First of all i would like start out by acknowledging the fact that what you are about to read, might just as well be yet another crack pot theory! And bear in mind that, yes i did notice the positive words used to describe the secret of the speech. But one can always hope, right? So hear me out.

So ever since QJ started i’ve been wondering about one simple thing: Why build SO many Watchwork knights for the sole purpose of training the heros of tyria? Seems there are endless numbers of them since we keep slaugtering them in the pavilion, which to me seems like a huge waste of resources since the real mobs still can be found all over Tyria.

WHAT IF, the pavilion wasn’t meant to be combat training for us (though the guantlet did leave me with newfound skills after i finished it). WHAT IF, the pavilion was really combat training for the Watchwork knights? Making them more reliable and finely tuned for the real action?

To sumarize my theory (or rather hope) before moving on: what if Queen Jenna, in her big speech, declares war and calls on the heros of Tyria to fight alongside her own Watchwork knights against the next elder dragon(s)?
By that i dont mean they’ll launch an expansion any time soon (notice that it’s not mentioned as an imidiate game changer), just that we’ll start working towards a KNOWN goal/objective of to the living story.

We have, ever since the living story began, been working towards something bigger. We now have Kiel, a captain of the council (and the rest of the council i presume?) with the technology of the aetherblades at her hands, a character that we the players voted to lead us (somewhere). We have the watchwork knights from the Queen, strong machines that yield no casualties on our behalf, just a lot of gold spend producing them (but the queen seem to have endless supplies of that, so who cares). We have all new loveable and interesting characters like; Rox, Braham, Marjory and Kasmeer. And i believe more additions will come in time, though i believe that beginning to mass produce these watchwork knights would be a good way to start preparing for the assault.

Imagine this to be true:
Now with the end of culling in pve we would see amazingly huge armies march towards the battlefield. Over the dunes of ancient Elona to “little” kralky, or the tundras of the shiverpeaks to the slay Jormag (imagine the biggest “golem” rush ever seen, and you pretty much get the jest).
These Watchwork knights will yield no sacrifice or casualties. We would now have armies on the ground and ships in the air? How much more prepared would we need to be to kill the next dragons?

Also since Trehearnes wyld hunt has ended, we also need a new warmarshal (or what?). If not Kiel, could the queen not be our next warmarshal of the pact? Maybe she’s not as fragile as Logan might have us believe. She certainly has the influence, power and respect from all the races (also i like the queen more than kiel, partly given the fact that i was part of Team Gnashblade ;p)

To conclude: Yes i know this might seem far out, given that it is more likely that the speech will refer to “simple” future living stories (though this has been hyped to be quite enourmous). Yet a tiny hope flickered when i read that the speech would be game changing!

Then again, she might “just” announce the scavenger hunt with the upcoming treasure maps… that would be game changer too i guess, and still stay in the positive wording of the speech.

Any loop holes in my “theory”, ideas, thoughts or theories as to what this also might be, will be greatly appreciated!

Yeah but maybe the beginning of a new series of content, just like F&F but with a new region at the end.

This is true, but hey, with the 4 teams now, the team that’s worked on this release won’t release again until January, so maybe Collin threw out the ‘no new regions this year’ specifically knowing we’d get there at the very beginning of next year? It’s a long shot, but I can dream.

Don’t forget that Colin said that there are a group of designers outside those 4 teams that are designing other content. So it’s safe to say that the 5th team is working on expansion content, and when appropriate, will combine it with living story content.

My hope. The common people of Kryta revolt against the tyrant Jennah, who just spent oodles of tax money on self-aggrandizement while Kryta is in the midst of a war for the survival of all the races of Tyria.

That would be a pretty awesome way to go. It makes sense in the context of what’s going on in the world, and it develops the watchknights into something beyond just another mob. It also gives humanity a turn in the sunlight for the first time in decades!

I think this would commit them to one project for longer than they’d like though, especially as they’re still toying around with what they can achieve with the LS. It would make a sensational build-up to an expansion, however. I’m also not sure how it would manifest itself without new areas to explore this year.

As a side note, I would really like to see some of the watch knights being hijacked by a powerful human with links to the Separatists and used to try to restart the war with the Charr. This would involve attacks on the Black Citadel and sporadic conflicts breaking out in the (neglected) Fields of Ruin. My adventures in Tyria (and the sinking of Orr!) started with the cataclysmic war against the Charr, and I think the uneasy peace deserves more exploration than it’s had thus far.

Sorry to say that , but this crack pot theory (the op’s own words) is pure nonsense.

I have really to ask you one thing .. would you still celebrate the day, if your country’s ruler would declare out of nowhere from one happy day to the next one WAR ???

And why declare war against somewhing, against the whole world is fighting ? Theres no need to declare war against something, when the whole weorld fightsts against something … unless out of nowhere would rise up a new enemy that humans could declare now war to ..

So this theory is pure nonsense with no hands and no feet.
The Watchwork Knights are just a kind of ceremonial sign of the creativity of humans, a thing that is made to withstand the elder dragons basically forever and that is immune to their corruptions.
These steampunk robots should be just a sign of power and endurance of the human race in Tyria, that even something like Elder Dragons can’t overcome them and this since 250 years!!!

They should show to all the other pact races, that they have with the humans one really worthy ally to rely on in regard of the pact army and that the humans put in with all their creativity they have everything into the pact to help all getting rid of the elder dragons and the speech is just a way to let all other races acknowledge this, because they see in the queen of the humans naturally their mightiest leader and most representative voice that can speak for everyone of them.

It would be absosutely unfitting to declare any kind of war in a celebration around the queen’s time as said queen. This would totally ruin the whole celebration factor.

Oh and don’t worry too much about supplies and such things. . this is still a fantasy game and there has not to be in every single thing of this game a dead realistic plausible meaning behind everything. We also shoot unendlessly arrows, we fight against millions of enemies and die thousands of deaths and standing magically instantly up again, as if nothing would have happened at all, so what ???
So why do you make such a fuss about unendless watch knights ?
We also fight daily against unendless undeads, even when Zhaitan is already beaten to a pulp … nothing of that changes, or better said, did change the whole world about Orr and the other few places where undead by zhaitan’s powers risen enemies run around …
—-

And to post also somethign constructive.. my wild guess about the speech is:

I think we will hear from her just stuff about the pact, that all of this was the right decision, that they have to keep the pact unified and try to strenghten it more.
Maybe something about future plans of humans how they will try to help the pact in future (here you can think of maybe humans doing something, that will maybe preset the upcoming living stories into a kind of direction that could lead somewhen to the next dragon..jormag for example I think will be next that humans want to reclaim together with the pact next the north to help the norn and the charr gettign their homelands safe and also claiming back the Hall of Monuments, so that this thign can finally get implemented fully into the game and won’t be anymore just a place that is explorable for GW1 veterans by a teleport item, so stuff that could lead also in future from 2014 on in more new playable maps maybe in the north.. cantha/elona still has time as new continents take alot more time, than just adding single new maps and i still believe that anet keeps this open for add ons for the new continent stuff, because all this is simply way too much content for all 2 weeks coming updates)

I don’t think that the speech will be anything super spectacular mind flashing special, that it will create an enourmous hype wave from players.

I don’t know, what you expect from a “game changer”, but for me is simply every update a game changer, that adds to the game new good features and gameplay elements, as they simply change the game into a way, how the game didn’t worked before.

To me would be a game changer if with a next update would get WvW massively improved for example by addign more different WvW maps finally to the game, redesigning alot of the partwise obsolete WvW skills and merge some together to reduce a bit the amount of the current WvW skills and use the moment to add something really senseful to WvW that improves everyones class roles in WvW – Class Specific WvW Skills!!!

Personally I like the idea behind sub classes ~ quoted from Chris Whiteside

I bet the Living Story writers and Colin are really sad he said that. I guess the intention always was to manage expectations, so in a sense it’s working, but knowing that there will be no dragon or new zone this year is really putting a damper on the speculation on the secrets of the second half of this month.

I think of it as putting a damper on expectations. It would suck to have people build up all this hype and then suddenly realize that nothing extravagant is happening. Yeah it stinks but it’s the right move.

And especially with how GW2 players seem to be the most entitled of all, managing expectations is important otherwise these forums would be drowned in constant complaining.

We all realise this is blue skies thinking, first and foremost. I agree that there is pretty much no chance of this happening, but to address your point from a storytelling perspective:

Humanity is at war. It has been at war for hundreds of years, with the charr, the tengu, the centaurs, the undead, the mursaat, even itself. Now it has the dragons to face on top of all those things, and it has been driven back to a few remaining strongholds.

Now imagine a Queen Elizabeth I “heart and stomach of a King” moment. The newly unveiled watch knights presented as heralds of a new dawn for humanity and their chance to be on the front foot and seize its own destiny for the first time in centuries. To go from defensive stagnation to a new golden age where humanity can finally carve itself a path to a future peace.

I’m not saying that this will happen (it won’t, sadly), but you could easily justify it along these terms.

tl; dr all the comments. But you do notice the Mesmer dissipation effect when you kill the Clockwork Knights right? They’re actually extensions of the vast power of Jennah’s abilities. At least the ones we keep killing are. There may indeed be some real deal ones, but IMO we have been killing Illusions displayed by Jennah’s freaky insane Mesmer Powers
