As of right now most of the top posts in this subforum are about how ArenaNet “ruined” SAB with the most recent update. I don’t post to the forums frequently, but I have to say that at this moment I have to call out this behavior.

The devs simply can’t win with you guys: cater to the players who want difficult content, and complaints will follow about how content is too difficult; compromise by making the content a NORMAL DIFFICULTY like it was supposed to be, and suddenly complaints rise up from the other end of the spectrum.

SAB normal mode was always meant to cater to the 90% of the playerbase that play the game casually. Complaints about how there was a huge difficulty spike between worlds and unfair bugs were at least valid. Now that these issues have been addressed, people are spouting “filthy casuals” with no remotely valid arguments. So you got through World 2 before the patch and maybe got a shiny new weapon skin. Does this update erase your progress? Does it take away your skin? No, all that’s hurt here is your pride, and you need to learn to suck it up. No one’s ever going to ask you for proof when you say you completed W2 before it got easy.

If you want more difficult content, just look towards Trib mode or new worlds further down the line; the devs shouldn’t be hearing whining from players that are comparable to that of little kids.

The problem here is that they also nerfed Trib mode thus making the skins “worth” less than they were before. No one is complaining about the normal mode nerfs and i’m sure that most of us think that those normal mode nerfs were justified, just leave the Trib mode alone.

So much this. It’s almost embarrassing how many people can’t handle when something is made slightly more simplified for other players to have fun too. Geysers could use some thought over the next vacation, but overall everything seems so much better off (well, besides the new mass of complainers).

Thank you.

I really despise the “filthy casuals” and “crying noobs” bullkitten going around. Maybe if a group of entitled, whiny players had ruined TM on purpose to purposely take that content away and purposely get the same special rewards without the skill but that’s not what happened – a hotfix was applied to smooth the edges of a mode meant for 90% of the playerbase, making it still challenging but reducing the frustration factor. A side effect was some of these fixes affected TM, which no one was advocating, which no one wanted, and which came as a surprise. NM players still can’t get TM skins unless they play TM – your holy cosmetic grail of awesomeness is still awesome and still something a player like me can never get.

Sure you can, just go to TM and walk through it. It is quite easy now.
Honestly though, i think we “whiners” and you “filthy casuals” can agree that Normal Mode nerf was fine but they should have left TM alone.

No. I can’t. I have trouble with W1 in Normal Mode. I’m not a playform jumper, I have an awful time with timing and a lot of the angles throw my motion sickness and spacial disabilities into such chaos that I get a migraine. I can’t do TM even now, it’s not meant for me anyhow and I’m cool with that.

Agreed that the fixes to NM shouldn’t have touched TM though. I want the hardcores to have their content, the average players to have theirs and these “casuals” you speak of to also have theirs.

It is most likely not possible to change the engine mechanics and limit it to a single mode of play.
It may be something they look to address in the next day but they could easily take the stance to simply make 98% of their players happier and leave the other 2% that has already done it, to simple live with it.

My guess is that it is possible but it would increase the patch size a lot because you would need to make two “maps” instead of using the same one for both modes.

To make up for this, and to cater to these players in the future, I think the gem store should offer Limited Edition Fedoras. Only 1,000 of each model will be sold. Get yours before it’s cool!!

We all take our sides, and we all want things to go our way, but even so… all these complaints are just completely unfair to Josh.

He’s extremely passionate about his creation, and the incessant whining from both camps (“Too hard!” vs. “Too easy!”) has to be beyond draining for him. Surely people must know what it’s like to create something you think is really neat and awesome, only to have it be met with waves of dissatisfaction and demands for change. He has demonstrated a profound ability to take it all in stride, thus far, but even so, it has to be tough for him.

While much of the criticism may be useful, the attitude a lot of people have with their complaints is just frustrating. Josh has his own vision here, and I think it’s both absurdly selfish and completely unfair for people to say “it has to be easier,” or “this is such a failure compared to original SAB,” or “what a blatant cash-grab,” or “stop ruining the integrity of SAB by catering to casuals,” or whatever other judgmental absolutes they’re coming up with.

It’s obvious that most of the people here love the concept of SAB, so why do we constantly have to complain about its flaws instead of cherishing the positive? All of us are going to have different problems with it, but if we all like the idea of it as a whole, can’t we just be a little nicer and more accepting of what it is? Take the good with the bad? I mean, I’d love to see the difficulty (even in normal mode) maintained and ramped up even further, but I understand that’s a minority viewpoint and unfair for the people who can’t handle said difficulty. I still love SAB and what it represents, so why do I need to rudely make demands for something better?

It’s a passionate project from an amazing developer. Don’t blunt that passion by complaining every time Josh makes a change that you are not happy with or does something that fails to appeal to your specific fantasy and desire.

Most of the people posting seem to forget that 2-3 is still the equalizer in whether you get a skin or not. 2-1 and 2-2 were a joke before and still are now. They secretly added a stealth nerf to 2-3 which makes it slightly (not going to say hard) more annoying.

That still wouldn’t make every side happy, though. There are people who liked the old difficulty for normal mode, as well. Understand that TM and normal mode are inherently different in terms of playstyle and difficulty. Some people enjoy the ‘traditional’ difficulty presented by normal mode more than what TM offers. Now they’re sad because normal mode is easier, regardless of how TM was changed.

And that’s my point. Everyone is always going to have something they want changed so that SAB better fits their personal fantasy… but instead of demanding such changes, can’t we just accept that SAB is never going to be a perfect representation of every individual player’s unique desires? There’s still plenty about it that people can and do enjoy… so just cherish the positive aspects! Focus on the ways in which it does live up to and satisfy your personal desires, rather than the ways in which it doesn’t.

That’s probably not worth the hassle to implement though. I was upset at first that I didn’t get to try W2-2 and W2-3 TM in “mint” condition, but now that the initial kneejerk reaction has passed, I realize I will still enjoy the hell out of doing those zones. I apologize for making a couple complaining posts and hope Josh doesn’t let all the whining get to him. SAB is and will continue to be one of the best things this game has to offer.

You guys are seriously making a mountain out of a mole hill.

*Edit

Also, gaining lives is difficult or time consuming now in comparison to the last SAB considering the changes to bauble acquisition (even with the changes to monster in this update).

The point I’m getting is that people who will want to complete will complete it and those who won’t, won’t. The unlimited continue coin is a huge deterrent and I’m sure that this update would do little (if anything) to change the numbers.

WTF is a “Casual” anyhow? I take it as someone who plays maybe 4 hours a week, has no time for lengthy achievements, and plays for an hour to just relax and not expect any skill to be involved because they have none in video games. They don’t do dungeons, events, or much else. Is that it? Because based on the forums – that’s the opinion I’ve gotten.

… and I’ve met all of four players like that. The rest seem to fall into Average or Hardcore.

But its exactly the high jumps, race spots, etc that make SAB trib challenging. Traps, pitfalls, etc only test your memory.

While I personally couldn’t care less what happens to SAB now that I’ve finished tribulation, here is why people say they don’t like this new update, OP:

They changed a part of it that demanded a certain aptitude at jumping and timing (namely, the watersprouts) instead of changing idiotic things such as instant, no-warning spike traps and similar traps that have no signs or warnings.

That really is all they’re annoyed about, you can’t really blame someone for wanting a legitimate difficulty amongst this sea of cheap deaths that is tribulation, and then not expect them to whine when Anet changes one of the very few actual skill-demanding part of tribulation, and leave the rest of the cheap deaths untouched.

The spike traps you can learn about and plan to avoid. This makes them cheap the first time, but possible as long as you remember to account for them. The waterspouts however, sometimes worked, sometimes didn’t, and it was nothing down to player skills. It was completely dependent on whether the engine and latency combined to decide to punish you. That’s not something that skill can overcome. It’s luck.

of course if more elitists can be driven out the game then overall it’ll be better for everybody.

It’s luck.

Not true, you have to die to the trap to know it’s there, there is no possible way to otherwise know it’s there.
I understand the idea behind the change to the watersprout: for people who play the game while always lagging, I simply don’t agree with the way it was handled, they could have increased the timers, instead of outright removing it, but I don’t really care about the change in the first place.

What’s laughable is how tacked on this whole update was, what with the checkpoints spawning you directly on spikes, it feels about as polished as the idea of tribulation’s “difficulty”.

What exactly are people complaining about for TM? I have seen 0 changes other than a couple new checkpoints (some of which don’t even work because of traps right next to them), and some toned down jumps.

You know what happens when ArenaNet releases content that only a small percentage of people can achieve? Well, the other percentage, aka the majority, gets mad or frustrated. And what happens if it happens too often? They leave.

This isn’t a small confidential game. This is a Triple-A game. They want (need) a lot of players. They already kitten ed us off not too long ago with that freaking arena. I don’t think it’s in their best interest to make something that hard so soon.

Right, but once you know it’s there, if it kills you again, it’s your fault. It’s exactly like the games its trying to emulate. Like some of the Mario hacks. You go to make a jump, then hit your head on an invisible block and die. Now you know it’s there, and you avoid it next time. IWTBTG, something comes out of nowhere and kills you, next time, you avoid that something. All memorization and learning the levels, not fighting against the controls and randomness of the game.

I’m sure there will be a few more tweaks to the balance, and when SAB goes on hiatus again, maybe they will come up with a way to get waterspouts to work as originally intended, but there was probably no way to do it well and test it completely on short notice, hence why they were simply removed for now.

I completely respect your view but for SAB I disagree. It’s a small, almost experiment inside the game. An 8bit oasis that doesn’t appeal to me but does to some. Should 90% of the players get upset when another fractals dungeon get released? Or another map for PvP? I personally have no problem with a release of a new SAB zone with TM added for those who are masochists.

I’ve seen you posting your hate of the latest SAB update for a few hours now, Applehack, and I have to say, every one of the posts I’ve seen you form has been negative in one way or another.

Do you have any positive feedback you could contribute to the development team, or are you only capable of telling them how much they’ve “failed” and expressing your extreme disappointment in them?

Do you even like Guild Wars?

Why play if you are this dissatisfied?

How nice for you that you completed Tribulation Mode in World 2 and got your yellow skins by being such a badkitty. How great for you. Please, by all means, show us your screenshots of your characters and how awesome they are with their new skins so we can boost your ego even more, because it’s well-earned and well-deserved.

Nevermind, forget all that. Please troll more.
