Easy way to get "Personal Space"
So, basically exploit the game?
Krall Peterson – Warrior
Piken Square
Is this what the game has come to? Nobody wants to work towards achievements as they are intended to be earned?
And thank you for telling us all here about this exploit so ANet can promptly patch this up!
Knowledge of this has been out for closing to a week. They may fix it by not allowing relogged chars the option to enter the boss fight. Or they may leave it because of all the distress they caused the first few days of this even due to poor dissemination of information on how the achievement actually works. We shall see. Event will be coming to an end soon enough.

yeah, because “earning” those achievements works as intended…

Pretty much this.
Relogging at least pretty much guarantees you get it, to avoid all the bugs.

My exploit senses are tingling!
…..I better stay away from this so anet doesn’t get any exercise with their Banhammer!
Funny thing is, a GM responded to one of my tickets telling me that this was one of the methods to obtain this. Literally told me to log out and relog to avoid the cannons.

If a GM actually said this then I completely take back what I said (mind posting their response?)
For the record, last night I got through ‘Faster Than Light’ unscathed but wasn’t awarded the achievement. Yes I was peeved but the thought never cross my mind to ‘trick’ the system into giving it to me (i.e. with the logout method).
However if GMs are telling folks it’s ok to do this then that’s another matter entirely.

Hello (name redacted),
Thank you for contacting the Guild Wars 2 Support Team.
I’m really sorry for our previous response about the Personal Space achievement. You can obtain this achievement by avoiding all the AOE attacks from First Mate Horrik during the barrage. AOEs from other cannons won’t count against the achievement, neither will his attacks while he is on the ground. As a player, I suggest you to regroup with your party and stay together while running around the arena during the barrage. Horrik’s attacks target players, so if you are together with your party the attacks will focus on you and they will be easier to avoid as a group (they will target a specific spot and you can all run one direction).
As another option, if you are not hosting the instance you can start the final fight with your party and when the AOE starts logg out. The remaining four party members will need to defeat Mai Trin and First Mate Horrik, then you will need to get back to the instance to acquire the achievement.
I hope this information was useful to you. If you have any other issues or concerns, please let us know.
Kind regards,
GM Wicho

The GM here is describing a method whereby you get the achievement by still not taking any AOE damage as you are not participating in the fight once the AOE phase starts. (Actually I’d have thought this would be an ‘exploity’ way to get it, but now that a GM said it’s ok this is definitely good info to know!)
However, the OPs method apparently guarantees getting the achievement regardless of whether or not you took AOE damage.
So I guess I’d still be careful as imho what the op describes and what the GM told you are not quite the same thing.

The details are irrelevant IMO. The gm is still giving you a gimmicky way to get it. Same concept just a different order of events. /shrug still stupid that this ACH got so out of hand that this is what GMs are responding to bug reports with.
Mind blown on that GM response. Really.
Why stop there? Any guild could just kill Mai, sub out 4 teammates, invite 4 anons (for modest gold fee of course), finish off Horrik for completion. Profit.

I realise this is an exploit however there are most likely people out there that achieved one of these or even both due to dumb luck. What I mean is a person can disconnect during the boss battle and then return to the fight right before its over and get the achievement unintentionally due to it.
Plus can any of us prove we earned it legitimately? No even if we do it without exploits it is only for our personal satisfaction. Unless we record the whole thing we cant prove anything.
You should not make such a big deal out of it. For example I am one of the few that achieved in GW1 the Legendary Defender of Ascalon title through death leveling. I took me over 2 months to get it and then in 2011 Vanguard quests were introduced and all my hard work became worthless. Do you have any idea how I felt back then?
Not to mention death leveling was considered an exploit too.
This however is just an achievement which we dont even need and a lot of people wont get it anyway because some will miss the event and some will start playing when its long over. Also many claim it to be bugged which I am ready to believe because when I did the dungeon for the first time I got several achievements for kills which showed me weird numbers. Like one of them said I killed 30/25 aetherblades.
Event will be coming to an end soon enough.
And nothing of value will be lost.
Well I am hoping that ANET learns something from this achievement and doesn’t make the same mistakes in the future. Also don’t take this as me complaining about the dungeon, I personally enjoyed the heck out of this one. But this achievement was simply put, poorly implemented. From the extremely misleading description to the more luck based RNG way of acquiring it, it’s just not done in a good way.
And btw before someone says that I am just wanting achievements handed to me, you couldnt be more wrong, I was a massive Achievement kitten back in WoW anpd spent countless hours sometimes trying to get Hard mode ones, but those I could actively make an effort toward them. But this one was just to RNG and buggy.
Screen shot removed. Some people complain about things they have no knowledge about.

Your lucky you got a response. I put a detailed ticket and got completely ignored.
Abbout 5 minutes ago i was in AR and guess what, cannons hit me whine NOT standing in circle, and this happenned not once, but 10 times durring the fight, i really want that achievement and try REALLY hard to get it but EVERY SINGLE TIME i got hit by invisible circle. kitten ET

Lol I got like 3-4 reply’s back in less then 12 hours regarding this issue, so I dunno.
But yea, this isnt the type of response I was hoping to get, it just shows that they knew there was something wrong with it.
This method is definitely an exploit, but it’s still something to consider for people who are utterly frustrated with the achievement, or who should have gotten it legally but for whatever reason they didn’t due to a bug (or they avoided Horrik’s attacks, only for the party to mess up and die at Mai/Horrik’s final phase. In that case, I would consider the player to have earned the achievement rightfully).
This achievement is mostly based on luck anyway. If you just happened to be the unlucky one when you got trapped in a zone with no way out AND Horrik was the one targeting you, no achievement. Whereas someone else could be a horrible dodger, get downed in the first phase against Mai/Horrik, stayed dead throughout the entire fight because nobody had a chance to res him, and then he gets the achievement at the end through no effort of his own.
I’d love to have an official response in this thread regarding the log out method of obtaining this achievement.
This is how most people is going to get it unless it gets fixed.
But then, if it gets fixed, what about those who already did it this way?
If they reset the achievement, it’ll be unfair for those who got it legitimately.
If they do not, it’ll be unfair for those who could not get it legitimately, when others got it by exploiting.
Solution?
There’s only two possible ones:
A. Make the dungeon way easier so more people can get them.
It can be made harder later as a fractal.
B. Take out the achievements and save them for later.
1. Remove the achievements altogether. Everyone loses them regardless of how hey go it.
2. Bring back the dungeon as a fractal later.
3 Put the achievements back with the fractal, fixed so people can’t get them cheating.
How to fix them?
Well, for example, put on people an effect at the start of both boss battles. If they get hit by the beams or Horrik’s barrage, they lose the effect, ad with it the achievement.
If they leave the dungeon, they lose the effect. So you’ll have to be at the start and get to the end with the effect.
As things are now, the dungeon is a source of frustration and disgruntlement between players.
I like things fun and fair.
I disagree about removing them because they’re too difficult. If your group plays smart then you do not need to resort to logging out to get the achievement.
Thanks for the tip. Done this so many times, and someone always runs too close to me and messes up the pattern I’ve made.
If people don’t get it this way, then some are just going to use thieves and 1 person kiting… so which do you prefer people doing for a public event that’s supposed to be fun? “You’re not a thief GET OUT”

There are rumors that crossing the bridge while you’re fighting only Horrik at the end will also reset the counter. But I don’t know if this is true and if yes if just the teleporting causes this behavior or because you are out of the fight (if this happens).
All you need to do is run across the Asura platforms to the ship when Horrik is alone. When you try to get the ship it will port you back to the entrance of the fight and count toward the achievement. My friend tested it out and it does work.

Yep, it works. Just did it this way
I just tried this and I didn’t work. Everybody was fighting Horrik after Mai died and I ran across and it teleported me back. Twice. Did I do something wrong?
You have to avoid horrik’s cannon blasts when it’s him alone too (after running across the bridge.) Then you’re golden for the achievement. Thanks!

I avoided all of his attacks after I crossed the bridge just to be sure and I got it, you can try that
An “easy” way to get the achievement for 4 out of 5 party members is to have 2 thieves, one with Pistol off-hand and one with Shortbow. Decide who is going to be the person that’ll be the target of the barrages and (most likely) forfeit their chance at the achievement for that round. This person would ideally have the achievement already though.
When Mai calls out for the barrages, the other 4 players runs to one side of the arena and the thieves take care of stealthing everyone (Shadow Refuge (both) + Cluster Bomb (Shortbow Thief), Blinding Powder (both), Black Powder (Pistol off-hand Thief) + Cluster Bomb (Shortbow Thief)) through the entire phase. The person that was decided upon for being a target, sticks to the opposite half of the arena, avoiding getting too close to the rest of the team.
Rinse repeat every 25% of Mai’s health, and you will pretty easily get 4 of the 5 players in your group the achievement. Note however, that you can’t stealth up the entire group, or Mai will just reset, so this is why you need one brave soul that is good enough to stay alive and avoid the majority of the barrages. It helps if you have, e.g., a Guardian and/or Elementalist in the group as well, since they make for decent healers for the player running around taking the hits.
Remember to lower Horrik’s health to about 5-10% on the last 25% of Mai’s health, so you can finish him off quickly once she is defeated. Also, it helps if you decide where the 4 players will be and where the barrage target will be ahead of time, so that when Mai is about to call for the barrages, you can try keep the 4 that should be stealthed near their side of the arena, and the barrage target on the other side. Barrages occur at 75%, 50% and 25%. You got to be quick on stealthing up, to avoid any barrages getting shot in your direction instead of the barrage target.
Tip: For the 4 that should be stealthed, if you have a Commander in the group, have them turn the tag on so you can play “follow the Commander” for better co-ordination. Alternatively you could call target on a designated “Commander”.

Hmm, might have to try to find a group to do it this way. I can’t get the laser one (kitten pulls), this one, or the unfriendly skies. Might be the first LS where I can’t get all the achievements, which irks me.
