Q:

So many people come to the maps and run at walls or other nonsense that seems to be borderline botting, just to get the reward for everyone else’s hard work. Are we supposed to report these people? If so, is botting the appropriate selection?

A:

The most recent people that were seen doing it, finally started talking to people right as the reward was about to pop. They flat out stated that they were Akitteng on purpose. That brought up the discussion on whether or not it was ok, so I just came here and asked.

It would be hard to AFK accidentally.

Anyway, running into a wall won’t help, I used to try it when I went for lunch or whatever and wanted to be able to check if I’d got any messages when I returned. The game sometimes leaves you AFK for quite a while before kicking you though, and the events only go 45 min at the longest. They’re probably just doing something at the very beginning or end to get credit, then leaving, which doesn’t really matter as far as other people doing events goes. For them to even ruin one you’d basically need a group of people AFK at the event so that they scale it… and even then, it’d be simple to go around it if by some miracle there weren’t enough people to still complete it. It’s not like you run out of them.

Could also be a person lagging like hell?
And also afk-ers do not bother me, some are just there to complete the achievement points and the way it’s build now they do not have to do anything, nothing wrong with that. :/

I like how this begins with ‘Q: Q:’.

Also, using auto-run is not botting and it doesn’t keep you from an AFK kick. They’re probably in the map, or lagging, or just got distracted IRL.

I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure you get SFA for being there and not fighting, anyway.

Geez I hope you don’t start reporting people who are AFK or just standing around, I do that a lot because RL likes to pop in at the worst times and make me leave my desk – especially during a 40 minute raid. How do you know they’re purposely “ruining” the invasion anyhow? I’ve been on a map doing hearts when an invasion popped up and decided to avoid it.

This QQing is getting ridiculous.

I don’t see how afkers can ruin your experience.

No, we were discussing the people that set their characters to run into an object and AFK. We weren’t talking about people that were just standing still, that may have taken a restroom break or something.

But again, as I already stated, this particular group flat out stated that they had intentionally went Akitten order to get rewarded without having to do the event.

At this point you will probably have more who afk. Many people have to repeat the invasions all over again to find the one that didn’t count for them.

1) you have to kill clockworks (possibly a champion clockwork is required)
2) then you need to ensure that you don’t disconnect or end up in another overflow – best way to do this is stay away from fights and do not waypoint

I’m sick of repeating the invasions and will just try and kill a clockwork champion and then go run in a safe corner and read a book for fun.

So OP how can you differentiate between ‘trolling’ afkers and legit afkers?

You want Anet to ban those who merely AFK? Imagine the kittenstorm on this forum?

“Anet you are punishing me for not playing the game and forcing me to always do things when I’m online”

Well, like I’ve said, that flat out stated it. Someone was surprised because he thought he saw bots and stated this in map chat. People mentioned the need to report them and shortly thereafter, the “bots” started complaining because people mentioned reporting them. This happened roughly one minute before the Invasion failed.

The “bots” specifically said that they were running against the rock so they wouldn’t look like they were AFK to the game and could get the reward, because they didn’t want to actually do the event.

Normally, I don’t think I or anyone else on the map would have cared too much. However, it wasn’t a full map of people this time, and we missed Scarlet by one or two mobs. Mobs that could have easily been killed by help from the “bots”. In this particular situation, it cost the rest of the map to miss some of the reward.

As to your question about differentiating between the two types of AFK, I would think seeing someone running against an object, in the same place for the length of multiple events, is quite a bit different than a random person that you pass while they are standing still for a quick AFK.

It didn’t cost you the event since if they were banned/kicked for Akitteng or botting, they wouldn’t be there to help you anyway. Botting, running against walls, or reported or kicked, they’re no help to you.

That said, them being there doesn’t change your experience at all. Rewards or xp aren’t affected in any way. I say just ignore them and have a little patience because some of them are just trying to figure out what maps they still need and the game currently provides no way to know that, except for being there invasion after invasion. And who has time for that? There’s real life to attend to. This is currently the only way to do it without sacrificing your entire personal life.

You might find yourself having to do the same before you get those 13 maps.

@videoboy

I can understand the frustration of failing the event. However, if you were in an overflow with too few people, without those afk people or with them doesn’t matter. If they weren’t going to play, the alternative for them would be to not be there. Either way they wouldn’t be helping.

LoL, banning ppls for afk while not being in a group will be a joke, this is not premade group only a farm zerg like in pavilion where 50% of people were standing at the center.

No one said anything about banning people for going AFK, like the people in the center of the Pavilion do. The question was about those few AFKers that deliberately try to trick the computer into thinking that they are actively playing, while being Akitten order to reward themselves. That was the discussion we were having in game.

As an aside, there IS an AFK function in the game.

Banning or kicking, it doesn’t matter. You brought up reporting, we all assumed it was to enforce one of those two solutions (otherwise, why report?).

The point still stands. It brings no harm and whatever would come from reporting would be of no help regarding event completion and rewards.

Return of the Bots!!!

The longer this invasion event goes on, the more bots I see.
