Southsun Cove is all risk, no reward
Well, even if it were a normal area, the drops are sub-par.

Yeah. I’m not usually too fussed about loot, but as much as I’m enjoying exploring the new zone, I’m not even breaking even on my repair bills.
ANet, if you’re reading, could you please have a look at the loot tables when you get a chance? I really don’t want to lose money by choosing this zone to play in, and that’s what’s happening so far.
ETA: I’m level 80 in full exotics and I don’t have this problem in Orr or Frostgorge, so I don’t think it’s just that I’m not able to handle the content.

I’ve played 700 hours and never had an exotic drop (nor a black lion key) and only rares on the odd occasion. Loot is terrible no matter what.
The place is challenging. Loot stinks. The way the whole event has went it doesn’t surprise me.
Going to make a guess you are exaggerating a bit on 700 hours :p
That said, yea the loot seemed pretty … non-exciting. Also a bit weird passion fruit can’t be stored in the crafting materials.

I’m not, the only real way I’ve even gotten good rares is crafting everything I have. :/
Seconding Zen here; I’ve only ever seen rares/exotics when I craft them. Never seen one drop ever.

Really? I usually get at least a couple a day on my main running nearly +100% MF (and I have a lot of Alts I also play).

I agree the new zone doesn’t really have farming areas worth the risk. Considering Karka are so difficult, I believe they should be harder.
Maybe there will a cool farm discovered?
What struck me is the lack of items you can get off karma vendors. Would have loved to see some unique armor skins for the map that you can get via exotic armor sold by some karma vendors.
If I thought that rares and exotics were avluable loot, I’d have to agree that the loot is pretty bad. But crafting material drops in great abundance here—I’ve almsot gotten enough blood for another set of berserker’s armor after 3 hours of killing.

And for the people not making use of the crafting mats that are dropping and who don’t plan to, you can break even on your repair bills (or profit if you aren’t dying) by selling the mats on the Black Lion.
There’s also an abundance of easily gathered metals (including Orichalcum spawns) on the map, which is nice.

Haven’t seen exotics drop yet for me in the game (I am level 69 on my most complete character), but I have had some rares drop, including a rare level 60ish torch today at Southsun Cove, which was the best drop I had there. Everything else was white or blue, mostly low level stuff, if there was anything at all. I had quite a few keys drop for me in the early levels of the game, but they are quite rare now.

Seems like a missed chance to create a Karka-shell heavy armor set, a Karka-shell shield, and maybe a couple weapons made out of coral or something. Or, hell, those same items, but as craft-only skins that require the new “crafting materials” that you can gather in Southsun Cove.
But I can’t say I’m really all that surprised. Anet seems determined to avoid creating new and unique armor/weapon skins. You’d think that, with the focus on aesthetic horizontal progression, they would put a lot of effort in expanding players’ aesthetic choices in-game. But nope, we get a handful of limited-time skins during a holiday event, and a bunch of “new” gear that uses skins that can already be found for cheaper in other areas of the game.
I dunno I have been soloing the veteran Karka and I seem to get a blue or green every other fight. Not sure in what world that is considered bad. If anything seems to be a lot better then when I farmed Cursed Shore with my 120% magic find. That and lots of delicious bloods too from Karka.
Sounds like to me you are just having a stroke of bad luck.

This post exactly describes why ArenaNet should analyze Magic Find and rethink drop rates.
I’ve maybe seen an exotic or two… But I’m pretty sure they were from chests (which are unaffected by MF anyway).
The game shouldn’t encourage people to ignore stats and other beneficial rune mechanics in order to obtain the best loot.
Instead they give us a brand new zone where everything seems to use confusion and items are no better than any other zone. (I think that’s the main “difficulty” of the zone… Getting hit with confusion.)
I just lag up and instantly die to WTF? damage from the lv 84 mobs. I’m lv 80 ele with rare lv 80 armor and master lv 80 accessories.
I look at the combat tab and it says 2600 5000 1600 in damage numbers… I have only close to 13k hp on my ele. She is built into power, precision, and toughness…

Not to be a smart kitten but I play GW2 on a toaster, more or less. I always have lag and I always have a frame rate below 20. I am capable of playing through Southsun Cove (including population lag) fine. My frame rate there is probably 1-3 fps. Suck it up. I’m tired of the lag complaints, it really is not as bad as people are making it out to be.
That aside: which weapons are you using? Staff and focus both have projectile reflects in earth attunement. The young karkas have a spit attack thing that they open combat with, and it hits like a truck. That’s the damage that you’re seeing. If you can interrupt, block or reflect that damage, the rest of the fight goes by very easily.
Just be sure to avoid fighting more than one at once (and try to retreat if you do). I started a topic in this forum where others have posted more tips/advice for handling them — hopefully you’ll have an easier time once you can figure out a way to avoid the spit projectiles.
This post probably comes across as sarcastic/sassy/elitist — it’s not my intent and I’m sorry if it does.

No you don’t get it.
I can’t even load any models for more than 5 minutes after arriving then for another few seconds when I start moving to a new spot. I’m running a laptop with a crappy 1.68 ghz dual core apu. My ram and Graphics are fine though. I see invisible objects and mobs everywhere. I’m practically fighting blind if its not for the name labels. The lag comes after when I run into 30+ people and 10 or more foes in a small area. It used to occur in wvw, now its everywhere, yet I don’t die in low level maps obviously.
As for play style I’m usually dual dagger, but I will use a staff on mobs you can’t even get close to. I’m not that stupid yet that first time there I was unprepared anyways and tried to jump into a stack of lv 84s with daggers. I felt very stupid. My lag and unable to render anything didn’t help either.
