Soooo Confused about all of this.....
Did you talk to all of the NPC’s? Those who blasted through the content missed a lot of the story.
You’re not forcing them into slavery. They signed contracts that obligated them to service to the Consortium, and did so of their own free will. Sure, it was maybe coorced to a degree by the Molten Alliance disaster, but no one held a sword to their head and forced them to sign. They could have declined signing the contract and walked away (in fact some of the refugees did just that, you can find some of the named refugees from the camps back in Nolan Hatchery or Cragstead).
I won’t claim that it isn’t shady and underhanded that the Consortium preyed on the refugees with underhanded contracts, but it was ultimately still the refugees themselves that signed. The Consortium hasn’t done anything illegal, just morally uncouth.
The Lionguard is essentially a police force. They uphold the law. The Constorium is following the law, and are thus “in the right” as far as the Lionguard goes, even if individual members of the Lionguard aren’t happy with it (Kiel in particular has some conversations with some of the workers at the asura gate that make it clear she’s not happy about the situation). The players in this scenario are also expected to be siding with the law. Maybe it would have been nice to have some branching story paths to take and side with different peoplem, but it’d be more work and I guess they didn’t deem it worth the extra time to develop (or maybe they just don’t like branching “moral” paths).
As for Null…. the Consortium NPC is called Noll, not Null. And Canach has a grudge against Noll in particular (since Noll has been sending assassins to kill him, as mentioned in the blog post), so naming his golem Subdirector Null is an obvious jab at Noll.
As for calling Canach a “rebellious liberator”…. I don’t think that’s really accurate. Canach may claim to be doing this all for the refugees, but his attacks have led to who knows how many refugees getting killed by his crazed wildlife. At the very least he’s misguided (or crazy) and its possible he’s just using the “I’m trying to save the refugees” thing as a justification to himself about his actions, and really all he wants is revenge on the Consortium.
Why would we want the Consortium to keep their contracts that keeps them essentially slaves? Is there more to this story?
Was also wondering about that. If I had the option here, I would let the contracts be destroyed (I like to play as lawful neutral most of the time…although I am rarely given the opportunity…)
Let’s say you enlist in the military and they essentially own you. Things go south and you’re working in “poor” conditions. All of the records stating you are contractually obligated to serve are easily accessible.
Is it right to destroy those because you feel that things are not fair?
No, it’s not like enlisting in the army, it’s like signing a contract to work for a company (like a Japanese sweat shop), and they’ll sue the pants off of you if you quit, but then the building burns down and you have the option to save the papers, but you don’t because it’s your only way out.
Basically, once all is said and done, it simply boils down to the following:
“Looks like Team Rocket’s blasting off again!~~~~~”
A shame fun things could not simply be fun.
