Post contains Spoilers!

I have seen a lot of threads about Trahearne but I have avoided reading them because I wanted to avoid spoilers, so… I just want to ask does the rest of the story continue in this trend? Is it worth continuing or should I just quit while I am ahead?

I am asking because I loved my personal story so far but I have just finished ‘A Light in the Darkness’ and I honestly felt like a third wheel throughout the entire thing. The Pale Tree/Mother Tree barely mentioned my character at all and when she did it was just to point out that Trahearne will need my assistance.

She kept pushing Trahearne to take on this role while he kept insisting that he is just a scholar and he does not really want to. In the end she even shoves a sword in his hands to seemingly guilt trip him into doing it whether he wants to or not.

I know I over simplified that a little bit but the point is the whole time this was going on all I kept thinking was hey, I’m here too, when do we start talking about my role? Where is my awesome weapon/gift/thingy? If he doesn’t want to do this then heck I will, just give me half a chance, but instead it seems I am just the lackey that does all the fighting for him.

I honestly don’t even mind the third-wheel-feel so much as the fact that this is just a random character that suddenly jumped into my story line out of the blue. My character has no reason to want to follow him or even want him around for that matter, I find him really annoying. He is nothing more than a friend of a friend and now suddenly he is suppose to be my new best buddy?

If this is going to set the trend for the rest of the personal story then it seems like I will have a lot of disappointments ahead.

Yes, unfortunately the rest of the story continues that trend. You’re at the point now where your character is essentially irrelevant and Trahearne takes over as the main character of the story. Even when you get to take on Zhaitan at the end, the one point since before Claw Island where it feels like you’re supposed to be the main character, it feels like an afterthought. Like an “Oh, you’re still here? Well you might as well kill the Elder Dragon, I guess.”

Obviously it’s still worth doing for the rewards, but hopefully if you go into it knowing what to expect, it won’t be so disappointing. You’re definitely not alone in your thoughts about how Trahearne was handled, and I hope ArenaNet learns from it for future personal story content. Would’ve thought they’d have learned from the whole Kormir thing, but third time’s a charm, right?

Im amazed people missed the most important part about ‘Light in the Darkness’.

That vision is as much for you if not more so than it is for Trahearne.

For Trahearne it is just a shove to make him face his fate. For the Player its the Pale Tree telling him what has to happen. Think about it. What does the member of the Edge of Destiny have to do with Trahearne? Nothing.

The Pale Tree is showing you what needs to happen for Zhaitan to be beaten:

She shows you the orders have to unite. Who is it who brings together the orders to form the pact? The Player Character.

She shows you Trahearne is needed to lead because of his expertise and neutrality. Who’s suggestion makes Trahearne the Marshel of the Pact? The Player Character.

She says that the Edge of Destiny needs to come back together. Who is it who fasilitates that? The Player Character.

She shows that that the corruption needs to be removed? Player character is involved in that too.

Every step upto and including Zhaitan’s death she shows you so you, the PC, not Trahearne, can make it happen.

You guide Trahearne into facing his duty and give him the confidence he needs. Your bring the Orders together to form the Pact. You place Trahearne in the position of Marshal. You bring Destiny’s Edge back together. You lead the charge, you save the day….

You kill Zhaitan. Not Trahearne. You.

But apparently its Trahearne’s Personal Story.

/facepalm

So basically, she shows that the player character will be doing all the hard work while Trahearne gets all the credit for it? And I guess that is suppose to be ok since at least you know you are actually the one that did everything even if all the other characters give the credit to someone else. Sorry, but that sounds like a terrible story to me.

I am not going to discuss this with you any further since you clearly did not even bother to read my post properly. I mentioned very specifically that I am trying to avoid spoilers and you have already given out a handful. At least the other posters had the decency to be vague.

Just continue the story since eventually once Act 2 is released in 2013 you’ll need to complete it if you want to progress to Act 2.

Just ignore what people say and decide for your self like I did. I personally had little problem with the story a side from how unorganized some parts of the story can be. Such as how some characters say nice to meet you for the first time but you already met them long before that mission.
I’m still sad how many people wanted the personal story to be about your Hero becoming famous and honored throughout Tyria for saving the world like a common Hero story when by now people should of realized that Anet is following the philosophy of “what makes a true hero is not his fame and glory but by his or her own actions.”

Why dont people already get it, Trahearne = Kormir 2.0
Useless the entire plot, sometimes on missions with you but never attacks or deals any damage, takes over all the the fame, no emotional connection with anyone at all, etc, etc~

When life gives you lemon, ask if its from a anime or manga.

I honestly do not mind this so much as the fact that a completely random character is tossed into the story and then treated as a major factor with a huge role to play and that my character just follows him for no real reason. If it had at least been someone that my character has worked with before it would have made a lot more sense, but as it is currently it just seems completely out of place.

However I think you are right and I will just have to play through it and see what happens. Hopefully it will get better further on.

I think Trahearne would had a better impressing on others if Anet made him appear during the early stages of the Personal Story before joining the Orders for all races since he does Travel the World to study and find a way to save Orr before he appeared in Claw Island. Sylvari players have a better impression on him because they got a chance to meet him early on and get to know him a bit before they joined the Orders but the other races did not. It would also help set the stage for the events of Claw Island because before he leaves he could have foreshadow the events of Claw Island before he moved on and then we meet him again in Claw Island.

EdwinLi, that certainly would’ve helped combat how jarring his entrance into the story is, particularly for non-Sylvari, but it’s just a small part of the problem. And I’m not sure how you can say this isn’t a common hero story, as it’s as common as you can get. There’s nothing about the personal story that really sets apart from your standard fantasy tale (and that’s okay). The whole issue with Trahearne isn’t so much a problem with the story itself, it’s a problem with how the story treats Trahearne (especially in comparison to you, the supposed main character).

“The most important thing in any game should be the player. We have built a game for them.”
That’s a direct quote from Ree Soesbee. The player does not feel important when the game repeatedly tells them that Trahearne is the famous, glorious hero who saved Tyria.

Well the game does have plenty of dialogue that shows that the NPCs you meet will see you as a hero but those are the normal Dialogues people would normally miss if they don’t take their time to talk to NPCs in the Story instances and mostly talk to the NPC before leaving the Story instance once you finish that story instance since that when most of the Dialogues shows how those NPCs recognize you as the real hero because they were there with you in those fights the NPCs you don’t meet talks about.

It may be small but at least it a start. I just hope Anet starts adding these kind of dialogues in the cutscenes more in Act 2 and higher Story Acts rather than having them as normal NPC dialogues you can easily miss if you’re not the type to take your time to talk to NPCs before leaving story missions so people would stop missing these kind of dialogues and make them feel like the story still about their heroes Personal point of view of the Main Story.
