from those characters in the event = wrong.
Also I think that if precursors were part of the loot, it should have been limited to one and not multiples like some people received and also trial accounts should not received them at all (my opinion).

It took everything I had just to manage to last through the event ONCE, with the waypoint loading screen freezes, and the disconnects. 5 minutes after I finally managed to get the chest, Anet nuked the servers.
Plus it wasn’t ‘just’ a matter of quickly changing characters, there was some significant backdoor ways to get back on to overflow servers that had the event running, ofter required having a friend or something invite you to a group so you could join them.
Basically, hate to say it ~ but someone back in Diablo III said it correctly I guess, exploit and exploit as often as possible if you want to get anywhere.
See, this is where, depending on your view point, I either lose out or am just too principled for my own good.
This is how I feel about many areas of the game. I made a post about the good players getting punished to stop the cheaters, but it got infracted of course for no reason at all.
What makes me wonder is “How did people even know to park their alts there?” Somehow leaks keep coming out about stuff like this that a sliver of the population get to profit hugely from, often at the expense of the rest. Like people will find out a new item is crafted with certain Lodestones before it is added to the game. They buy up tons, sell them for double. We should all be getting this info at the same time, and the first ones to discover opportunities for money making should be rewarded, not people who got leaked info.
It’s possible. If you have a friend who is in that particular overflow and you’re partied with him, you could use the “join in overflow” function. Why it lets you loot, I don’t know. Oversight?

Probably hubris, they thought the event would go smoothly on all servers…
