Does Scarlett carry a grudge?
Stormbluff Isle [AoD]
Nope, it’s no coincidence. She does indeed hunt down specific players the whole event. Happened to me a while ago, she jumped me a half dozen times while I was alone at a vendor. I’ve heard some poor guys even had her shoot them off the end of a jumping puzzle, lol.
what are the chances of some employee at anet controlling scarlet?
not really controlling, but like, assigning simple commands such as, “lock onto target xxx” for example?
have seen this happening as well. some people might find it annoying, but I find it hilarious and very in-character for scarlet. it really fits her to lock onto one target and simply go after it, ignoring the giant army on the map. batkitten crazy but still very focused ^^
I’ve heard people complaining about it, but since chances are it happens only once, if at all, to anyone, it will only ‘interfere’ with the mindless farming for one invasion, I really hope people can endure it without crying too much.
Their AI often picks a ‘favourite’ target. I have one character, an engineer, which seems to have personally offended bloody nigh every creature in the game, with a few exceptions which would wilfully ignore it until every other player there was dead. Scarlet can appear anywhere on the map… so, I’m guessing that she (and her aggro table) persists between appearances, leading her to frequently pick someone and repeatedly come back to them.
Of course, it could be intentional, but I don’t think it would need to be. Even if it isn’t, given it pretty much fits anyway, I doubt they’d do anything to it.
Yeah, she does that. Some guy she was stalking even run to the jumping puzzle, and she spawned there at the end.
That’s bloody brilliant. It adds character to her. I have not had the misfortune yet of being on her list. But my advise would probably be: "RUN!

If I was an employee of an MMO company, I’d probably be fired for doing just that..
I can imagine it in WoW, for example… controlling a boss during a raid and making it say “you know what??? tonight I’m going for the healers first!!!”..

Actually, we weren’t complaining at all. Even my wife found it pretty funny after a while.

I had it happen when I wasn’t even doing the event. I closed one portal and then went to do my own thing. I didn’t know it was actually programmed in…I thought I was special

Does your engineer have high toughness? That commonly makes mobs aggro on you.

It has toughness, but only via a set of knight’s armour + one shield. Pistols, the rifle, and all trinkets are berserk, so I doubt it’s breaking any records or anything.

And not stop running for at least a few years lol.
Chaos always finds a way, who you think Evil learned it from?
And no one is immune to this, it seems. After reading the other thread about this last night I tweeted to Martin Kerstein (who was talking about playing) that Scarlet might “like” him. He responded that she’s come after him five times.
I haven’t had it happen to me as of yet. Do you have to damage her enough to trigger something, or is it just random?

I guess it’s random, she did it to me yesterday while I was crafting on fields of ruin and the invasion started. I hadn’t even noticed it started until Scarlet started to spawn on me over and over, and I never even did damage to her, and wasn’t near any event or other people so never even did damage to any invasion related mob either.

Its not random. In one event I did, I was literally the only person she spawned on and it was directly on top of me knocking me down instantly. At the end when we killed her, she also spawned on me. She killed me around 15 times. The one coincidence was that in that round I fully DPS her at the start of the event and she despawned after saying she was putting me on her list. I believe there is a trigger where if you attack her she will lock on you. But if your the only one during the event who attacks her your in for a rough ride because she will only spawn on you. If others attack she may spawn on them instead. No way its a coincidence that she can only spawn on me for an entire event with hundreds of people on the map.

I don’t think it depends on the wether you attack her or not, as I said I do believe it’s random whoever she picks, but once she does, she keeps at them for the whole event (even spawn on them when the event ends and you have to kill her). She did it to me, spawned at least 8 times (most likely more since I had to leave the computer a few times and my char was in a different spot than where I left it), and I was just crafting in the zone, never did any of the events, attacked her or any mob related to the invasion at all.

This happened to one of my friends last night. Scarlet spawned 10 times on him lol.
Brilliant design and it really fits with her psycho-character lol
Also this is actually a very useful mechanic if the target positions themselves in a favorable area, coordinating with any commanders to be near the event zergs and a convenient, non-contested waypoint right before Scarlet spawns for the last time. Announcing it on Map chat would let people get ready to pounce on her if they get to spawn.
During one invasion ( two separate portals) Scarlet hunted me down relentlessly and killed me, even though I ran from the portal. Either she hates my necro, or I possesses some threat to her master plan. LOL
No complaints I love the Scarlet vileness.
I’m one of the “lucky” that have been marked. Scarlet’s been on my kitten for a while now, and generally just murders me once or twice when she’s gone berserk. I’ve thought, okay, I can deal with it despite my growing urge to smash my keyboard over the nearest dev’s head (they’ve been cagey about staying out of my line of sight, so far…).
But when it gets to the point where her antics make accomplishing tasks—those tasks the devs set out for you—impossible, how is that smart design? I can understand occasional harassment. Even the occasional sucker-kill (which I’ve put up with several times already), but when I’m in the process of trying to do a daily to get this meta completed, and I get murdered twice within 30s of zoning in, then get jumped AGAIN within 10s of that (just happened before this post)…it’s gotten to the point where I’m literally being shut down by the devs and their clever idea.
I’m going to assume that this level of rabidity is just a chance and not some kind of permanent escalation. I’m also going to guess that I may have been the only (or first) marked target that logged into that particular overflow, so I got all her tough love for myself.
However, if this continues to happen, I’m not sure how I’ll handle it. If it somehow prevents me from finishing the meta….

I don’t think it’s random at all. When it happened to my wife she happened to hit Scarlet hard early in the event, at which point the emote happened. After that, Scarlet clearly homed in on her over everyone else every time … even attacked her out in the open once where there wasn’t an invasion at all.
I had pretty much the same thing happen to me in a later event. I happened to be the only one hitting Scarlet for a while the first time she spawned and got the emote about being put on her list. After that, she spawned on top of me several times, although as a Thief I could usually escape via stealth (Blinding Powder since it’s quick).

That’s the thing, I’ve gotten the same emote (being put on her list and stuff) without doing any damage at all. I was crafting in ebonhawke, had the TP and bank windows open covering most of the screen doing a checklist of all the materials I needed to level artificing to 400 and buying the ones I didn’t have when I noticed the screen below those windows start to move around, I closed them just in time to see scarlet hit my character again (I hadn’t even noticed the invasion had started on that map) say the “I’ve put you on my list” thing and dissapear, never once attacked her, there was nobody else around, and there wasn’t even any portal open nearby. After that she kept spawning on me, I had other things to do so I parked the character next to the ebonhawke waypoint, and sure enough when the event ended that’s where she spawned for everyone to kill.

Hhmmm … interesting. I wonder if there had been an open portal nearby and Scarlet simply didn’t have anyone other than you to attack. It is possible to solo close a portal (like the tunneling ones), so maybe an individual or small group closed one and then split before Scarlet spawned. Just speculating …

There was no portal nearby (I checkec as soon as she dissapeared). Ebonhawke is in the lower left corner of the map, all portals were from the middle and up of the map and a few on the lower right corner, but there was no portals or invasion related mobs anywhere near where I was, which is why I do think that the person she picks to follow is chosen at random.

I can verify that it has nothing to do with how much damage you do to her. I had just zoned my Ele into Lornar’s Pass to do the events and no one else was around. Scarlet spawned right on top of me and I ran without firing. She then spawned on top of me in excess of a dozen times, mostly when I was running from event to event, resulting in 3 deaths.
My question is, “Did you all complete Scarlet’s Playhouse?” My husband has pointed out some threatening language used by Scarlet after you defeat her the final time in the Playhouse.
btw, the character stalked by Scarlet was not the one I completed the Playhouse with.

Okay, now I really am curious.
ArenaNet, you see the conversation taking place here. Is Scarlet programmed to behave in this manner, or is there some dev randomly choose players to harass?

I’ve completed the playhouse, but my wife never has and neither of us completed it before we somehow earned Scarlett’s wrathful focus in those earlier invasions. In fact, tonight I only did one invasion and never hit Scarlett at all, yet twice she singled me out for being netted even though I was on the opposite side of the large group both times and as best I could tell nobody else got the net. I escaped only because I could stealth.
