Sometimes when I enter Super Adventure Box I start holding a Continue Coin to give to Moto, other times I have to get one from the vending machine.

Every time I’ve entered solo so I know it’s not that someone else gets it.

Does anyone know why this happens?

It’s a “Super Coin”, not a continue coin. I’m not really sure what its purpose is, but basically if you’re holding one at the start, it means last time you left the instance manually, without a game over, and your life/health will be restored to the previous amount.

Which doesn’t really make sense to me since you get free lives anyway after a game over. I’m guessing though that they might have changed the SAB entry rules to make it more accessible than originally planned. Possibly they used to require a Continue Coin to play at all, then this system would make more sense.

It seems as if it is based on whether or not you had any lives when you left last. If you had lives you start with a coin. If you had no lives you have to pick up a coin which grants you 5 lives.

That makes sense actually. I remember being confused once when I started with 2 lives instead of 5. I can’t remember now if I had a Super Coin on that go but it would make sense.

Yeah I’ve noticed that I always start with a coin if I had lived left when I left the instance previously. If I used up my lives, then I had to grab another coin, but then got 5 lives. So it might make sense to use up all your lives when you leave so that you get the starting 5 max the next time you enter. Unless there is some drawback I’m not thinking of.

The actual answer is that this is designed to account for people who crashed out of the game. It allows them to potentially continue from where they left off without having to actually start over from the beginning, at least if they have a group.
