Ecto again
Ecto was the main form of currency in gw1. It shouldnt be a surprise to anyone that ectos have a lot of worth. Its how it should be.
hard enough to make them cry, not just rivers but oceans."
I may have been not careful enough, but I didn’t see huge quantities of ectoplasms being used up in the creation of Ascended Weapons. The recipe I saw required only 1.
“You can’t have more than 10 HS decks because that would confuse people”
“30 fps is more cinematic”
The champion farming is not helping with the shortage of ectos. In fact, it may be one of the causes of the price increase. With fewer people doing events with guaranteed rares you start seeing fewer ectos on the market.
GW1 was a completely different game, Ecto in GW1 could be farmed or bought from a vendor, and was only used for FoW Armor,
In GW2 it can only be gotten from salvaging rares, with a low chance of recovering it, it is also used in ALOT of crafting abilities, they are adding more and more things that require ECTO, but no other way to obtain it, its a T6 mat, why is it not in the champ loot boxes?
C/Dust is now linked to Ecto,
The Demand is going to rapidly outstrip supply from Tuesday onwards, and id say you could easily add another 10-15s on todays price.
@zeromius, I hear what your saying, but sadly people have been shouting out on the forums for the best part of a year now that the loot for events is crap, and now its going to shine threw next week.

Yeah but the difference is there was a reliable way to farm ecto. Yesterday I salvaged 40 level 80 rares with black lion salvage kits and got less than 30 ecto. There was definitely a stealth nerf of ectos awarded from salvaging around the time of the champ loot bag update.

It was only used as a currency because of the limited amount of platinum you could store on a character capping transactions at 100 platinum necessitating the use of some valueable item for transactions over that amount. I don’t believe it was ever intended to be a currency nor should it be in this game.

Well given that you have to craft exotics in order to max out crafting to 500, there’s already more than 1 ecto usage right there. But you should take a look at what Dulfy has put together. You’ll find more ecto usage:

The loot for champions was made too good compared to loot for completing an event. Now that the temple events have something that champions alone don’t have it will give people incentive to actually complete them.

I don’t think there was a stealth nerf your sample size is too small.
I crafted and salvaged 2500 rares yesterday to sell ectos. Using mystic salvage kits (ty anet for the tons of MF stones), i was obtaining the generally accepted rate of 9 ectos to 10 rares salvaged (0.9 : 1).
I shouldn’t have to salvage 2500 rares to get a good rate of return, the sample size you did was an exception, no one in the game will hold on to 2500 rares before salvaging, it just doesn’t work that way, the ecto salvage has not been right since it was bugged last time,
The loot from champs wasn’t made to good, it was made just right to cover the NO LOOT from well any zone in the dam game over the last 8-10 months, the problem is and I don’t believe for a second they didn’t forecast this, the new champ bags just show how BAD the loot is and always has been at the temple/world events……
This game is about grind plain and simple, you have to grind for everything, if anet put an event in 1 zone that spawned unlimited waves of enemies, NO one would champ farm, they would flock to said zone/area to farm it, they need to fix the world events so that loot it rewarded for time invested, and as it stands the best example of this is the Jormag event, long, boring, no loot.

I really don’t think this is true. Look at Plix and the anchorage to arah chain, shelter’s gate and penitent camp—which used to all be the farming events people went for. Now they sit empty because everyone is going for the quick champ kills.

I’m sorry, let me rephrase my post. In a span of 3-4 hours I crafted 2500 rares and salvaged them. I didn’t hold on to 2500 rares over the course of my gameplay waiting for opportunities such as what we have right now. Neither am I advocating people hold onto an enormous amount of rares just to salvage all at once (some do this I know). My point again is that you can’t judge a mechanic to be nerfed based on a small sample size.
And this “I shouldn’t have to salvage 2500 rares to get a good return…” comment of yours is unreasonable. RNG is RNG, hell I’ve gotten 30 ectos from only 12 savlages once (yes these statistical outliers can happen the other way too).
Just chalk it up to a bad bit of luck.
Recipes only need ONE ectoplasm, and they are once-per day.
Some people jumped the ship too soon.

Absolutely. This is why I’m preying on them
Ectos can also be salvaged to get essences of luck, which I assume have higher drop rate an/or better essences ( purple?)

Makes it kind of funny then that the price of Ectos has been going up lately, since as far as we know, you only need a Grand Total of 1 per day.

Two per day if you look at what Dulfy has screenshotted. There are two recipes: Glob of Elder Spirit Residue and Lump of Mithrillium. But of course this doesn’t take into account exotic crafting (for leveling and/or salvaging) or salvaging ectos for dust or the another 5 you’ll need for the inscription. The actual ascended crafting doesn’t look too bad. It’s the globs of dark matter that we’re going to have to wait and see on.. and that can affect ectos.
My mistake,….a Total of 2 per day, and it looks like (from Dulfy screenshots), you will need 14 total?(not sure…)
The Globs of Dark matter and Crystalline dust will both be a problem, because according to the screenshots on Dulfy, it takes 10 of each to make one weapon inscription.
The Dark Matter you can only get from salvaging Exotics. (might cut off a source of Ectos)
The Dust you can get from salvaging Ectos and from enemy drops and bags. (If Dust is more valuable than the ectos in these recipes, or even equally valuable, then the price of both will skyrocket)
You are forgetting the cost of the Exotic inscription that’s needed for the ascended one. So +5 ectoplasms.

Er.. that’s precisely what I was talking about. We don’t know what the drop rate on the dark matter is going to be, so we won’t know how this will affect the exotics market and if people are going to need to be crafting more exotics, which then in turn uses up more ectos and t6 mats.
Any time there’s an update with changes to recipes/mechanics that affect existing goods, two things happen:
- speculators step up to try to make money by purchasing bulk quantities before anyone realizes the current prices might be too low.
- a small subset of people completely panic that they might be left out and start purchasing at any price they can. Some of these are worried about having enough for current needs (e.g someone trying to get their last 50 ecto to complete a legendary or other high-end item) and some are worried about being priced out in the future.
Prices shoot through the roof. And then, within a few weeks, the market returns to equilibrium. Often, especially with ectos, that equilibrium is lower than before the panic market.
tl;dr you cannot judge the long-term market for ectos based on what is happening this weekend.

Ectos also dropped in GW1 though.
lotta exotics going to be crafted to get to 500, maybe that will lower the price on them?

Exactly, and this is again why I’m capitalizing on speculation and continuing to craft 1000s of rares to salvage until the update hits. I think people will see the silliness of their speculation then and start unloading when they realize that it won’t take that many ectos to hit 450 and 500.
I’m just watching from the sidelines with amusement/interest. None of my crafters are even past 200 yet, so I won’t be crafting any Ascended items for a good while yet. The extent of my involvement in this for the foreseeable future is probably selling lower level mats to those on the hunt for Ascended gear.
The stuff is time gated, you do not need much ectos right away. And supply is less as people not doing the usual events anymore. And people fear of missing out (the train for making gold with ectos left about three weeks ago) driving the prices higher.
Only thing you need to do for your ascended is to do one or two world bosses, salavage the rares and you get your ectos. Dust? Salvage ectos. So no biggie. You need about two weeks to create an ascended weapon, so no rush. Get your two daily ectos and that’s it.
Additional ascended mats can be created from lower tier materials or famed in WvW, dungeons, bosses and temples.
