Yeah, has been my pain from day one. I always tell that I quit the game in November because of real life issues, but that’s a lie. I did it because I couldn’t stand playing a kitten.

Uhhh…did you actually look at that link? 99% skin coverage. Since when does “covered from head to toe” = “underwear model”?

I’m assuming since it refers to Norn in particular we’re talking about racial armor? Some people like skimpy armor, some people like full armor. Racials I think provide for both (mostly), if you don’t like an armor, you don’t have to wear it…

I agree the T2/T3 cultural is rather skimpy but there are tons of other options avaiable. The T1 is a lot better already, I don’t like the skirt/pants but the rest is awesome. You are not forced to wear cultural armor and if the skimpy parts bother you, you can always replace them with pieces from another set.

It would be nice to have more cultural armor options that cover the body a bit more, but nobody is forcing you to buy the T2/T3 sets. Lots of people also like armor that shows skin, because it shows their tattoos nicely. And let’s face it, the majority of players enjoys seeing some skin, especially if it’s females. So you can’t avoid having some skimpy sets in the game.

Just because there are armors that show some skin doesn’t mean your character has to look like that. Plenty of options to choose from. I don’t like too skimpy armor either, so I just go with the more covered looks.

You mean the most conservative “skimpy” armor anyone has ever put in an MMO? What about the 99% other armors that cover everything? If anything, this game could use some skimpy options.

This is a pluralistic society buddy, if you don’t like it you can chose what you like (of which there are more than enough options), not kitten on others.
Not to mention, being a GW1 vet, I find the airy cultural armors much more fitting for a Norn than a tin can.

Every time I see a thread like this, I can’t help but laugh. I’m curious OP, did you bother checking how the sets cultural armor for male Norn look like? Because so it happens that some of the male outfits show quite a bit of skin too. And if you’re one of those that think that when a female is portrayed wearing clothing showing her skin off it is wrong, but when a male is portrayed like that everything is perfectly ok, then I have some bad news for you…

For the Norn wearing skimpy outfits is a cultural thing. They’re highly resistant to cold and consequently the climate of Shiverpeaks doesn’t force them to cover their bodies extensively, of what they take full advantage. It is even said in-game that when they wear furs at all, they do it solely to honor the spirits, and not to protect themselves from the weather. When it comes to armor itself, wearing less protection is equivalent to showing that they they are fearless and too strong, tough, awesome or whatever to be forced to rely on some puny protection. It’s also to intimidate the enemy. For all any Norn cares, he or she could wrestle whole horde of Jotun naked, if the sheer fact of him or her being naked would make his or her saga more impressive (and it most likely would). And that is what every Norn cares about the most after all.

Besides, it’s not like the Norn cultural gear includes the only skimpy armor in this game. Quite on the contrary, there are equally, or even more skin-showing outfits available to Humans and Sylvari. Cultural gear alone, when it comes to light armor – sylvari t1 and t2, human t3, when it comes to medium armor – sylvari t1, human t3.

The only races that are truly different in this aspect are Asura and Charr. But both are different for a very simple reason – they only have 1 armor model for both genders. Which actually makes quite a large portion of Asura playerbase unhappy from what I’ve heard.

So it seems to me that Heavy T3 legs is the only issue here. Why does this bother you so much? You don’t have to wear it, in fact it will save you quite the gold not to. The little thing on the front that connects to the chest piece bothers me more, makes it impossible to pair with another chest.

This game is by far one of the most conservatively designed far as armor goes. I understand why you’re upset about females always looking trashy, but this game really doesn’t cater to that much at all. T3 cultural for Heavy on Norn is far from the worst look that I’ve seen. T3 light for humans is much more showy than it by far.

And if you don’t like the armor you can always opt to use something else. I was planning on using the Vigil set on my Heavy armor Norn lady because while it does show some skin it isn’t too much and it still looks like it’d be good protection. If you want a more cultural look maybe the armor from Honor of the Waves would look good too?

Idk, honestly you’re complaining about something that’s really near non-existant on this game. Try playing something like TERA like I did for a while and then you’ll see just how conservative this game is. xD I think the guys and girls at ANet have much better design aesthetic in a lot of ways (although they could really use some work in others).

Yeah, this game is WAY too conservative. To the point where our choice are ornate to OMG gaudy. I’m much rather have simpler, skimpier choices. Ones that end up looking far more classy and elegant in the end for me.

btw…. do you even play a Norn? If not gtfo with this thread. I have a whole roster of Female Norns. Do not appreciate being told what to do and what I have to look at every second of playing this game.

I believe saying that armor sets in GW2 are the most modest in MMOs at this point is a bit too much. However, at the same time there are plenty of titles that are much less conservative. Whole eastern branch of the genre. And some games from the western branch as well.

GW2 is by far one of the best games on the market when it comes to the variety of options. You want skimpy outfit? No problem. You want to cover everything, head to toe? Sure, there are outfits for that. There is plenty of middle ground too. Hell, there are even pants for magic users, they are not forced to wear big blue dresses some people call “robes”. And heavy armor sets that don’t make you choose between wearing a plate and chainmail swimsuit or looking like an offspring of an unholy union between a hedgehog and a scrap heap

The only part at which Anet has somewhat failed in my opinion is disproportion between trench coats and all the other armor models when it comes to medium armor.

And OP, you’re not complaining about a group of armor sets. You’re not even complaining about a single armor set. You have problem with literally 1 piece of 1 set of heavy armor (which, in fact, wouldn’t fit the rest of the set if it was designed differently). And you’re making whole thread about it, in which you accuse Anet of making the Norn females look like underwear models. Don’t you think that is the very definition of overreacting?

For example I think that female variants of both the Duelist armor set and the medium Human cultural t3 look both ridiculous and hideous at the same time. But you won’t see me complaining about it on the forums. I can simply choose not to use them, because there are other, better options.

It’s a called a FANTASY game for a reason and some people enjoy that aspect of it, some don’t, so what? It’s not being forced down your throat since you can make quite a wide variety of characters with a wide variety of clothes/armors. I don’t get what’s all the freaking fuss about polygonal underwear, is that really such a problem for you? Most of the armors in this game aren’t even all that revealing considering what other games of the same genre have.
Give the designers some creative freedom, they aren’t designing actual fully functional armor, they’re just creating fantasy clothing.

If you don’t like it, don’t use it.

I totally agree with op. many of Norn female armor is showing a lot of arms. How could a modest lady in the real world ever show her arms off like that? I certainly havnt run into any lady in real world that dress in such skimpy manners. I mean look at her!

what is more outrageous is that, some of the norn female armor takes it to the next extreme, showing off their shoulders and other more shameful body parts! especially a few particular light armor sets that i feel too ashamed to link. while i do understand that a lot of people do like skimpy dresses and it certainly has its aesthetic appeal, but this game is NOT all about how your character look. Yes, i could choose to not wear the skimpy armors, but is that really a choice when you go to LA and all you see is female norns, standing tall and proud, ignorant of their own shame with their naked arm and shoulders flailing around!!

this again, brings out the real issue with our society, our obsession with physical beauty and not who we are inside. the overly skimpy armor in this game is a perfect example of that.

I’ve linked a modest looking armor in the attachment. Although she is still showing her facial features and her curves, it is at least a set of armor that preserve a norn lady’s virtue and can actually serve as a protection tool in a real fight, and i think everyone should follow these dress codes.
