While I agree that the prestige factor is a huge force in the game economy, I do not see the logic in permanently removing the current SAB skins.

If i see a shiny prestige item that I like, only to learn there is 100% no way to get it, I will have no inclination to do anything as an economic actor. There has to actually be a chance, no matter how slim, that I can get a prestige item for it to motivate me to spend money or time and otherwise participate in the economy.

Legendaries are a good example. I will probably never get one, but since it is technically possible, I assign worth to all the items/tokens/recipes/farming methods that go into making one. This creates value, and value creates an economy.

Hello, there are tradeable versions of the skins that drop from chests, and they will always be in the economy. Even the most limited items from GW1 are still in the economy.

But they WILL still be limited. If you wanted the GS skin be ready to shell out 60-120g based on how many are available.

And your point? Please don’t tell me this is going to turn into an argument that everything in the game should be cheap. I’ve always been on the poorer spectrum in RPG’s, and I disagree with that.

The person I quoted made the claim that legendaries would be more achievable than SAB skins. That’s not going to happen for a very long time.

I missed the Karka and Halloween events, but I’m not complaining. If GW2 didn’t have rare, retired items, I wouldn’t play. Simple as that.

Anyone complaining is just a typical, entitled, nu-gamer that want’s everything handed to them.

I like this discussion and agree with much of what has been said by Josh and others in support of keeping the skins rare.

However I do have a single request Josh and it is a rather large one. When are you going to bloody give me a system to store my bloody skins already like in PvP? I mean there are several ways you could do it!

1: Increase the bank tabs in the game one can purchase so that we have more storage space for our unique items. This would go hand in hand with a collectible tab storage increase so you can store 1k dungeon tokens etc.

2: Add in a system like buying extra bag slots except for skins. Start out a weapon with three vacant skin slots or even five that can be slotted with a skin that can be switched to at any time. Then put in the option to buy several more slots for that single weapon so one can rotate skins they love on a single stat type weapon.

You can even take it a step further by adding an item in the game that can remove a skin from a weapon to use on another. This could be a very low priced gem store item and one that drops in the world a little bit more often then say keys.

3: A PvE storage closet just like with PvP. Let me store the skins in a PvE closet so they are not taking up my bank space and can be used at a later date. This can even be boosted by using it in conjunction with the number 2 on the list system. Encouraging players to try to get skins from all across the world so they can be stored for use at a later date. Thus helping you keep players playing the game more often.

4: Not dealing with storage but you could boost this system even further by making it so that when in my home instance there is a mannequin that fits my race in my home area in the game. One where I can swap between the skins I have for armor and weapons. See what they’d look like in front of me but also have another function. I could save set looks on these to be used later. So all I’d have to do is visit and all my gear would be swapped to X look. That or they could just be something for me to show off to others when I invite them into my home instance as you improve upon it.

I mean for a game that is supposed to promote customization the current systems in the game feel like a vice. They squeeze me hard and limit my options. They penalize me for wanting to collect different looks that I can show off to others and have fun with.

I’m sick of people complaining about “limited time only” things existing. That’s what life is. You miss opportunities, people will have things you do not. If everybody had exactly the same thing, there would be no value in having anything. I want to be who I am and have my real life and my life in the game shaped by what I experience in life. I lost a chance to invest in Apple before it became huge. You missed the opening round of SAB. Things happen, life moves on, and then other things happen.

Or, you know, it’s a game and not “life”…

Games are meant for entertainment. There are suppose to be goals and challenges, things to work towards and accomplish.

The idea that logging in at a specified time while completing a trivial task is something to be rewarded is an idea that I completely do not understand. Imo, it causes more players to be ‘turned off’ than the players who get their ‘ego stroked’ from it. (with probably the majority of people in the middle feeling indifferent)

A wise businessman or woman knows that 1 happy customer will never balance out against 1 unhappy customer.

I, for one, want to be able to play the game on my time table and not be ‘punished’ by missing out on a reward I fancy just because real life got in the way. I think it’s safe to assume no sane gamer finds that fun.

Keep in mind this is coming from someone who’s been at all the one time events and has gotten, more or less, everything that matters to me. So my opinion is not coming from being ‘bum hurt’ or missing out.

If Anet wants to keep to this silly policy, that’s their right and their choice. Likewise, as paid/paying customers, it’s our right and choice to complain about policies we feel are down right unneeded.

In my opinion, this is what single player games are for, unless you don’t mind missing out on certain things in MMOs. Part of the fun of an MMO (especially a franchise as visually driven as GW) is that everyone is different and can basically make themselves look however they want with what they have acquired and accomplished. I love the GW franchise special events on holidays and other times of the year. It makes me feel like ANet is an active influence in my gaming experience.

Sure, everyone can still look different while having all the same items, but part of what makes people admire something is the prestige, which was discussed earlier. One person might have a “prestigious” item from one event and someone else may have one from a different event and years down the road everyone will have different items but plenty to work with to (hopefully) satisfy them.

I don’t have everything I want in the game yet. I don’t expect that I will acquire everything from every event, but if I really want something I’ll do my best to get it. I’m satisfied with the current philosophy, but if I ever stop enjoying the game for whatever reason, I’ll just do something else. That’s life.

You have a very personalized opinion of single player and mmo which is not accurate for what they actually are.

In single player games, these “prestige” (I use that term under duress) items exists in forms of pre order bonuses, store incentives, event codes and limited time demo unlocks etc.

Seldorin, it’s nice that you think you are entitled to everything just because it’s a “game” and created for entertainment. However games of all types have always had exclusive content. Holiday events, limited time purchases, one-time releases of content, and retired content are parts of most games. It adds an extra dimension to the game that incentivises people to play more. It makes people feel a extra sense of achievement for having those things. Half of your entertainment comes from not the content itself, but the way in which is it delivered. I’ve played with people who use guides for everything, and they completely miss the discovery aspect of the game, and enjoy it less because of that. It’s like receiving a present. Which do you enjoy more: getting a special gift and unwrapping it, or being able to command any gift at thought? I’m not talking about the actual physical gain, but the emotional gain here. And even if you consider the physical gain, nothing in the game is actually real, so the emotional enjoyment is all you have to go on.

Hope that clarifies some things.

Also this is a role-playing game, which by definition is meant to imitate a life.

The person I quoted made the claim that legendaries would be more achievable than SAB skins. That’s not going to happen for a very long time.

Perhaps the point is that if the skins from the initial release of SAB will never be available again, that eventually the tradeable versions will all have been used, and with no means to acquire them after the next 48 hours that they will quickly become the rarest skins in the game?

Technically speaking then, within 48 hours or so SAB skins will instantly become more rare than Legendaries precisely because they will arbitrarily become unobtainable.

Which is stupid. Why would ANet intentionally introduce skin rarity in the game? People get the SAB skins because they like them, not because of a power thing. Why should noobies a year from now be excluded from ever obtaining them? So that older players can stroke their kittens?

Really, SAB is a cute mini game, with a means to accrue a few interesting and funny weapon skins. There is no logical reason to ever remove it from the game, as its not part of any lore issue.

Plus, with ANet’s stated intent of “anti-grind” (which they fail miserably at, but still) introducing cool new skins, a very grindy way of acquiring them, and then a limited time in which to do so is just a trifecta of poor decision making.

I wouldn’t use the buzzword “entitled”. It’s a cheap way to insult and diminish an opposing opinion without actually addressing the situation. Aka, it’s argumentum ad hominem. It’d be the same as if I called you ‘toxic’ for calling him ‘entitled’.

Let’s not be ‘that’ kind of community. ^_^b

What?

Role-play means to imitate a role, not a life. A role can be realistic or not. Therefore, the game may, or may not, imitate real life.

Thank you for telling me you didn’t even read my post. It saves me having to bother arguing with you.

@Xirin: I had feeling someone was gonna dictionary-fight me on that one. A role…in life. We have food, professions, a personal ‘life’ story, living world, even homes eventually in the game. You really don’t have to look far to see how MMORPG’s emulate a fantasy life.

And to the other person that wants to quote-war me: that’s how it works, GW1 had limited edition releases, GW2 has already had the Halloween skins which were MUCH harder to get. It’s going to keep on being that way. Exclusive content is fun. It makes your experience of the game unique to what you have played.

People complain about things constantly, and I try and clear the air and explain to them how and why things work, in hope that they would not be so dissatisfied with whatever it is. In the end, you all get offended and attack me instead of trying to see the other side. So guess what, you guys can just go on complaining and I’m not going to give a kitten, and let you be miserable, since I don’t see any benefit in trying to help you anymore.

If there’s no way to get the old skins. They’re price will jump dramatically in the following years. Even buying a skin through TP now will still give you a lot of profit.
However buying them now is sorta like a gamble.

It’s sad that certain items are not achievable after a certain amount of time.

As a disclaimer, yes, this response is not related to the future of SAB as much as it is related to the future of exclusive content in general.

That said, we should probably stop comparing GW2 to GW1, especially in regard to the Halloween skins. You say “exclusive content is fun,” and I would generally agree, except when the exclusive content is exclusive to Black Lion Chests (or other RNG-based chests acquired via the gem store). In that case, it does NOT make your experience of the game unique to what you have played; it only makes your experience of the game unique to the size of your real-life pocketbook and your stomach for gambling. Mind you, I’m okay with paying for content (I’ve been lured into spending about $200 on LoL, which I don’t even play); it’s the combination of real money with gambling that offends. All comparisons to GW1 inevitably have to go out the door.

Provide exclusive content acquired from achieving certain in-game goals, and provide exclusive content acquired from spending real-life currency, but let’s leave the gambling behind, please.
