Q:

I’m just curious about this.
I’ve spent a lot of time in the SAB since it came out. Not much time in the PvE or PvP world.

I don’t understand why it costs money to get a skin with the baubles. I understand that one gold is not really much, and wont be hard for many players to get, but in the past events like this never required you to spend gold with your tokens (IE, the socks from the presents), even though you get money for doing those dungeons (IE the winter event, you got a chest at the end that gave you items to sell).

In SAB, you don’t get any items other than the baubles and a rare chance at a skin you can sell on the TP (which I have not gotten yet).

So why does it cost gold? You are not guaranteed any type of money when you do the dungeon, so why would the reward for doing these dungeons cost gold?!

Please don’t use the fact that the skins cost a nice bit a gold and you can sell them on the TP as an excuse, because those are not guaranteed, and you can go this whole month without getting a single one if your luck is bad. Then there is a chance at getting a more expensive skin like the greatsword. Otherwise, later on, you’ll only be able to get 1-3 gold (assuming that the prices keep going down).

Well, you can sell the skin for more than one gold if you wish, so probably to lessen gold farming.

I understand that (as I stated in my question), but the skins are not a guaranteed drop, its a chance drop.

In the winter event, you could get items out of the end chest that sold for more than 1 gold too, but the winter skins didn’t cost any gold, just the socks you would get out of the present boxes.

Yah, I’m not fond of the fact that skins require gold as well as baubles either, not at all. You can’t sell the skins you buy with baubles on the TP (only the random drops are sellable, the bought ones are account-bound), so your only possible source of gaining money from the Box is a low-chance drop. I haven’t gotten one, and the number I’ve seen thrown around is 5% chance of skin drop.

So in all likelyhood, by doing the SAB to acquire baubles, you’re losing “potential money” you could be making by doing something else. If I run SAB for an hour, thats an hour I could have spent running a couple dungeons and making a few gold, and I’ve instead made nothing. Not to mention that you also get no experience, no daily progress (except dodger, though I’d like to see SAB give progress to other dailys as well), no karma, ect. And then on top of that you also need to spend money to get the skins.

Now, I’m perfectly willing to lose the money I could be making by playing SAB instead, don’t get me wrong. The SAB itself is great fun (best event / activity thats been added to the game IMO) and the skins are very nice. But the fact that I need to spend money on top of that just rubs me the wrong way. Feels like a bit of a kick while I’m down. I’m already dying for money as it is (having 5 characters who only recently reached level 80 and needing to equip all of them will do that). Now I’m spending a good deal of time I could be using to get money running SAB for fun and baubles instead, and yet despite all that I’m also going to have to spend the few gold I have in the bank to grab the skins I want.

I also don’t like what it does to lower level players especially. 1g may be a drop in the hat for a level 80 character, but if someone happened to be new and only had a level 15 character, thats quite a different story. SAB is great in the fact that it allows ANYONE to do it, and be 100% equal with anyone else regardless of level. But then the sought-after rewards from it require a money investment which is quite a bit for a low level player. The fact that they’re losing potential experience also hurts them more, so even moreso it really hurts lower level players.

Gems don’t destroy Gold. When you buy Gems with Gold, that Gold is going to another player Selling the Gems. There is the transaction fee that destroys a lot of gold but its only 15%, but that applies to all over the TP.

Why should they have to buy gold with real money just to enjoy the content that is otherwise free? Just because they are a new player? Yeah, no.

no one said they have to. it’s the quickest way.

also if you think you should get everything for free your wrong.

people work hard on this stuff and I bet they put a lot of free time into this(time they do t get payed for). I do the same at work to make my customers happy.

I see, I just think its out of place. They could have come up with a better place for a gold sink.

And what would that better place be? Skins are optional, yet wanted by many. That is pretty much the perfect gold sink place.

If someone is low level and can’t afford it (pretty much bullkitten as money isn’t that hard to come by at low levels thanks to zone completions, dailies and monthlies) then they can’t afford it. Skins are optional cosmetic items. They aren’t a necessity that you must have.

Economically, for a Buy 2 Play game it makes sense. Create a gold sink and remove the players from areas where they would be making gold.

You stop farming gold or ways to get gold long enough to get baubles for the skins. I have no problem with this, I don’t have tons of money, but I am spending time there, and spending money to get all the skins.

I personally liked the GW1 event system – pretty much all of them awarded a hat for free just for attending and it gave even the lowbies something to have so they could parade around with it for the rest of the year. Especially with the town clothes, it would be pretty cool to have event hats and clothes that are free or well within the price range of a new player.

Obvious answer you’ll all hate:

Skins cost gold because Moto is using the skins to raise funds for further development.

It’d be pretty silly if he did all that talk about funding further development and never actually collected any money.

I understand that (as I stated in my question), but the skins are not a guaranteed drop, its a chance drop.

In the winter event, you could get items out of the end chest that sold for more than 1 gold too, but the winter skins didn’t cost any gold, just the socks you would get out of the present boxes.

In the XMas event the skins were either all chance from the gifts or you could trade in larger amounts of the farm able drops for a skin (as opposed to buying more boxes).

In this event the BB’s are a static farm instead of a random drop (though you can still get a 2% chance of getting a non account bound skin in a chest). Since they take the randomness out of this, I think that is why they added a coin requirement to the trades. It might not be the most satisfactory answer, but I think it was intentionally made for a reason along that line.
