According to the Game update notes:
The Twisted Watchwork Portal Device is a single-use consumable that teleports the user to a random place in Tyria. The destination may be very rewarding, very dangerous, both, or anywhere in between.

Was in an LA Overflow when I decided to use the one that dropped for me.
And nothing happened. I went nowhere..
So – what’s the chances of being teleported to the exact same spot I’m standing in? No idea but I suspect that the device did nothing.

So – anyone actually seen this device work?

Co-incidentally, I received a mail from GW2 support with 3 sips of karma (gave me 1350 karma in total) for some reason I couldn’t quite fathom. Didn’t specifically say for the disappointment of my portal device failing (come on – Asuran surely!). If that was my consolation prize, sorry Anet – not very rewarding! :-)

The portal device has a chance of not working at all and knocking you down as well as teleporting you somewhere. It’s unfortunate your use was a dud.

The karma jugs were a compensation for the lack of forewarning about the change to karma jugs/consumables no longer being affected by boosts/banners.

well, this thing is really unrelying I’m at 2/2 fail for the twisted watchwork portal. I’m happy that i didn’t have them via the recipe.

For the cost of making/buying it, it really does need to have a much higher chance of actually sending you somewhere. I bought one on the TP to test and, having read in here that the “duds” seemed to be happening when using them from a city, I hopped out to Almuten Estates. No good, just fell on my face.

Oddly, when I ran off a short distance and ran back, I got knocked down again in the vicinity of where I’d used the device.

I did an in-game bug report on it.

In WoW they had something similar via Engineering. I had a guild mate who did a little contest, asking in guild chat for people to place bets on where he’d end up and then awarding a small prize to the person who got it right. That would be so fun here, but you would need to be sure you would be sent somewhere. It also could make for fun RP, all sorts of things — but not if almost every time you just get faceplanted in place.

The portal device is a gold sink. Enjoy being broke.

Just had this happen to me with one I got as a drop. If I had known beforehand that it had a chance of failure (or was bugged?), I wouldn’t have used it.
