I was just checking out my Youtube subscription videos when youtube recommanded this Video from Wodden Potatos, who he was talking about the Traumnova Reactor fractal, and connected it at the End all to the current living story. Where it basically is a Battle of DR with Steam Creatures and Aetherblades.

I just can say that it was pretty informative and just MIND BLOWN

Too complex for Anet. Their story telling is as two dimensional as Trehearne.

But the theory that the Steam Creatures and the Aetherblades are related sounds pretty logical for me, i mean we never got an explanation where there are from :/

Even the Wiki says:

“They were made by an asuran “Grand High Sovereign” of a possible future in an alternative reality and used to conquer Tyria, and then sent into the past – however, there is no further evidence on whether the Steam creatures invading Lornar’s Pass have come from this Grand High Sovereign or from another source"
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Steam_Creature

Also it is mentioned in the Personal Living Story that there will be a Battle of Divinitys Reach which seems to happen next week.

Which is funny because Konig brought up the fact they came from a steam portal during the instance event. Wooden potatoes on the other hand completely missed this point.

If you use some elses research, it’s common to give them proper credit. In some cases not properly crediting your sources can make you loose your job. Don’t believe me? Karl Theodor zu Guttenberg, formerly germanies minister of defense. Not anymore. Why? Because he didn’t credit his sources in doctoral thesis. When a journalist found this out, he lost his doctor title and his job.

Now this is just a game, but giving credit where credit’s due, is just decent human behaviour.

Or the Engineers actually built the steam creatures since if you look at some of the armor on the post your engineer thread some do look steam creature like. It could be possible that in the alternative reality the asura player’s double is actually a member of the Inquest stole the schematics from the Aetherblades and conquered their reality. In this reality since the player isn’t a member of the Inquest this won’t come to be. The Battle of Divinity’s Reach could, in theory, never take place now due to this single action. The Aetherblades could be a faction of Charr, Human, Norn, and Sylvari Engineers seeking to combine their scientific technology with the Asura Magitech. The Inquest is backing them as it would give them a significant edge over their competition. The end result will be Steam Creatures.

Just due to the few pieces of hatred towards WoodenPotatoes, i’d say he often does say he heard of a theory, or someone mentioned …
And he does often out in his own thoughts…
His videos are informative and interesting, although perhaps inspired by others.

I must mention 1 thing!!!
Anet stated that this patch would put together a lot of things so that previous episodes of living story would make more sense. That they actually have a plan with it, and it’s not just a bunch of unconnected stories.

since discovering WP’s channel I’ve watched pretty much every single video he put out regarding GW2, as well as some of the others.

he collects all the information he can, from various sources and presents his view on how these tidbits could connect together. he never claims he’s the finder of this stuff, he just puts it together in a coherent manner and presents a theory he or others came up with – and he does that in a very interesting manner, spinning a convincing tale around it. his creation is the presentation, not the finding of this information, which would be clear to anyone watching his videos.

apart from that, I like his ideas a lot more than ANet’s, because they often are quite intriguing. take the sixth dragon (not bubbles, the other one) for example. crucible of eternity makes it pretty clear the last unknown dragon is connected to nature. then there’s the fact that in GW1 the gods had quests where a facet of them was a dragon. making it seem the gods and the dragons are tightly connected. this would make the whole pale-tree=6th dragon theory rather interesting and give lots of opportunities to tell a grand story.

yet I highly doubt the stale storytelling from ANet could ever match these ideas, thus, aetherblades will disrupt the queens speech, she will probably survive and we’ll have a temporary instance to fight her or something alike. and in 4 weeks, everything is back to where it was, with no reminder of the past, a new player will never know of the events that took place in these living story thingies.
but please, prove me wrong ANet, I’d love some actually interesting and longliving story =)

If WP started crediting people for their theories, at some point we’ll have the scenario whereby he credits someone who had the same idea as someone else. It’ll just end up being a battle of “who came up with it first”, which can only get ugly. Either that, or Konig Fanboys march on Seattle petitioning ArenaNet to ban WP from making any more videos.

If you use some elses research, it’s common to give them proper credit. In some cases not properly crediting your sources can make you loose your job. Don’t believe me? Now this is just a game, but giving credit where credit’s due, is just decent human behaviour.

It’s a lore video, made by a guy who likes making videos. They entertain many people, myself included. And do you know what? I don’t even care who came up with the theories, even if he did find a way to ascertain who really was the very first person to come up with a theory (which I imagine is far easier said than done in some cases).

His videos are concise snippets of lore and theorising. He always seems to make clear what is theory and what is in-game fact. Anyone who has spent any time on these forums knows that “The Great and Powerful Konig” is the self proclaimed god of lore anyway, so there’s a pretty decent bet who came up with the initial theory in the first place.

Frankly, anyone watching a video that’s not from ArenaNet’s official channel really should be taking it with a pinch of salt anyway. If it ‘aint from ArenaNet’s official channel there’s a good chance it’s all just a pack of lies. Whilst I love watching WP’s videos for a variety of reasons, I always run by this basic principle.

So please, get off your high horse… or correct all my grammar like forum-goers usually resort to. That’s the next logical step, right?

Funny because no its actually from a Reddit post, not konig, he just posted it as fast as he could later on the forums.

Or he did come up with the same theory, roughly at the same time. Unlike WP, Konig usually provides his sources if he has any. WP however mentioned that he got it from somewhere, but he didn’t specify. That said, if Konig really stole the research, then I just lost a lot of respect for him, but I highly doubt it.

I just want WP to tell his audience where he got his stuff from, so that those people stop being just a passive audience and come to forums or reddit or whatever to actually contribute. The few people who currently come to the forums, do it with their WP video links to tell us about the awesome lore they just found out about. If WP would give direct sources, they’d just come to the forums, read the thread and then continue it, instead of making new threads about basic stuff we already know.

Yeah because it’s impossible for two people to independently come up with the same idea. I myself was batting around this possibility before I read the forums or saw the YT video.

No it’s not impossible, but WP outright said that he had it from the somewhere, so why not give full credit, if you are already willing to admit that you just saw the theory somewhere.

It’s a lore video, made by a guy who likes making videos. They entertain many people, myself included. And do you know what? I don’t even care who came up with the theories, even if he did find a way to ascertain who really was the very first person to come up with a theory (which I imagine is far easier said than done in some cases).

So please, get off your high horse… or correct all my grammar like forum-goers usually resort to. That’s the next logical step, right?

It’s not about finding out who came up with it first. Do you even know what crediting your sources means? If I write an essay about the romans, I might quote some english historian from the 19th century, who said something about the roman senate. Basically the same thing could have been said by Cicero, but I still give credit to the english historian for the quote. Why? Because I freaking quoted him, not Cicero!

The same applies to WP, it doesn’t matter if he read the theory on reddit or in the lore forums, as long as he gives us the name of the source. It’s not even extra work for WP, he doesn’t have to find out who said what first, he just has to tell us where he got his information from. I don’t why this is so hard, that’s the first thing you learn on any university.

And no, I’m not a Konig fanboy, he was just the most recent example of that typical WP behavior. In fact I’m as often in odds with Konig as I agree with him. But I respect him enough to give him credit when it’s due.

PS: I never correct anyone’s grammar. English isn’t my first language, so I think that would be hypocritical.

You don’t win friends with salad! Sorry I just got caught up in the rhythm.

Reasonable response, Buddha. However, just a quick call-out in saying that WP does sometimes add links to the description if he feels the video needs a reasonable source – a recent(ish) example is his video on the Zephyrites and their Glint connection – but it is a relatively rare occurrence.

For me personally, I just remember when WP had good lore videos… wonder when the Cantha ones are coming out…

Concise is hardly what I’d call his videos, he tends to ramble on a lot and retread the same territory a lot.

Also: I thought we all agreed to stop doing the whole “Yer just gonna do x like everybody else” argument back in middle school.

In any case, my issue with WoodenPotatoes is that everyone else seems to take his theories as fact, even when they’re somewhat grasping at straws and then you have people fervently defending his wild theory as though it were abject fact.

That’s not really a problem with WP, though, so much as it’s a problem with fans being fans.

The theory is extremely cool and though indeed there is evidence for deep stories like that A-Net hasn’t presented any of it in a good way, making it look extremely shallow. I hope they learn from their mistakes soon enough and we do get stories like that. It shouldn’t be too deep, because then it would be impossible for people to follow who play it more casually.

then there’s the fact that in GW1 the gods had quests where a facet of them was a dragon. making it seem the gods and the dragons are tightly connected. this would make the whole pale-tree=6th dragon theory rather interesting and give lots of opportunities to tell a grand story.

You should inform yourself through the lore forum, not through WP’s videos.

The gods did not have quests where a facet of them was a dragon. The heroes of GW1 sought out the aid of the Dragon Prophet Glint, whose lair contained various dragon facets (basically versions of herself, that represented all the professions in the game) that tested the heroes, before she would grant them an audience.

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Dragon%27s_lair

The gods and the dragons as far as we know, are not tightly connected. And the Pale Tree is not the sixth dragon. We know that for a fact.

Oh that quest. Well that doesn’t really imply a connection between the Gods and the dragons either. The facets from Glint’s Lair were simply recycled for a test of the Gods in that quest. But everything else we know about the Gods lacks dragons completely. And keep in mind, these were spirits shaped like dragons, not actual dragons.

It’s a rather weak link to be honest. If you can call it a link at all.
