Was watching a Reef Rider today.....
Let’s just say you should be glad you can’t smell them. ^_~
Oh! So they’re gas powered?
Hehe no idea, but if they were filled with gas a little lighter than whatever the air in Tyria is composed of and can inhale heavier air / expel lighter air it would make sense.
…
Until you kill them. At which point they should float away like balloons.
Doh. Ok maybe not gas powered then?
They float using static electricity.

I’m pretty sure in that case if you killed them their muscles would relax and they’d essentially deflate.
it’s what they have been smoking,
or quantum leviatation
but my bets on the first one
Oh! So they’re gas powered?
Perhaps… perhaps.
U guys never saw that little man behind the reef rider holding up a stick…?
If it ain’t dutch,… :P
They float using static electricity.
I think Doggie’s got it, they probably use a polar charge to keep themselves from the ground.
Or something similarly science-y sounding. xD
How does my guardian set things on fire underwater by bashing them really hard with a spear?
How can my necro make you bleed with a drawing on the ground?
How come any of the things in the game just…. are…. at all…
I.e.: stop applying real world logic to a game. “How” anything in this game? Magic. It’s a game.

Your necro is bad at art.

Greek fire, stored within the spear and ignited as you strike (Obviously we’re just being silly). :P
Also lol @ LameFox’s answer above!

Wrong, necro is a good artist, they can make a picture which make people have nose bleed when they watch it (….. err.. step it).
Isn’t it obvious? Invisible mounts! The vets ride pink war elephants. Well, they would be pink, if they weren’t invisible…

It’s rumoured that if you get the Thirst Slayer achievement while near a Reef Rider you can see the pink war elephant for a couple of seconds. Try it!
All wrong, Reef Riders have beaten the Asura to personal anti-gravity devices obviously.

Greek fire still needs oxygen to burn…so it won’t work underwater. It’s just oil/grease based, so attempts to put it out on a wooden ship fail because the oil/grease float on top of the water.

This thread was just for a little fun and levity. With so much negative stuff on these forums, it’s nice to see a light hearted thread. Your reply was exactly what I was trying to get away from….case in point.
Based on the quazi-lore of Guild Wars, earth will float in the presence of water and a strong magical field. The phenomanon explains every instance of random floating rocks throughout the world, possibly including the ones the Asura specifically put there.
It is entirely possible that all the different species of Rider have developed a way to take advantage of this truth to allow themselves to levitate.

“I can do guild wars science, me!”
Invisible monocycle.
You can see them pedaling when they move around.
Full set of 5 unique skills for both dual-wield weapon sets: P/P and D/D – Make it happen
PvE – DD/CS/AC – If that didn’t work, roll a Reaper or Revenant.
I think its because the draw it a little bit up in the air way from the ground ;-P
Every time someone uses The Dreamer, invisible rainbow colored unicorn mounts are set free to run loose in the world. The evil reef riders enslave them and ride around on them. Every time you kill one you free a unicorn, to gallop around Tyria again.
They use the same system as hot air balloons. ^^
For a more serious answer…
The common theory is that riders are thaumovores – they’re typically found in areas of above-average magic without having themselves been created directly by that magic* (as elementals and the like are). Thus, they’re probably using the magic they’ve consumed to facilitate floating.
*We know that at least one species of rider descends from one that was created by a magic-user, but we don’t know if this was the first rider ever, or if it was a magically directed evolution of a preexisting species.

One was looking at me funny

At least it was only looking at you….
One pelted something at me as I ran past , hitting me in the butt and knocking me to the ground, causing me to choke on the omelette I was eating! I would have died if it wasn’t for the Karka that stomped all over me , performing some sort of primative Heimlich maneuver.

Probably just tostay consistent. Any type of riders (and even irukandji) did this levitation trick back in Guild Wars 1. It actually shocked me as they have retconned a lot of other things…
I’m usually typing on my phone
The ones from Gw1 were all mes, so it’s possibly a mental ability? Some kind of psionics?

Use the Force, wind rider?
Please give us a keyring…

My Engi Static Discharge then should….make em float higher?
I got it! Spam SD 4x and let the Reef Rider float high into the thinner air where it eventually suffocates and dies.
Looting becomes a problem.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I saw some reef riders by the water recently. I steered clear of them!

Clearly, what you want to do is use the opposite charge, which will slam them into the ground and make them an easy target.

Breeze Riders, and Riders in general, are a bit of a mystery in GW.

It is hinted that they come from the Mists, so there is all kinds of weird stuff going on with them. You can levitate weirdly when you come from a place where things don’t have to make sense ;P
The answer is magic. As lazy as it sounds, but Riders were actually brought to Tyria from the Mists by a powerful wizard and they always have been able to cast spells. Well I admit in GW1 many creatures were casters for mechanical reasons, but in the case of the Riders it was implied that they actually are spellcasters. In GW2 there is less emphasize on their magical powers, but they still seem to count als magic creatures.

It is never outright said they were brought to Tyria from the mists. It is implied, but not stated. For all we know they originated somewhere else on Tyria and the powerful wizard/mesmer/whatever portalled/summoned them somehow.
