Link Southsun Cove to the other zones!
Tee See
There will indeed be a new asura gate linking Lion’s Arch to the new resort on Southsun Cove.
I agree that it seems possible to travel to Southsun from other areas when you’re looking at the map, but we’ve never had support for travel to other zones by swimming across the sea. In the context of the game world, I believe there are some pretty nasty things out in the deep water that would make it difficult to swim that far.
That’s all very well but you can already swim east from Pearl Islet across a relatively short channel to the mainland and end up just west of Sparkfly Fen. Then you hit an invisible wall trying to climb the bank to get off the beach.
The really annoying thing is it looks like there should be a path up the bank, you just can’t actually walk/jump/climb up it. Or I haven’t managed to yet.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
Knowing some rudimentary knowledge of Asura Gate-ology, the gate generally points the direction of where it will port to and from, usually with precise accuracy barring any strange geographical shifts caused by Elder Dragons or other supernatural forces.
In the first attached image, it leads me to believe that this gate that goes from Lion’s Arch would be somewhere along the beaches of western Lion’s Arch with a fuzzy differential of +/- 1 degree, more likely within the Consortium camp near Moran Memorial POI.
This gate may also appear near the Living Story Field Reporter golem NPC, though it would seem kind of awkward to have a gate placed in an open area instead of an edge of a certain point.
The second image shows where I was standing before calculating the general position of where the Lion’s Arch end of that gate would be.
However, there doesn’t seem to be a golem or other Asuran constructs building a gate in either location.
Humorous-case scenario, the gate could be in the Trading Post, and the area could potentially be raided by karka monsters. After all, the Consortium and the Black Lion Trading Company are direct competitors.
In the third screenshot, there probably is an inclination that the “state-of-the-art maritime rapid transit system” will be going away once the gate has been completed.
They should link the gate in LA to Southsun instead the fractals, then make a third gate in Southsun to the fractals, then move the bank and black lion trader from the boat to next to the gate.
The gate to Fractals would require some heavy recalculations, perhaps to the point that the gate would have to deconstructed and rebuilt to point in the general direction of Southsun. See forth attached image. If the gate actually transported someone to a certain spot in Tyria instead of out in the Mists, then it could mechanically be transported to somewhere around the Deldrimor Front or even into Branded territory.
Back to the original topic, a connection between Southsun and Sparkfly seems somewhat logical … but what could be hidden in this small undiscovered landmass?

Suggestion: Write “Here there be monsters” on the map, all around Southsun Cove.

If swimming is not possible, then just use boats.
There’s already two boats in the map.
Simply copy consortium boats on exising docks and on each an NPC to take you to Southsun. Then in the boats in Southsun you choose the destination bytalking to the NPC like you do now chose the waypoint from LA to Southsun.
That way you could link Southsun to places like Garenhoff, Fort Trinity, Rata Sum’s Port…
As long as it has a dock with direct access to the Sea of Sorrows, you can link it to Southsun.
This is a really good idea! Have the map surrounded/linked by water, but when you get near the edge of the map, the “current” will push you back (much like it does now). In order to get to the next map, you have to take a boat.

Love how ArenaNet works with adding new explorable areas!
I really hope they will bring back Elona or Cantha in a expansion. Palawa Joko’s control over Elona, how the Order seems to travel there often… So much story to work on there. Going on a mission with The Order of Whispers to assist the remaining Elonians from Palawa Joko.
