The first point I’m wondering. Anet once said, a few years ago that they didn’t like the whole crafting thing as it was in all mmo’s. I’m not seeing any difference since it’s still a terrible, not fun, time consuming activity I like to avoid in Guild Wars 2.
With the upcoming patch it seems like there’s no avoiding crafting anymore. I think it’s an awful decision to make the new ascended gear only available through crafting. Yes yes, people say you don’t really need to have those ascended gear cause they’re a little bit better than exotics. Well.. if you count 6 armor pieces with some weapons, the difference will be quite significant.
Why wasn’t it just possible to make the better and new gear available through ‘fun’ activities. Make them available at dungeon vendors for higher prices than exotics as a simple alternative which still isn’t much fun. I just can’t believe it, it’s only starting to create a distance between me and the game, and make me think people have to much advantage over me. And to be honest.. who in this world seriously enjoys crafting…?

Make it through dungeons.. definitely not through minigames or crafting. The .. “Hardest”.. content should give the best rewards.. not the most time consuming.

Just for the sake of completion, crafting is not the only source of ascended weapons. The live stream mentioned that it will possible, albeit rare, to obtain ascended weapons from any source that will drop ascended mats.
It may very well be possible to get your weapon just by doing those events, which currently include champion loot bags, WvW keep, tower, and camp takeovers, jumping puzzles, dungeons, and Orr temple events.

Ascended gear will be sellable on the trading post. Maybe cheaper than legendaries.

“First off, crafting is not the only way to get Ascended Weapons! Anywhere you can get an Ascended Material drop or an Ascended item drop there is also a rare chance that you will get an Ascended Weapon chest that allows you to choose which weapon type you want from within a stat combo. "
Then theres the TP. You’re not going to have to do the crafting you so hate.

Incorrect.
Ascended gear will (as with current Ascended items) be account-bound on acquire and soul-bound on equip.

The Announcement today makes it sound like we’ll have so much fun in the discovery panel of the crafting window once the Ascended weapons come. Yay! We’ll get to mindlessly input the same predictable formulas in the discovery boxes!
IMO crafting is the worst/least fun part of the game! The only crafting profession that is somewhat interesting is Cooking because of the lack of such rigid formulas. But it is, in it’s own way, infuriating with all its non-bankable tiers of intermediate ingredients.

Because all the employees with good dreams, ideas and imagination have been terminated.
Jokes aside, crafting is okay, it’s the time gated stuff that is a extremely cheap way to sell off content which “last”.

Did you guys not read the blog post? Ascended items have a chance to drop from chests that normally drop ascended crafting materials. The best part is you get to choose what stats go on that Ascended item.

I thought it was that you get the stats and choose the weapon that goes with it?
Well, either way, should be pretty good!

Anyone else get the feeling they had some interesting ideas, but at some point realized they were either not going to have time to build something entirely new OR it wasn’t going to get used anyway, so why bother?
Part of me is listening to them talk about the Ascended Weapon forging and going “this sounds like if it had been in the game at the start, it could have been awesome”. Actually having to get these unusual components by doing various activities so they can be brought together into a powerful piece of equipment?
Too bad it is added a year later, because now nobody thinks it’s neat.

You’re so cute, thinking you’ll be able to avoid crafting ascended weapons because you can drop them…. drop rates in this game are so high, I mean, look at the exotics. Common, right? Now take that minuscule chance of dropping an exo and divide by 200….

What’s your point? The potential for ascended weapons to drop is still there for you if you only want to play a single aspect of the game.

Judging by how rarely Exotics drop, it’s not unthinkable for Ascendeds to drop even less often. Of course, we should come to expect this already. If would be nice if they only dropped off legendary enemies because then at least you’ll feel that you’ve earned it. Dropping off normal enemies, veterans, lieutenants, or champions doesn’t really feel right.

I would agree that crafting is rather boring now. I do like that we’ll have to actually go out and do things in order to get many of these. Hopefully it will get players out in the worth and do events again.
Cooking used to be one of my favorites because of all the discoverable recipes. Once you learn them though the magic slowly fades from it. All other professions really never held a candle to the variety in cooking.

I have a lot of fun reading posts about Ascendeds being obtainable from chests, events…..
Come on, the chance will be probably same as chance to get precursor :-D If you want or need Ascendeds weapons you will most probably have to craft it…the long time consuming way…

If they would just add some really hard and unique dungeons and make the last boss have a chance to drop such ascended weapons it would be much better. And then I’m not talking about 1 or 2% but earlier like 10/20%. This would promote the game to a more social MMO. I got the feeling that Anet wants to innovate too much but by doing that they’re creating a bigger distance with the genre every update. MMO’s are about going with groups to slay stuff for loot and upgrading your character simply said. Just like it was in Guild Wars 1 which I didn’t have problems with.

This game never awarded higher stats for achieving something hard… If it did, it would be just like any other mmo.. That kind of system always creates huge gaps between people… The powerful get more and more power, while a casual solo players gets nothing no matter how much time (s)he puts into it.. So different level players can’t even play together.. Can’t you see the problem with this?..
Doing hard content, either speeds your progress up, or gives you cosmetic awards.. Thus no power gap occurs between people.. Skill-gap always exists and that is what makes a player different, not their stats.. That is the proper way of playing a game as far as i am concerned..
But i do think ascended level items should be available somehow via dungeon/WvW tokens..

I think forcing people to craft causes gaps between players. I’d rather quit playing than to enjoy the game to it’s fullest if it requires you to craft stuff.

Crafting is only the easy part the tricky part will be getting the mats, almost sure wvw, dungeon and lot of other fun stuff will drop the account only mats so it will not all be about the gold or at least I hope Anet wont make BIS require TP mats only ;O

Deal with it; I love crafting and it is about time we got something to work towards.
Remember that the next time you see someone with the ascended backpiece I won’t have until it is either dropped/made available in WvW, or open world or becomes craftable due to the fact it is only obtainable by way of fractals.

They’ll drop, it’ll just be incredibly rare. So, in theory you can run FotM in hopes of getting it, but crafting is less RNG based.

They said that it will be a rare drop chance. They also said about a rare drop chance when mentioning jade weapon tickets from droppable dragon bash boxes. That turned out to be significantly lower than 1%. In other words, if you start gathering cash for a legendary, you will likely get it before you get an ascended drop you want.

If the information is right, for one vision crystal you will need 3×500 “once per location daily” type of account bound mats. I’m sure farming those will be fun.

Almost all the time will be spend gathering material from dungeon, wvw, champ farming, jp, harvesting.

If we win. What i saw on the preview doesn’t fill me with hope that this event will be frequently done. Especially knowing that Anet’s meaning of “you will have a chance to obtain” usually means “have fun with low chance RNG”.

I think there’s both good and bad to the time gating thing, depending on how they go about it. As I see it now though; these weapons have multiple different ways to get them so…
Lets say an item = 30 days at least to make with daily mats, and that same item is available from chest and boss drops. You could be opening multiple chest and killing that same boss every day, as well as getting the daily mat. When you hit that 30 day point and are one of the majority who’re hated by RNG most likely you will have never gotten the ascended drop but can now get it with crafting.
It’s like a failsafe for sh***y luck where you’re not going to be unable to obtain these ‘rare’ items forever when you play everyday w/o getting RNG rewards. ;s Precursor “scavenger hunt” will probably be done like that too.

Did you play GW1? That is how crafting should be. You do the work of gathering materials, then you take them to an NPC who will craft the item for you. No crafting leveling grind needed. No pretense that player characters are also expert artisans in addition to being god-tier fighters. The whole idea that you can have a player economy for crafting when every single person in the world has one of the same eight jobs is a definitive trope of MMO game design. It is objectively stupid and it only works this way because people have gotten used to it being the same way in every MMO. Now with account bound crafting Anet is pretty much admitting that the crafting economy is broken, but they still want people to goldsink their way to 500 before they can get their gear. Crafting is one of the biggest backwards steps that GW2 took that made it more like WoW and the other dregs of the industry. GW2 had the courage to dismantle the trinity, but somehow regressed in its crafting system. It’s frankly perplexing that Anet did this.
You could actually replace GW2’s crafting level system with Mystic Forging for consumable progression unlocks and it’d be the same thing. As in, you’re a T1 leatherworker, so put in 250 rawhide, 250 jute, 500 fine T1 materials, get a consumable book that makes you T2 leatherworker. More or less the same thing as leveling now, without having to ‘discover’ items you don’t want and having to dump all the excess. Or being forced to play the market for your own items in order to recover your investment.

It take 20 minutes to level crafting to 400.
Really, it’s not a big deal.
There’s hardly any crafting involve.
The painful(or fun) part is getting the money and material to level crafting and assembly your ascended gear.
