Since this last patch (which is great, except the fact that the wurm is extraordinary difficult) I’ve seen too much hate on Tyria. Every day I’ve been for like 10 hrs at Wurm and/or Marionette event and every single time people are calling each other a lot of insults, every time someone is calling the rest of the players noobs and etc.

I inderstand what ANet is trying to do, to collaborate with eachother, to learn to self coordonate and all that good stuff, which sounds great in theory, but it turnned out that people at a point are losing patience and hate is comming out.

I think it’s a bit exagerated to auto-organize a whole map (aprox. 150 players) when the most handy way to communicate is the map chat, then TeamSpeak and others, and let’s be honest, never can be brought in the same place to communicate the whole map!

To sum up, I feel very unconfortable at these events now with all this hate around me, every single time seeing people calling each other ’tards/noobs and many other things that I can not write them here!

Don’t missunderstand me, those events are great and very well thought, but they come with bad things like this attached, and Guild Wars community has rare cases like these comparing with other games, and I love this fact!

My way of dealing with flames is to flame back. Spout some bullkitten back at them, even if you are really the wrong one or really don’t know what you are actually doing. Say “I’m proud to be noob”, or “I have a life, unlike you loser”, or “this game sucks anyway”, or some other stuff that would turn the flame up. Don’t be civilized my friend, what they are doing is just making you battle hardened in mind and in soul. They are training you by throwing kitten at you, so that you could throw kittentier kitten back harder.

I think the amount of hate and frustration the events are causing show that they are not in fact great at all. They might be up your alley, but that’s another story.

A simple solution is to block the offending party.

The OP is right, where you see less of this type of trash talking unless you venture into WvW and sPvP.. It’s a great aspect of the game, for sure.

To sum up, I feel very uncomfortable at these events now with all this hate around me, every single time seeing people calling each other ’tards/noobs and many other things that I can not write them here!

I got into a scrap with a guy today too (over pm ofc). I’ve never seen someone so hell-bent on insulting people. We were in an overflow and he was throwing insults at everyone, even by name! I even saw one person log off mid-boss battle because she rolled into the Marionette’s path while avoiding a boss attack. Things like that happened and keep happening. People need to realize it’s just a game, and what they’re doing is actually cyber-bullying.

I’m from Canada and here, cyber-bullying is actually considered a criminal offence. Because of how it effects people, no wonder it is. You have people of all ages, some who are effected by comments more/differently than others, playing this game. It would be nice to have a few game monitors (Player moderators / GMs) actually around during the events to crack down on some of these things.

Thank you for making a post about this!

By doing this, you’re throwing more logs on the flame and making the situation worse and uncomfortable for other people. Block or ignore them.

I don’t want to be perceived as adding to this “hate” you describe, but if you’re spending 10 hours a day playing a video game and putting so much worth into what people type in to the chat box of a fantasy game that you’re genuinely upset by it, maybe you need to take a break.

Don’t be so concerned with what trolls type in a chat window. The reason they do it is because it upsets people like you and they get off on that. “Don’t feed the troll” is as true here as any other online place.

Ignore or block them, as others have already said. If you’re so attached to the game that you can’t do that, you need to exit and go for out for lunch with a friend or three. Guild Wars is just a game, is only fantasy and doesn’t even exist beyond bits and bytes hopping around inside a computer. Don’t let trolls into your head.

Was playing the other day and thought map chat was suspiciously free from malice. Until I realized that I had turned it off from the previous evening. It was only at that point did it occur to me how bad map chat has become. If I blocked every person who came on map chat and as an opener started with ‘expletive expletive expletive’ how did this or that happen, and the obligatory, on a failed event, noob this that or other (with plenty of expletives —-of course) it would be full.

If I see someone going overboard I just report them. Luckily though, I haven’t seen that much malice when I do the Marionette event, but the ones I do see I just straight up report them and see if ANet can deal with them.

An interesting conversation happened last night. It boiled down to the individuals being the most verbally aggressive seem to believe they are acting as a motivating force to force people to improve. While the contrary of encouragement is trying to convince people to actually improve. On the whole I’d estimate the second approach is more effective, but at least the first group might, on the whole, be doing it without malice?
Just relating a conversation. Anecdotal of course.

The problem for most of us who play, well, for FUN, is that the wurm/marionette are both bafflingly chaotic – I tried looking up what to do but there was so much reading up long complicated techniques and learning them off by heart it wasn’t remotely fun. You couldn’t just turn up and have a go, and mapchat was always full of people moaning about idiots who don’t know what they’re doing spoiling it for everybody else Well, ok, I let them keep it all for themselves and didn’t bother with it, and so did a lot of other players.

By creating content where people can’t just muck in, but have to have pre-learned, from the internet, their exact role in a long and complicated technique, Anet might as well have designed this content specially to create friction The fact is, people who take it very seriously think all those just having a go for the enjoyment of it are idiots, and people who are just having a go think those taking it very seriously and getting cross about it are idiots. So the casuals leave it and don’t get the achieves and the serious bunch end up with too few players to do it. They’ve already had this issue with Teq, so why repeat the problem with this LS? I think if you keep the content challenging but essentially fun and not too technique-oriented, people don’t end up getting so irate. Once you start having very exact techniques to do things where it only works if everyone knows exactly what they’re doing then you create a mapchat full of haters. I would have thought that should have been obvious to Anet quite honestly. I blame them for their idiocy more than the haters.

It’s also possible they have malicious intent with their verbal aggressiveness and simply claiming it’s to motivate others to improve.

It’s not everyone. With so many people at these events there are bound to be some jerks unfortunately. Ignore them and move on. Try to counter their negativity with a positive attitude, even when the event fails.

TTS has encountered a lot if this type of attitude at Teq, mari and Wurm. It kinda comes with the fact that you need roughly 150 to work together to win. There is bound to be a couple people who have no patience and instaid of trying to help new people or trying to work with or even around clueless people if need be they rage.
We try to pull them aside and explain how it only makes things worse and how if they want this to work they need to treat these people nice so they learn and participate rather then go screw this half way through and leave possibly leaving things open to failure. But in the end if they won’t stop the only thing you can so is report them. That is what the verbal abuse reporting category is for.

The WORST thing you can do is “flame back” that only causes more issues, more chaos, more hurt feelings and more trolling.

Being nice only goes so far, however.

When a person is completely incompetent, unwilling to learn, and is directly influencing a group to fail an event, tempers are going to fly, and I don’t blame people for getting upset.

When players have no way to have quality control over who they’re playing with, and are forced to play with people that don’t give a kitten about anyone else other than themselves so long as they are having fun at the expense of everyone else, other people stop having fun, and this quickly snowballs out of control until everyone is essentially miserable, and just wants to quit.

This is simply a problem with open world content, and the only way it’s going to get fixed is if Anet allows us to make our own groups, go into our own private instances for fights like these, and be able to directly interact with the players we take with us.

No matter how nice and polite you are, people who don’t want to learn how to be better at the game are never going to change, and that’s simply going to lead to more upset people.

The mentality of “I can play this game however I want so nyah” is far worst for the community than those that are getting upset at said people. The enjoyment of one person is not more important than the enjoyment of a hundred, plain and simple. If I had the ability to remove player such as those from an Over Flow, I would in a heart beat, because at the end of the day their inability to learn and play the game in a skillful manner is having a direct, detrimental affect on the enjoyment of me and many others.

Actually, I would refute both of these.

It’s not very sensible for someone to spend time playing a game with a bunch of people if they don’t enjoy it. In actual fact, I think everyone does play a game like GW2 for their own pleasure, and not directly for other’s pleasure. As long as what they’re doing doesn’t subtract from someone else’s fun, it’s a perfectly reasonable way to play. Subtracting from someone’s fun would be something like harassing another individual, verbally abusing or insulting them, or griefing them in some manner. Not participating in an event or game mode in the “proper” way doesn’t subtract from other’s enjoyment, it just may not contribute to it.

One way of looking at it is that you would like such “low quality” individuals to act according to your desires because that would be pleasing to you. So really, I’d say we’re all out to get more or less the same abstract thing, and there’s no reason to label people and start pointing fingers around.

In regards to being nice only going so far and not blaming people for getting upset, I would entirely blame them for getting upset. The only person who can control your emotions are you, and you’re not likely to get a positive response out of people by firing back at them.

If you really want people to do what you want, there’s a reliable way to get that to happen that doesn’t require coercion, threats, or intimidation. It boils down to you convincing them that doing what you want helps them get what they want. That means you might have develop and understanding of their motivations, genuinely care about their desires, and lead them forward. However, I think this is generally not something people are really willing to go through with (I know I’m not 99% of the time), so that’s why we see what exists now.

The only thing you can do if people do not want to play nice is to ignore them and report them. But just give them a chance to stop before you count them out as a horrible person or a troll.

Getting mean back will NEVER work and could end up with you reported as well.
