Kite enemy into AoE mechanics
It’s fun and fine when used in moderation. When every single boss uses it in some way, it begins to get repetitive and stale.
I don’t mind this mechanic, despite the implied stupidity of the boss running into his own cow-pie. After all, the bosses can’t be THAT smart, considering that they generally don’t even try to avoid player attacks, are often dumbfounded by even the smallest variation in the terrain in their own lairs, and use repetitive attack rotations even after seeing that they obviously don’t work against the ankle-biters (us) trying to kill them.
In all seriousness, I look at it from the perspective that it’s more interesting than 1-hit-KO mechanics that were the norm for a long time.
And yet players still can’t figure out how to do these fights.
There’s no reason to learn how to kite in open-world PvE.
There’s no reason to learn how to kite in open-world PvE.
There’s no reason not to have this fight figured out by the second time. If you fight this warden, and it targets you frequently, then it’s your job to figure out what to do with it. Don’t be “that guy”.
Seems like there’s an awful lot of this type of mechanic.
Aetherblade Dungeon – Drag Mai into the cannonballs to lower her shield
Aetherpath TA – The whole path was pretty much built around it. Drag oozes to oil to clean it, drag holograms to machines to destroy them, drag holograms to the Clockheart to interrupt its shield
Canach battle – Drag him into mines to damage him
Queen’s Jubilee – At least one of the arena bosses required dragging into AoE’s to become vulnerable, possibly more than that (I think maybe Liandri did as well, but I never bothered with that one because I knew I wouldn’t enjoy it)
Post-Jubilee Scarlet instance – Lure her to the exploding barrels
Halloween 2013 – Drag the Bloody Prince into candy pools to make him vulnerable
Origins of Madness – Drag the 2nd warden into mines to make him vulnerableHaven’t done any of the normal dungeons or fractals, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it showed up there too given how common it seems to be in updates.
Wondering what other people think of this type of mechanic. Personally I find it annoying and from a game-world perspective rather silly (hurr, I’m an intelligent NPC so I’m going to follow you right into the only thing that makes me vulnerable… repeatedly). I’d like to see them cut back on using it in the future.
You didn’t drag the bloody prince into the candy pool. You ran into the (very poorly placed) candy pool and turn yourself into a sticky mess. The mechanic was reused in the fight against the viscount.
Some of the dungeon/fractal bosses have something similar but not exactly.
AC p2 you need to get the boss into the trap to let you attack it.
Dredge fractal bosses requires dragging it to a spot to pour stuff on it(which is an AoE activated by a player).
I don’t really mind the mechanic itself but when combined with things like Mai Trinn’s teleport it gets annoying very quickly.

I’m not saying it’s justified. I definitely think players should be able to learn the fight easily enough.
I’m just mentioning the fact that open-world PvE does very little to prepare players for encounters like this.
It requires some skill which is foreign to the majority of the PvE player base.
The right decision is probably to leave it in highend PvE content rather than introduce it in living world content where open world content doesn’t really require or use this in practice.

I think even this is a poor excuse, akin to someone saying “It’s just a game” as if that justifies being terrible in a group setting
