The Mystery of Beedogs
Pretty sure it’s #2. The fact that the Queen Bee Dog shoots bees at you when she barks is a dead giveaway. :P
The part with the queen spitting bees at you when she barks may have been a result of somebody remembering that Simpsons episode, though I have my doubts that it is the reason “beedogs” were a thing in the first place. I mean, if you read the caption under that Facebook pic in #3, it says they “just so happened to have a bee costume for her.” So, they already had the pug (and the beedogs in S.A.B. are pugs, right?), and possibly already had the bee costume. I have a hard time believing that those factors were purely coincidence, and that #2 was a sole inspiration for the beedogs.
It could easily be all 3, and maybe more we haven’t thought of yet.
Although I agree that the queen beedog shooting bees is probably a Simpsons reference.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
So, I’ve been curious about where the inspiration for the beedog enemies in Super Adventure Box came from. The way I see it, there are three main possibilities that I know of:
1) When I first saw them, I immediately thought they must be a reference Geraldo Beedog from The Journalism Show. It’s made by Topher Cantler, who has been affiliated with gaming sites like Destructoid, so maybe one of the devs happened to know about him and this is a nice nod?

This is what I found when I did a Google search for “beedogs.” Why does this exist? This frightens me.

Anybody got any more information on beedogs?
When I got to ArenaNet, there was a guild that a number of my friends at the company were representing named “Cats Cats Cats Cats [Cats].”
I decided to start an Anti-Cats guild with the tag [Dogs] and I remembered a website from the Golden Age of the internet, beedogs . com. So I made the guild Beedogs Dawt Com to semi-troll my friends. When the novelty began to wear off, I decided to take the joke to its logical, hyperbolic conclusion, and just began to talk about beedogs pretty much non-stop. When I joined the SAB team, they asked for a suggestion for accessorizing their animals, so I naturally suggested that they take their bees and turn them into dogs DRESSED like bees. Jeff Weber, one of our prop artists, obliged, and thus the beedog was born.
I would like to say that, of this list, number 3 most accurately represents the origin story of the beedog, but the Queen Beedog is a reference to the Simpsons.
Also, there is nothing sinister about beedogs . com. It’s a wonderful site dedicated to helping shelter dogs find loving homes, and I deeply respect that. If you are planning on getting a dog, please consider adopting.
Have a Super Adventure Day!

Strangely enough, this sounds like what I would do in such a situation. :-P

I love you.
Now explain the break dancing/moonwalking spiders with sun glasses…
Yes Yes. Please do. I’ll kite around them just to see the animation.
Now explain the break dancing/moonwalking spiders with sun glasses…
The answer to this seems quite simple to me:
Why wouldn’t you make breakdancing/moonwalking spiders with sunglasses?
If anyone used to use AOL back in the the old days, that simpsons quote was a very popular .wav used on windows sounds from what I remember. Going to friends houses that watched Simpsons had a 50/50 chance that they had that .wav.

The typical process for creating our monsters was:
1. Come up classic platform monster mechanics.
2. Come up with classic platform/adventure creatures.
3. Pick ones that go with the environment. (Or that don’t… because that’s the old-school way.)
4. When it’s time to actually start building them we make a lot of jokes.
5. When Jeff starts building one he does whatever random thing occurs to him.
6. I tell him to put the eyes further apart.
7. He ignores me.
8. I come in in the morning and find the finished monster with a funny hat or other accessories.
9. Trevor takes the monster and makes it move in an appropriate way.
10. PROFIT!
^ This made my day. :-) Great sense of humor.

So… beedog minipets anyone? Surely this can happen…

I need to pay better attention.
Wait… is it the queen beedog or the underlings?
Now, I need to know who thought of having the beedog scoot on its butt? I laughed out loud the first time I saw him do that with his eyes getting all wonky and it still makes me snicker.

underlings. But gosh they’re so cute!

Jeff Weber (modeler) created our creatures and Trevor Howell (animator) brought them all to life
As you can see they did some pretty amazing things!
In my opinion the queen beedog looks like Goofy wearing a bee costume. xD
