The PvP forum likes to do these after a big patch and it really helps. So lets do one for living story! BE CONSTRUCTIVE! Really try to think of everything you enjoyed, even if you are a casual player talking about the wurm. All perspectives matter, so casuals, talk about the wurm! Those who couldn’t care less about the story, tell us about it anyways! I suggest doing FOUR of these:

  1. The Wurms
  2. The Marionette
  3. The Story Stuff
  4. Overall

Wurm

Good

  1. It’s nice to have a hardcore boss that isn’t beaten on the first day.
  2. The mechanics are pretty interesting.
  3. The solution to the boss isn’t as simple as stacking and burning.
  4. Condi builds are not only helpful, but necessary!
  5. Multiple stages!
  6. Permanent content.

Bad

  1. Targeting! This makes amber extraordinarily difficult.
  2. Rewards. The rewards are pitiful. Unless you are truly a player that only plays for rewards, you will probably skip this or beat it and never return. They also encourage burning ONE wurm rather than finishing the whole thing.
  3. Conveyance. It’s not clear WHY we are doing the damage we do most of the time. One burn, we take out 25%. Next burn, 5%. What!?
  4. Bugs. Literally every stage of this hit a bug. The escort, the wurms and the heads all had at least one bug and now there’s talk about possible scaling bugs. I think this boss would have been downed a lot faster if both targeting and these issues were resolved. Maybe the living story team should be given a bit more time to polish stuff before releasing it?

Missing

  1. A new fail mechanic. Timers are getting a bit old. Marionette nailed it.

Marionette

Good

  1. New fail mechanic. It really brings agency to keeping the event from failing.
  2. Epic as hell.
  3. Puts a lot of agency in the hands of the players. Me throwing immobs everywhere helps keep the champions in line. Me basically soloing the bosses feels great.
  4. Encourages community. I always cheer on the other spokes!
  5. Splits up the zerg. Then it splits up those zergs again.
  6. Great rewards. It rewards you for getting farther in the fight VERY noticeably AND very well. Very likely that you will get at least an okay reward, even if you don’t do incredibly well.

Bad

  1. Inability to help others in other fights. If you win, congrats, but if they die, you lose.
  2. Repetitive mobs. For the most part, the twisted that charge in remain the same. Two champions and a horde of things that die almost instantly. While the mobs around that change, I wish there were more twisted types.
  3. Achievements. They are really confusing and seem to be impossible to get. I swear I’ve dodged that thing for the entire round AND beaten the entire marionette and still didn’t get the achievement.

Missing

  1. DON’T LEAVE ME

Story

Good

  1. More background on characters.
  2. New character is kinda cool.
  3. Scarlet’s layer is great! I loved the projector and what it hints at. The pictures on the walls… UGH its great environment story telling.

Bad

  1. The LA instance is kind of boring. I wish there was a better way to deliver dialogue. Cutscenes are tough to make, but this method is pretty boring.
  2. Facial expressions during dialogue. They’re all bored. Never happy or sad or anything. Really pulls me out of it.

Missing

  1. Nothing.

Overall

Good

  1. Love bosses.
  2. Permanent content.
  3. Great community building. A great reason to pop out the commander tag.

Bad

  1. I think a lot of players will be kind of one and done with this content. The thing about boss style content is that it only holds your attention until you beat it or decide it’s impossible. Wurm really only holds attention for hardcore players.

Missing

  1. Casual content. Many casual players feel really left out of this update. All they really got was the power core farming stuff. Marionette I think is a bit too hard to be call casual content. Especially when so much rides on you during the boss fights.
  2. Good rewards. I got a lot of greens tho.
  3. Overflow revamp. Afkers are spawns of satan when trying to organize a zerg. KEEK DEM.

They said that they had technical difficulties about helping others in Mario fight so they removed that possibility.

For Wurm, you can target them just at the beginning of fight without problem.

Mario?? It’s Mari, it’s a girl! Plus it fits my rhyme: Mari, Mari, quite contrary…how do your chains fall? With dps and skillfullness, and little players all on the ball.

OT: great assessment, I agree

Good points there.

I agree, it would be nice for the marionette after a platform broke a regulator to have the option to burn down the wall (yeah takes time, but it’s better than watching things go horribly wrong) to be able to assist (range at least) into another platform. Even if it was just to throw banner in.

Finally, a well-written constructive post. Bravo.

On your note regarding the inconsistent damage during wurm burn phases – that is a bug, and it’s one that is really discouraging people from attempting it.

edit: Also regarding your note on not getting achievements for Mari. You really have to dodge the attacks. If you are a guardian, aegis won’t help you get the achievement even though it blocks a hit.

casuals rewards scale with completion on both bosses. I don’t see how u can complain when you are rewarded for failing and by % completion.

I think the Marionette battle is an at an excellent level between the horribly easy world bosses and the super organised megaboss battles. It still requires a small degree of organisation casuals can manage while teaching a lot about working together as a larger whole.
More content like the Marionette battle would make the transition from the usual pve content to the Megabosses feel less like an impossible barrier to overcome.

Wurm

Good

  1. The fight is really difficult, not pug based
  2. Condis are getting little attention
  3. Strategies in phase 1 are interesting.

Bad

  1. We still don’t know how these fights scale
  2. Amber is too hardcore, compared to Cobalt and Crishmond
  3. DPS check in third phase. Timer is a bad fail mechanic there. Really bad.
  4. Too luck based fight.
  5. Ranger hate. Basically you don’t really need thiefs, engineers and rangers. Guardians, elementalists and mesmers are semi-useful. Warriors are superb, again.

Missing

  1. Better fail mechanic in the last phase.
  2. Rewards from fully killing it. I would love to see account bound ascender gauntlets for killing it. Now you don’t even have to fully kill it to get your title.
  3. Trait retrainer in Bloodtide Coast. I used instant trait retrainer, but it’s not a great thing.
  4. Information about noutritient. What does it do?!

What the heck is “agency?”?? I can’t figure out a word that makes sense there. Control?

Ah! I have never heard it used that way before.

noun; agency: action or intervention, esp. such as to produce a particular effect.

Wurm
I’ve only been there once, and the whole of map chat was filled with “Just do the _ wurm for the reward and ignore the other two…”

Not really conducive to even attempting the whole of the event.

I do hope that when the Marionette ends, people will pay more attention to the Wurms.

Marionette

The good:
1. Relatively little organization required. Even those who show up at the last minute can get in on the fight with relatively little prep.
2. Challenging fights with fun mechanics requiring more than spamming 11111161111…
3. Great to see other lanes cheering on the lane on the platforms

The bad:
1. Unless someone fails the chain, one can only get to the platforms once (maybe twice if they start in L1.) I understand the sickness timer, but I think it’s a bit long.
2. One platform can’t help another. Sometimes the chain event fails because a platform only has 1 or 2 people in it, while the other 4 platforms can only watch in horror as the players lay dead on the platform.
3. The portals could be open a bit longer to allow more people to make it from the entrance to the lanes up to the portals. It might alleviate some of the problems with empty platforms as well.

The story:
The good:
1. Finally, a reason to not hate Scarlet any more than we already do, and to understand a bit why she was here.
2. The promise of something BIG eventually.

The bad:
1. boooooooooooring execution
2. unclear objectives… “Go to LA and talk to ____” then what? Oh, yeah, it’s on the UI in the corner…if I click on it… Why didn’t (insert NPC) tell me?

All in all, I like this update, but I fear that once people have their meta achievements, it will be empty.

I totally disagree the story was boring. It provided a huge amount of backstory if you wanted it, and if not you could just leave the instance.

The good
The fight mechanics of the Wurm and Marionette fight are awesome.

The bad
Doing these fights un-instanced with a random giant zerg is really frustrating.

I think marionette can be completed easily by casual players. The wardens are easy enough, and the event only penalizes entire group fails, not individual fails (except for people kiting warden II away from the mines, argh)

The wurm can also be completed by casuals, but they probably won’t try enough times to beat it. I think we can all agree that carrying toxins to the extractors is not a terribly difficult task.

With certain skills and weapons, this is possible… however I’ve rarely seen a group so on the ball as to engage the thing within range of a platform that could help. In fact they seem to take delight in staying as far away as possible ;(

From the ranger point of view, barrage and entangle (entangle landing is a BIG deal!) work across platforms. I’m not sure if might and fury do, but I toss those up if someone comes in range. I heard someone say S&R worked if someone was really close, but I have not been able to try that.

Shatterer is casual content. There is no chance that will ever ever ever fail. Yes, even with the timer. Marionette fails all the time. It’s not casual content. When people are talking about “Omg my server finally got it once!”, it’s no casual.

The wurms are not casual content. I’m not even going to bother backing that up with facts.

My 2 cents… And it may be less than constructive…

Fix the camera already. I have no idea the technical limitations, but good lordy.

One of the biggest reasons the platforms are even remotely as tough as they are is the freaking camera.

Marionette is a great fight. The randomness of the platform ruins it completly but its better than all other bosses.

The wurm is just one big mess, without a guide to know what you are suppose to do you just have 100 people standing around trying to kill stuff and get either instakilled or dazed for most of the time. One of the worst fights I have ever seen, only to be trumpt by the worst in this game, the battle against zaithan.
Please promote the people who came up with the marionette, and no more of that wurm thing please, it’s just for one or 2 servers without overflows, if you are in an overflow you can better stop, never going to work.

NSP has failed Shatterer, hate to say it but it happens pretty regular. Usually just due to numbers though.

NSP has also beaten Teq several times and NSP is a pretty casual server.

We’ve also beaten Mari, several times, again with plenty of casual players taking part.

I think ultimately, if we got the numbers, now that we know the mechanics, we could ultimately add the wurm to our Temple rotation. Which is typically a zerg fest.

I’m not saying it’s casual friendly content right now, but as time goes on, i think these fights will be more casual friendly eventually.
