Hi, I would like to enlighten myself on the history and culture of the Norn. Have they always been inhabitants of the Tyria continent? Have they always called the Shiverpeaks home? Were they always Goliaths? What is the history of their relationship with the other races that inhabit the world of Tyria? And how were their alliances formed? Does anyone know where I can refer to for the answers I seek?

A few questions can’t be answered, cause they involve theories. But the rest can be found in the lore

The GW2 official wiki answers many questions: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Norn
The history, culture and religion parts give many informations.

Some talk with Jeff Grubb about Norn:

Another nice interview with Jeff Grubb and the German Wartower community:

There are also some videos on YouTube, where the Norn lore is topic, liked this one alot:

Basically there is not a lot of confirmation on Norn ancient history.

Room for speculation makes everything more interesting. In GW1 we knew even less about the history. In wide feature there can be new happenings, which reveal more and more about the roots.
I enjoy that. It is also good for ArenaNet leaving some things unanswered, they have more space to amplify the lore

Thank you Carlos, the links you provided were very insightful. I now have a better understanding of the race and why there is so little information provided of their historical background.

I always thought it humorus that they were called Norn. The Norn are the 3 women who tend the tree of life, Ygdrasill, and are equivalent to the Greek Fates. Even the Aesir gods such as Odin and Thor, revere the Norn, for they weave the Wyrd and know all beings fates.

Here’s an additional tidbit I found while digging around in the wiki, a theory of the origins of the Norn race. Thought-provoking, for sure.

Found in the Lost Tribes subtitle in the Kodan section, The Wisdom and Power of the Kodan:

“The kodan do not claim any connection or relationship to the norn race, but some Voices choose to interpret early stories of a lost group of kodan as an explanation of the origin of the norn. If this is true, they argue, then the norn are failed kodan who have forgotten their place as judges and protectors of the balance, and that is why their true “bear” form has been replaced with a fragile, furless state. Because of this pressure from their shaman, the kodan often treat the norn as spiritual failures, possibly even a race moving backwards in the cycle of life, toward primitivism and destruction — and that even as the dwarves before them, if this is true, the norn are a race on the edge of extinction."
