Of course that should work. For that matter, you can just get the Lionguard karma weapons and do the same thing, bypassing commendations entirely.
Yes, I got the cheapest daggers for commendations and transmuted them onto my level 80’s. Then I got the pistols for karma and did likewise. Any further commendations go to my alts with less karma to burn.

Found the cheapest. Get 3 field guides (lvl 80 rares) ~20s/each. Forge them for 300 commendations. Cheapest I know thus far.

use the field guides and you will get loads of commendations…my bank is full of 250 stacks now..:)

Field Guides are pretty cheap. Exotic Trinkets also end up being pretty cheap, also.
Throw three level 78-80 exotic rings/amulets into the forge and you’ll get 2000 commendations.
Candy Corn Orichalcum Amulets seem to be the top way of doing it right now, since it’s a good way to get rid of candy corn (needs 150 per amulet) and it only requires 3 Exquisite Opals rather than the normal 5 (since the candy corn takes the place of the other opals).
