The End of Culling.
There should be a slider similar to WvW one rendered player number, so that lower end systems could lower it to not suffe from lagg and higher end users could see all the players around.

I hope this is the case. I wish there was some fast toggle switch for it though. Most of the time this is not needed just in large zergs. I plan on testing this out on some World bosses when it is released.
I agree that there had better be some sort of slider or toggle put in place for those who run the game on less powerful systems. I really like the game and all, but I’m not going to upgrade my system just so I can play it.

The setting adjustments you can make currently will expand beyond just WvW, and simply be a game wide setting you apply for culling rules. For most folks, this means you can adjust the settings to actually improve your performance over current performance if you wish, since fallback models and name-tags are cheaper than full model renders.
If you do want to turn everything up to insane, you also now have that option to see an extremely large number of people in all their graphics glory. The choice is entirely yours!
In other words, yes you will be able to adjust culling levels the same as WvW.

I’m looking forwards to seeing how L.A. looks when I can actually see everyone! I suspect we’ve only seen a skeleton of its actual bustle.

Fare Thee Well Culling! We will not miss thine illusions and misleadings!
I ugraded my video card just for GW2 and it made no difference since my bottle neck is the CPU. This game is very CPU driven and not so much video card. ;(
I can’t wait to see how many people actually play the game for once. I am going to need to do some major graphics tweaking though.

I’m afraid some of this computer speak of “fallback models” is a little lost on me. Does this mean to play the game at our current performance, we would have to reduce our graphics settings?

Look at the settings currently in there for WvW set everything to low. Then go to WvW you will see what they mean by fallback models.

Same, hoping my 5 y/o cpu doesn’t buckle down :c
I’ve recently renewed my Gfx card but still experience and ungodly amount of lag. I’m still planning to upgrading cpu + mobo when I can afford to.

Alrighty, I’ll have a look later tonight when I can get in game

“Fallback models” are basically just generic models rather than rendering the players’ actual equipment and character model. So you’ll just see generic humans, generic charr, ect instead of seeing that players actual customized appearance. Keeps the game from having to receive and display unique models for every character, thus reducing the resources the game needs to use and show.
Its a specific graphic setting in the options. The last two dropdown menus in the Graphics pane, specifically. The first one controls how many models period you see, and the second controls how many models will be high quality (full customized models) and how many will be fallback models. Right now its WvW only, but after the next patch it’ll apply game-wide.
You might have to reduce those settings accordingly to get the same performance you’re now getting. The other settings should be fine as-is, though.

Fallback models are also used for people who have hard drives that take a while to load model data, or lots of models very quickly. Below are images of them in WvW (with team colors on) before I got a solid state drive.

Thanks for those, never seen them before (having an SSD my self)

Prepare for the lag.
Really wonder if its better for people without highend systems and ssd…and if the new graphicsettings can really compensate it for them
Cheers for the clearer responses guys
Still worried about performance issues, but I’ll play with settings and hopefully it’ll be OK

Instead of a binary toggle can we get a slider so that we can customize the threshold of culling that works best for our system? My machine is able to handle large scale events like Claw of Jormag and Tequatl well but it would be nice to have cull sliding so that I can decide how much or little pizzazz I want.
Well i can give a quick awnser to that, Even with a highend system culling is still a problem. I use kitten 550MB/555MB reed/write got an up to date CPU overclocked @ 5GHz 8GB of highend DDR3 also overclocked and a beast of a VGA. And culling is still a problem for me. Even with the recent anti culling for wvwvw i have major problems with zergs. So i’m sceptical about it all.

Sometimes when i’ll look on the player, then I can see him, but when I’ll change my screen view, then player disappears. Does End of Culling mean that now we will be able to always see these players? No matter from what perspective we ’re looking?
RolePlay/PvP/Raid
WvW is beyond painful on my computer even with everything always set to the lowest settings, so I’m really hoping this doesn’t mean the entire game will be near impossible for me to play. That’d be a huge dissapointment.
I for one am glad I just upgraded to an i7-4770 + gtx780
It won’t help. Your framerates will still be pitiful, just like everyone elses’. This game does not scale well when lots of people are on screen and will bring even top of the line consumer hardware to its knees.

So does this also mean the difficulty of popular Dynamic Events is going to keep being ratcheted up along with that? IE: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Temple-of-Balthazar-event-impossible/first
In this example, what makes it “impossible” is usually the Culling Limitations themselves. You typically can’t see the special Mobs before they make the events automatically fail by one-shotting everything or getting one-shot.
Does removing that limitation for people with more powerful computers mean that everyone is now going to be expected to complete these these new more difficult events? (that weren’t listed in the Patch notes as one of your Devs admits there)

The best part of the PvE culling introduction is that that team can finally start working on the performance of the client proper.
It´s simply inconceivable how CPU bottlenecked this client is. The only reason nobody in the Tech support board is really whining about it anymore is because they either upgraded to Intel or simply quit.

Thus the perfect example of Geometry Instancing :-)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geometry_instancing
Not only should the game client be offloading all the load to the GPU for this, it should also be on the speedy side for the GPU to render. If I remember correctly, GPU instancing had some decent improvements through D3D9 to D3D11, so unfortunately we won’t be gaining those benefits.
If the game client was quite clever though, coupled with a standard mesh for each race and some very clever (and lots of) shader scripts, you could virtually off-load all of the character models to pure GPU, which in turn will also lower CPU dependencies. Of course it might already do this, and I am just guessing at how I would implement it
Client optimizations are in the works along with server side improvements to reduce skill lag, I assure you that. There isn’t really a time-frame set for when these will start rolling out (hopefully in the next month). I hope to have more information on that soon.
The last thing we want to do is alienate the player base that doesn’t have hardcore gaming machines. As Colin mentioned, there are benefits to using the graphics settings for character models coupled with the removal of culling.

Can AMD useser expect any performance improvements in near/distant future? Because I have a pretty good PC (~1000€ rig) and still GW2 is a terrible and I mean TERRIBLE AMD adjusted game. FPS varies from 17-60 for absolutely no logic reason.
Because you should at least increase the performance once before worsen it again.
So pleaaase?

Really glad to hear this: “Down with Culling!” I have disliked this for a long time, so finally it will be nice not to have people just randomly pop up beside you, but actually see everyone around.

What I would love is more choice in what I can and can’t see and not such simplistic limits like the WvW culling. I’d really love to be able to turn off mesmer illusions, pets and other people’s effects from weapons sometimes so it would allow me to see what mobs are doing a bit better.
The last thing we want to do is alienate the player base that doesn’t have hardcore gaming machines.
The thing is, even if you do have a “hardcore gaming machine” the game still runs extremely poorly when there are lots of players on screen using abilities.
Glad to hear optimizations are in the works.

I’m curious myself what are u using? i use a AMD FX8350 myself and i think the problem lies with how the cpu works. altho it says it’s a octocore, when in heavy use it still a quadcore doing a multitask thing there bulldozer core is there way of hyperthreading. Or so this is my understanding of their architecture. Maybe there client can’t adress the hardware properly or god forbid ^^ amd it’s CPU is a piece of kitten.

^Most games like this that have to Process large NUMBERS of entities all at once with all this eye candy on top before it can be sent to the GPU, don’t really to use more than 2-3 cores (so the load balances out to about 70% of 4 cores). It’s an issue with Redundancy in the architecture IMO, and AMD’s chips just aren’t as “clean” as Intel’s are … more impurities which means more resistance whenever the same set of paths are over-processed (& others sit vacant). But it’s not a huge disparity either.
It’s going to be a constant problem until MMO/FPS makers come up with a better architecture (but they’ll probably try some stupid “Cloud” architecture instead first) …Other people think it’s just the 32 bit components slowing it down… They’re only half right. The truth is you just can’t compare an Online Game to a straight up Benchmarking algorithm and expect the same performance from the prior. There’s just too many things the Programmers can’t even be expected to “balance perfectly” to every single core. It’s exactly like a previous game that “had too many skills”.

No the CPU is definitely not the reason, its GW2s fault. Because every other game runs perfectly fine.
I run a fx8320 (8 core) black edition.
