So, I updated with the most recent bugfix patch, the notes to which include the following:

“Karka spawn will no longer aggressively harass players trying to enter Canach’s Lair. "

Yet when I attempted to get to Canach’s Lair, the entire tunnel, including the space where the dungeon NPCs are, was flooded with aggressive Young Karka and Karka Hatchlings that were respawning as fast as they were killed.

There is an event in that cave with the demolitionist that will spawn karka. With so many players akitteng in the event area, the karka will get uplevelled and their spawn rates will increase.
