Useless Armor
kitten , it’s so strange that light armor users are squishy xD !
Deary, that is why you have other abilities that heavy armor people do not, you have a role and need to play that role. Squishy classes are squishy in all games, it is just how it works. If you want heavy armor then you have to play a Warrior or Guardian it is simple as that.
Ya, bro. You gotta dodge, or find someone to hide behind.
A large amount of damage is from conditions(toxic pollen, bleed, poison, torment) so additional armor isn’t going to help as much.
Torment is particularly insidious, as it does double damage when you are already low on health and trying to get some breathing space between yourself and the mobs.
And those toxic archers love to plink away at you from out of camera, with arrows that are applying torment.
Not that the confusion field spam from hypnoss helps. In particular if you get one or more of elite rank spamming ogres everywhere…
The light-armoured classes each have a different healthpool. The Necromancer has the highest healthpool in the game (joint with the Warrior), along with a secondary healthbar. Mesmers fall into the middle class in terms of health (alongside the Engineer and Ranger). Elementalists are at the bottom (with the Thief and Guardian).
Armour Rating is only part of the issue.
However, all classes, even super-squishy Elementalists and Thieves, have ways to mitigate, avoid, circumvent and otherwise deal with the damage. To survive to the top on your own, you simply need to know how to play your class. You can’t rely on armour or health to carry you to the top as in other games.
Most frustrating points in games just require the player to try different things or simply get better at the aspects which help complete the challenge. Survivability and awareness can get you through a lot of challenges in GW2 without the zerg, so I’d take some time to figure out what skills and playing techniques help your individual characters the most. Work to better yourself at executing those techniques/skill uses. If you can’t pinpoint what things are annihilating you, pay attention as you run through. It’s usually as easy as spotting a charge up attack or “That enemy type always starts fights with that high damage strike/stun”
If you’re being knocked around, bring stun break to get on your feet immediately after the hit, or a stability skill if available to essentially prevent any kind of stunning. Conditions are a pain, but every class has a way of managing them. In this one, the mines aren’t a big deal. Learn their radius so you can set them off safely or properly run past them. (You get 1 sec or so to clear/dodge out if you do run into them) From what I’ve experienced there shouldn’t be too many one shots from mobs unless they are elite or champs. The only other thing that really takes you out are mines.
If many players have completed the content, then it’s on you to rise to the challenge!
My advise:
- Go through the tower as a group.
- Don’t run past all the mobs, but clear them as a group.
- Occasionally stop at the purification equipment, to cleanse yourself of pollen, and allow natural healing to take effect.
- Bring stun breakers and condition cleansing.
- Do not charge blindly into the mine fields, and expect to emerge alive on the other end. Trigger a mine carefully by getting just close enough to set it off, and then backing away. Or just go around it in a wide circle, if that is possible.

I was rezzing someone and then two mines respawned, I was fine and didn’t trigger them, then came some idiot running by triggering both mines killing me and bringing along a train of mobs that finished me off. Its fine if it happens once but 5 times in a row….. that’s well over 30 silver in waypoint costs down the drain. Not to mention that nobody stopped to even try to rez me.
Besides the timeframe in which that happened, I’d say the tower was pretty fun…. for 2 days. Now I’m back to wandering around the world wondering if there’s something I haven’t found yet.

The point I think they are making is armor is actually * useless * at this point in how things are being done. There is a difference of being squishy and a difference of your being one shotted.
For example, if it takes 3 hits to kill me with armor on, and still takes 3 hits when I am naked what is the point then? You might as well just go full glass cannon.
While this may not be the exact case, I think a lot of people feel that armor might be too weak in some cases to having no validity anymore.
You tried to PvE without a warrior? /shakes head
Regardless of armour-type; if you don’t dodge, you die. It’s basically that simple. Watching the enemy and getting out of the way when they look like they’re winding up for a big move is pretty paramount to survival.
Additionally, there will be times where you’re one-shotted and there’s zero you can do about it, it’s just the way the game’s made. Frustrating at times yes, but thankfully those situations are mostly when you should have others around you to help get you back up, mostly…
There is also health regen food which is relatively cheap to buy or make (I am using peach pies).
As mentioned, what OP is pointing at is a fact that armor dont change the damage taken.
I have an medium armor, wont mention my profession as its not proffesion fault, and im killed in 2 hits from mines, wher 1st mine take 70% oh my hp and 2nd one finish me of, if i take off my armor 1st mine will hit me for 90% of my hp and again 2nd one will finish me of, so why do we even wear armor in the first place, town cloths would give me same level of protection equal 0.
Keeping to the armor class, increasing or reducing toughnes on it wont change anything if every 2 hits will kill you anyway.
Also i saw many times warrior geting 1 shoted by mine, if i can word it like that.
p.s. i can dodge and i rarely die to mines, im just using them as example. so dont start pointless disscusion whit me about L2P issue, ok
no problem getting through the tower using doging and LOS with my Engineer. My only used ‘defense’ is heal-on-crit foodAnd the mines are clearly big and visible and you have 2 secs for dogding if their red circle appears.
So even if you don’t wanna hear it: its clearly a l2P Issue. Don’t walk into the red circles. Not that new, isn’kitten

It is when when they don’t deal any more damage and have virtually the same utility output.

Congratulation!!, you just won the 1st price for completly disregarding the meaning of my post.
Just for you i will have to point out what i was talking about, and that was relation of your armor value to damage taken.
p.s. some advice for future
- read the post
- think what you just read(understand it)
- think about your response(use logic)
- think 2nd time about your response(make sure that you used logic)
- and finaly write it down

Ok, retar** aside, in gw2 ther are boss’es/mobs/other things that want to kill you, that make armor feel like a tissue paper, literaly, in fight against them wearing an armor or not wearing it at all wont change the fact that if you get hit you will simply die.
Well the only thing that wearing armor will change is your damage output as armor have some stats that will increas it, so basicaly armor is like extension of weapon rather than gear to protect yoursefl.

Okay so….I haven’t done this with my Mesmer yet…but on my Necro I soloed it and ran a good portion of the tower without a zerg (mostly because the chambers put me in Overflows w/o my 1 party member). Both my Necro & Mesmer are decked out in full Knight’s gear (Tough/Prec/Power). 1 Ascended amulet on each, with MF utility, exotics for the rest. Berzerker gems on the Necro & Condition/Toughness on the Mesmer. I have no problem soloing stuff in general on either character? Keep in mind they’re both built for survivability in their builds/gear and I dodge/evasion run constantly. I keep condition clears up on Mesmer, and Consume Conditions on Necro. Not sure what class you play, but I hope it gives you some ideas all the same.

thanks bro!
let me explain my answer:
1. read the post yes, I readed it.
2. think what you just read(understand it) my thoughts: Oh, somebody complaining about armor and usefulness of ascended armor, and how hard he had to work for his armor etc. using terms like NOT FUN (note the caps), useless and that light armor seriously needs a buff (so yes, i fully understand it)
3. think about your response(use logic) I followed exactly your hint: Use Logic! Player complaints about some pve-content screaming XYZ useless, need serious buffing, because it can’t be a L2P Issue!!!
4. think 2nd time about your response(make sure that you used logic) check!
5. and finaly write it down check!
wasn’t the intention of your thread a little bit of whining or is it just me? Then a big sry for you.
yes, heavy armor gots oneshotted to by the mines to. Because you have to move out of red AOE circles regardless of armor Thats is what I answered you for relation of your armor value to damage taken.
Just for you i will point out: armor doesn’t matter (in case of the mines), skill does. Which leads me directly to my conclusion → Its clearly a L2P Issue, Light armor needs no buffing (in my opinion).

…sigh…
OK, i will go slowly specialy for you and will point things out one at time
- i was trying to explain what OP meant by his/her post(atleast i think thats what he/she meant by it)
- i not complaning but point a fact.
- i dont care about L2P issue cus i already soloed the tower, floor boss’es are very easy when not upscaled(Veterans instead of champions)
- i used mines as example, to point out that ther are elements of the game against which some mechanics wont work(armor)
- i never mentioned difficulity it any form or having any problem with it
- i never mentioned ascended armor
- i never mentioned buffing armor
- i never mentioned "NOT FUN term in my post
- i never mentioned working har(d) (stupid censor) on geting my armor and complaning how usless it is now
- IM NOT OP of this thread, with whom you seems to misstake me
- lastly you fail at reading with understanding
So in short, you didnt use any form of logic/comprehension in you response.

At least in Claw if you die people will res you. In the tower if you stop to res someone your dead too. The revive orbs are useless as others will run mobs on you as you res and your dead again.
When I read this I understod directly what kind of strategy OP uses… “If you stop to res someone”, well that means you are running through the floors and pulling every mob in the area and this tower is circular wich makes agro last longer so you will have lots and lots of fun following you, offcourse you will die no matter how much armor you got.
There is many strategies to compleating this tower, but running is not the best one if you don’t know exactly what to do and save your skills to dodge and block but on the other hand running through could also ruin it for other players struggling to fight their way through the tower. I mean why are the mobs there? Is this an obstacle course where coming to the top in 10 seconds earns you a gold medal? There isn’t even a achievement to get by running.
I have compleated everything in the tower and most of it was a pushover, the only hard part in the tower is that darn spider.
But anyway through my experience fighting your way through the tower is the best way becouse there is mostly others also figthing in the tower and people will catch up and in the end you are a big neat group who can help and res eachother if you die.
Where does this run run run mentality come from? Is it from the dungeons? I hope Anet will adress this for every content in this game with more doors or something.

Yeah fight your way through as everybody runs past you, then die and watch as everybody runs past you trampling over your dead body.

That’s a very stupid thing to say, is it not?
“I die becouse others run so I have to run to! (So then you will be another one who runs and kills the ones who struggles with fighting their way up)”
Very rarely happens, or atleast for me.
Most people run solo or duo and will en up having trouble and with the help of others they will realize that running is not a sulution.
So instead of falling to the bad idéa and run yourself and whine on forums that it’s to hard, teach others to actually enjoy the content and fight instead of just rushing through everything.

Its a infinite loop, one started ther is no way out.
Tho if you fight your way throu than you need to be mindful of what is behind you, everytime you see a player or group catching up to you, end your current fight and move to the side, prepering escape rout is also good idea.
you never knew when train will come…mob train…
Tbh in this tower, other players are your worst enemy.
people realy can become paranoid ther, and its not thanks to the halucination

Doesn’t sound very stupid to me, sounds the logical thing to do.

Logical yes, but it dosent mean that is the corect way of doing this, tho you cant afect other players mentality now, can you.
The OP does have a good point: that the value of armor is unbalanced in the game. No matter how good your armor, there are tons of things in PVE that will one-shot kill you. And this is part of why so many people are going full zerker. Because if armor is so irrelevant, you might as well max out on damage. There clearly is a bit of a balance issue there, regardless of the difficulty of the tower (personally I think the difficulty of the tower is just right).
And the reason for the one-shots are to shoehorn in the dodge mechanic into PVE, one that is clearly designed for PVP. Why do i say that? Because a good dodge can make or break a spike chain. But all fights in PVE are attrition fights if you are fighting anything above trash mobs at equal level. And so the one-shots become overly harsh. In particular when you are facing down more than one mob at the same time. End result is AOE spamming zerkers trying to clear out the mobs as fast as possible.
None of the enemies in the tower will 1-shot you, although the spider queen does hurt a lot. Everything except the group events are solo-able, so if you get to a group event that’s blocking the way, just wait until more people show up. Once you learn to avoid the mines the tower is actually fairly easy.
Sorrow’s Furnace Commander
“You’re the mount, karka’s ride you instead, and thus they die happy!”-Colin Johanson
I’ve been doing the tower on my ele, and for the most part I can solo or run through as needed. Of course, having a speed boost for the mines, and having some stability for anti-knock-back is a must for me.
My main issue is when I’m fighting my way through and a half dozen people just run on thru and scale everything up for me. How nice. Then it turns into a nightmare for me. Still, not too bad usually. 4 out of 5 groups will stop and kill with me, speeding up my progress.
The glass cannon argument is poor insofar that one-shot mechanics do not make up a majority of the content. Sure there are bosses in some areas that do, but why make a build for such a small % of the content? If you get one shot you get one shot, I’d rather worry about a build that I like for the rest of the content that isn’t one-shot mechanics.
So I completely disagree with OP’s premise that because some bosses have one-shot mechanics that armor is useless in this game.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
lvl 80+ mobs in a lvl 15-25 zone is bad design
The rest of the non 1-shot attacks generally aren’t threatening to zerkers though.
My Tipp for the OP; learn to dodge and survive through skill and skills. Its not that hard, jsut learn the enemies atacks and dodge correctly. use blocks, blinds, invul and projectil reflection against their atacks etc.
I play all classes as berserker and its not special, not hard, not pro, not anything but just the way the game is.
Toughness and Vitality gear is completely useless in PVE, because you can survive everything with skill.
Get it!
The rest of the non 1-shot attacks generally aren’t threatening to zerkers though.
Not when you are being mobbed. Or especially when your class starts with only 10k of HP. :P
Its true that damage scaling in this game is out of whack, and most things aren’t even a threat even to Berserker or Assassin players, but the issue is in these scenarios the chances of getting mobbed are very high, and thats when armor pays off. The only exception I’d say is Hundred Blades which melts trash away, but due to all of the CC in the tower you’re going to have to use Stability for that.
Edit: Also, many Zerk Warriors don’t seem to understand that their base stats are twice that of Ele and 1.5x that of Guard (though Guard can reset HP alot easier), and when you take Healing Signet and Adrenal Health into account, well…
I run a full Zerk Necro due to the poor state of condition damage, and having 18K HP and an extra health bar gives me roughly 2.5x the survivability of an Ele, even without all of their CC its still pretty rediculous. Not all professions are equal in regards to how useful armor is to them, despite “skilled players” saying otherwise.
I’m usually really sweet… but this an internet forum and you know how it has to be.
