Something interesting caught my eye, so to quote:
“Four settlements (Point Pride, Kiel’s Outpost, Steampipe Steading, and Camp Karka) are integral parts of trade on the island. If all four camps are held by the players, a special merchant will appear on Pearl Islet to exchange armor for karka shells.”

Am i crazy or does this mean we get a new set of armor?
I dont recall any note of this before.

“And finally, there is a new merchant who will appear at Pearl Islet as a part of the map-wide Karka Queen event that starts on June 4. Visit this merchant to purchase two new potions as well as some special weapons and armor.”

Holy crud, could this actually be a new set of armor?!

Lol I hope so, or maybe some scerlite armour to match the weapons. Think I may be straying into fantasy land though.

Well, since the merchant isn’t there yet and we haven’t heard anything to back that up, there’s no use making speculative assertions. No bubbles to burst yet.

I think it would make sense to have LS themed gear, done in the same fashion of tokens-to-gear like the SAB. Putting in regular stuff wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense considering the effort it will take to make the merchant available. Having to gain control of all the areas takes some effort and organization. Doing that to make the merchant pop and then to find out his offerings are what you suggest would be a real let down to say the least. I certainly wouldn’t participate to access a gear merchant with Healing+Toughness+Cond stats :/

But you know, you could be right. It seems that their preferred choice is to gate the new skins behind RNG crates/boxes.

As ive quoted in the above, it seems the currency will be Karka Shells.
I bought 300 just to be safe while they are cheap.

Yes, you’ll participate…lots of people will participate. When the merchant pops, there’s also a World Boss that spawns that gives a daily bonus chest of 2 guaranteed rares. People will be causing the merchant to spawn along the way towards getting the boss to spawn.

This setup is very similar to the Orr temple events, except the merchant happens before the boss.

I’ve seen and done all there is (for me) to do. I don’t need to join a frantic zerg for the last couple days of this event to cap it off.

For me, overall, the Southsun chapter of this Living Story left a lot to be desired. I’m quite disappointed that such a large percentage of the rewards were single (a rare chance through a direct Cash Shop purchase) and double (rare drop crate then rare drop chance again) gated behind RNG. I disagree with the path ANET has chosen in that regard, and I feel the event itself was sloppily done. <— All my opinion.

I don’t feel a need to see or participate in any more of the Southsun event.

Actually that would point to it as placeholders while the definitive skin not yet in the code to avoid dat mining.

Those sets are the Yellow armors for each class, not the Orange so I don’t think we’re geting those skins on an orange set.

Rob Hrouda said weeks ago that there would be no new player-available armor skins as part of this update, so I’m not sure why any of this is a surprise.

Ummmm no, a friend of mine was posting the code to the orange items. So they are exotic and they have the weird apothecary stats on them. Plus the same old recycled skins from forever.

You can buy back armor for 1000 shells somewhere in SW maybe they talking about that?

No new skins or not, I’m actually quite pleased by this. Depending on how many Karka Shells are needed, this merchant essentially offers what could be another (cheap) option to get Exotic tier armor. Since the Karka Queen is staying as a World Boss, it’s likely that this merchant will also be a permanent addition, allowing us to purchase Settler stat-spread equipment permanently. Anything that offers more diversity in player choices is a good thing, in my books.

Of course, if each piece requires 1000 Karka Shells, you can bet I’d be passing on the Settler equipment. :P

They already have this armor’s models for all races and gender, but currently only available in pvp… As Vahkris said, the karka queen event is similar to the Orr temple events, which spawns a vendor – that gave unique armor!

An official response from ANet would be awesome. I need to know if the new armor vendor will only have new ‘settler’ stats with recycled armor, or brand new pve armor (because I can’t wait)…

It’s a beachy vacationy location (Southsun). I was hoping for something that fit the theme. Shells. Leather (lizard skin). Skimpy-ish (hey, it’s the beach!). Maybe something similar in design to those Hylek weapons but not quite so oogly.

If we get new armour, it won’t have a new model.

The best you can hope for is some of the armour models which are PvP exclusive (like this one: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/PvP_Masquerade_armor) or were only available as personal story rewards (such as this one: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/PvP_Commando_armor).

I personally expect some variation of the apothecary stats (maybe swapping toughness with healing power like the settler trinkets). It doesn’t make much sense to add existing armour stats to the vendor when they can be easily obtained elsewhere. If it’s the tribal/shaman looking light armour skin, expect karka shells to be expensive. A lot of people have been eagerly waiting for ArenaNet to add that one to PvE.
