It’s great that we can now get exotic gear in Southsun from merchant, but why does getting exotic gear have to include grinding?

It takes 70 shells and 2 gold to get one piece of exotic gear, so only way to get those is by grinding Karka. I got my exotics in Orr, used Karma, worked my daily and monthly to accumulate it, I just enjoyed the game at my own pace, and I got exotics easily, after a nice showdown with a temple boss. Nice, simple and easy, just by playing and enjoying the game.

Instead of grinding Karka for shells, why not use some other items, that you obtain by doing events in Southsun? It’s a lot better to obtain those by doing events at your own pace, and you’ll do them one way or another, instead of forcing you to grind Karka for shells.

Killing one type of enemy and grinding materials for our gear isn’t that fun, at least for me. What about you?

Some people claim you have to grind dailies for karma to buy the Orrian exotics. And I’ve gotten 114 karma shells and 16 gold just by playing and enjoying the new content in Southsun the last few weeks.

Other people enjoy doing dungeons, and then use the tokens they get to buy gear. (Which again some people say you have to grind for.)

Why should everyone have to play the content you enjoy in order to get exotics? Why can’t we have a range of options using different currencies rewarded in different ways, so everyone can choose the one(s) they like?

Valid point, but why not add multiple options? For me grinding events for tokens or some other item isn’t that bad (since I’m going to be doing events while I’m there) instead of focusing on one type of opponent.

I had no problem with Orr, it felt rewarding especially after freeing the temple. I do dailies almost every day anywhere in the game work, I get karma from events wherever I go, so for me at least, it feels less limiting.

If somebody wants to kill 420 Veteran Karka for full exotic armor, that their choice, but I would rather complete 300 events in Kryta and give my skill points and Karma (that I get on daily basis) for full exotic armor.

My point is we’ve already got multiple options.

People who like doing dailies (and/or dynamic events) can collect karma and can spend it to get exotics.
People who like doing dungeons can collect tokens and use them.
People who like the current Living Story content or Southsun generally can collect karka shells and use them.
People who like crafting can make their own.

And I’m sure there’s others I’ve forgotten.

Adding this new option doesn’t take away any of the ones which are already there, it just gives us another way to get exotics (or alternatively another use for shells we’ve gotten as a result of doing the new content), so if your argument is that there should be options for everyone you should be in favour of it, even if it’s not an option you personally would choose.

Actually this isn’t entirely true. You can’t find that stat combination anywhere else, even if the majority of the playerbase isn’t interested in those stats. So the only way to get them is to grind karka.

  • Instigators are gone so no more shells from their chest.
  • Karka spawns on the sand islands were reduced making it a bit tougher to get shells
  • Veteran karka are a pita to solo for a guaranteed shell drop. 1 shell.
  • That magic buff is probably going to go away after the 11th I’m betting.

The solution is easy enough in that Anet can up the drop rate on shells a small amount.

I think the point being raised about the mutliple currencies that are available to use for purchasing exotics (armor or weapons) is a valid one — we have coin, karma, laurels, tokens, and that’s just naming four … i don’t see why any one of those couldn’t be used to purchase the new armor available on Southsun, since it isn’t technically new per se — it just has a new stat set.

Now don’t get me wrong — I’m not saying I think that unique armor/weapon skins should be available for purchase via any means available. The dungeon armors were designed with the mindset that only people willing to spend the time in that particular dungeon, obtaining the necessary numbers of tokens, would be able to purchase them, and that’s fine. I get that — you want the Arah armor? Do the dungeon. (Though personally, I think players could make a killing off of being able to sell dungeon tokens on the TP).

But for armors like the ones being offered on Southsun that share the same skins as others armors? Doesn’t make sense for it to require the karka shells. If it were a skin unique to Southsun, sure, I get it — shells all the way, like dungeon tokens (but then shells would prolly be account or character bound).

We’ve got all these means to accumulate different forms of wealth, so to speak … there should be multiple ways to spend them.

I agree with you mojowalker, dungeon armor looks unique, and its good if you want to show off, it gives you some sort of accomplishment after doing the dungeon over and over.

As for the “regular” looking armor, there should be other, more common ways of getting it.

Personally, I think that game is getting a bit out of hand with the currency (I don’t mind it, but it might be hard for new players to get the hang of it), but some other “depositable” item would be a lot better alternative in my opinion.

For example, this item could be earned by doing events in Kryta, so you can earn your regular looking gear anyway you want, without being forced to grind Karka in Southsun.
