"Commander, I need a word..."
Well first let me clarify one thing, he is not the “Fire Marshal” that would be someone who is in charge of investigating fires for fire departments. He is the Marshal of the Pact, a duty bestowed upon him by you, the player (not by choice but that’s the way the story plays out in the script). This is also why he calls upon you for advice, because he feels out of place and unworthy of the responsibility bestowed upon him. If you would have payed any attention to the story instead of pressing “skip to end” you would know this. You would also know what a first born is in the same manor.
He is a necromancer, and as a player who has played a necro through Orr, I can see how he managed to scout the area by himself while studying the risen and finding their weaknesses. Necros are awesome and all should bow to their greatness, or something.
As for the voice acting, I agree, terrible just like a majority of the voices in the game, but it’s a video game not a major motion picture so emphasis on acting is not that important. With that in mind, no need to go hiring new voice actors for a video game, it is what it is.
Firstborn = the first 12 sylvari who were born. They are the leaders of the sylvari. Trahearne was the first of the firstborne, making him a sort of first amongst equals. He’s essentially the sylvari equivalent of Queen Jennah, since the Pale Tree isn’t very mobile.
He’s managed to hang out in Orr because he’s a powerful necromancer.
He asks your advice because this is a video game.
Yes, the voice acting sucks. No, he shouldn’t have been bigger and more imposing. For one, he’s a sylvari, and for two, he’s a necromancer. Necromancers are supposed to be thin and sickly, with brooding eyebrows and a black cloak.
A better voice actor would probably have done leagues in making people like him more.
And a man who trusts no one is a fool.
We are all fools, if we live long enough.”

Character: If you read anything about Sylvari the firstborne are the first Sylvari to be born from the Pale Tree 25 years ago. Caithe is also a firstborne. A Wyld Hunt if I remember right is what Sylvari see in the dream (before they’re born) and it tells them what they’re supposed to do in life, Trahearne’s was to cleanse Orr. As for his past, he dedicated his 25 years of life to studying orr and is a wise scholar, he probably knows more about Orr than anyone, that’s one reason why he became Marshall. How did he survive? Same way you have throughout your story.
He seeks your advice because before the Pact was started you are his very trusted friend and he puts you second in command, you’re like an advisor.
Voice Acting: He never said it like that. He was giving a pretty good speech to the troops and when then dragon roared he said “Do you hear that? It is the dragon who is afraid!” inspiring the troops further. Most Sylvari don’t have alot of emotion because they’re, at least from what I can tell, a “serious” race if you will. Some are more emotional than others

Who says necromancers need to be thin? What about those norn and char necros I see running around? Surely you have some of those in your guild!
I am never sure why people dislike his voice acting so much. He’s a necromancer who has been hanging out all by himself in a dead place for years and years. He has no social skills. He’s a scholar not a military general. He has confidence issues. Of course he isn’t going to sound like Rytlock. His personality and back story would make a stronger more impressive voice ill-fitted. He’s supposed to sound awkward. At least that has always been my take.
That’s a refreshing take on it, Pasha, but I would think that would come out better in what he says or awkwardly does more than in dialogue that just sounds like it’s being read flatly.

Out of all the things you could point out, you pick the one that is least relevant to character and story.
First, “first born” is explained on Claw Island if you listen to what your mentor and Trahearne were saying. Wyld Hunt is also explained in the vision of future that the Pale Tree created later on.
Second, imagine if you play GW2 and spend over 20 years, 20 YEARS, in only the 3 Orr maps. You would be fairly familiar with Risens’ every movement. Moreover, Caithe has the wyld hunt of killing the Elder Dragons, so she might have accompanied Trahearne for a lot of time there before Edge of Steel was formed.
Third, if you were to study (technically) one kind of monster for over 20 years and not doing anything else which doesn’t have a relation to that, would you be familiar with commanding troops and making decisions? Most of the time Trahearne only follows advises from his tacticians if you pay attention to story lines at all. Only in times when there are multiple valid options would he ask for your advise.
Fact remains, his character is sub par for the main “hero” in the story…
He’s a scholar not a military general.
That’s exactly the problem.
He should be a scholar and advisor on Orr matters, not military commander of Pact forces.
That’s one of the most stupid plot twists in the whole history of game industry.

Yes, no one in real life ever has been forced into a military position. That’s totally unrealistic. /sarcasm
You’d be surprised at the despise people have to Trahaerne, and it’s justified here and there. I saw some change in his character as the story progressed, but not enough or not shown enough by him to justify him as an exemplary champion of the vigil. If you really wanna get kitten off about it more, Destiny’s Edge did squat during the Zhaitan fight, I guess they were having tea and biscuits in the lounge with Trahaerne being the waitress. Spend all that time getting them back together, through all the angst, not enough passion to warrant any hate regardless if you know the back story because of the books or not.
I wish they could of just had him be a side character, rather than a traveling companion, he’s just too much of a coward and a wimp to want to drag along, even with the blade. Even though he can barely handle a small number of risen without getting stomped, but I can solo champions just fine. If they incorporated him and DE into the last fight, having you jump to the other airships where you saw returning characters and decisions based on your personal storyline fighting against Zhaitan, each causing him damage with each hop, or inflicting way to make him weaker, it would of been a justifiable and enjoyable adventure. All Trahaerne did was speak for you a bit, gathered intelligence and acted as an adviser while you still made the important decisions, but instead it’s the other way around.
Trahaerne- Dragon bad, very bad. I have an idea how to fight and hurt him, cause I’m now not a coward. By the way commander, how should I do it, ‘cause I can’t even eat a meal by myself without someone telling me which side order to get? Oh, good idea, I agree. We’ll use big lasers and mass forces, and I’ll take a caeser salad as well.

Having played through the story on two level 80 characters I only have one main concern with Trahaerne. I mostly dislike the fact that it feels like he takes all the credit that my character works for. I feel like my character is just there and after meeting Trahaerne it starts to seem that it’s his personal story and less of mine.

Well, I get the feeling that that’s exactly the point. The only reason that Trahaerne is the leader of the Pact and not the player character is to give the lore someone to point to for the events of GW2 in any potential future references back.
In a single-player game, it’s an easy issue to handle. “Commander [Insert name and gender] Shepard did the thing, resulting in the current state of affairs!” or “The Dragonborn purged the land of all dragons, so now we can drink mead in peace!”
It’s much harder to refer back to events driven by the player character in an MMO. “And thus, a Charr/Human/Norn/Asura/Sylvari person of otherwise little note defeated Zhaitan!” It saves ANet a lot of potential future effort to just have Trahaerne take all the credit and point to him in any future lore.
I agree that it’s very frustrating to have what is pitched as “your personal story” be completely ninja’d by a subpar NPC who pretty much just shows up in the nick of time to steal the credit, but I understand why it was “necessary.”
Treehern with his mighty sword saladbowel didn’t strike me as the leader type. In fact he seemed like such a beta male I don’t know how he managed to stay alive in Tyria at all.
Really bad characterisation.
Someone needs to resurrect Koss, so he can educate the GW2 Male Characters on how to be MEN.
Koss’s first students that should be slapped into shape are Trahearne and Logan Thackeray

Firstly, Caladbolg is a real-life legendary sword, thought to be the source of the Excalibur myths no less.
Secondly, just because someone is introverted doesn’t make them unable to survive.

Apart from the poor charm from this first born sunflower, and getting an awesome sword, his character annoyed me throughout the entire storyline, I hated everything about this walking plant, mainly, HE NEVER SHUTS UP! His responses to battles are simply kitten we decided to attack the Risen, and all he can say; “This won’t end well”. Then don’t tag along, shut up, and come after I slaughter everyone, whiny little plant. I personally thought trahearne was more annoying with his constant babling then the president’s daughter from Resident evil 4 (Think it was 4)..the that keeps shouting LEON!….
Do you even lift, bro?
I really dislike this character. What could make him better? An option to turn trahearne over to zaithan. Many lives can be spared when trahearne talks the dragon into a ethernal sleep of boredom. Honestly, a character with humor would have been better. But I don’t know why he even exists, why can’t the player be the general. I don’t understand why they choose to make this empty character. Must have some kind of technical reason.
Brilliant!
Many lives can be spared when Trahearne talks the dragon into a eternal sleep of boredom.
LOL!
I like his voice. But it WOULD be better if the VA puts more emotion into it. His current tone is more fitting for a funeral speech giver.
Just dying to see the moment in a future personal story where Trahearne once again quips ‘This won’t end well’, and dies…
Pact needs a new Marshal, oh hey Commander, let’s promote you to be the hero from now on

A powerful necromancer? That’s a laugh. I think he may have been strong, but giving him Saladbolg screwed up his skilltray.

no, honestly, “being a whimp” is not always a bad trait in leaders. i welcome it in real-life military men. being too “whimpy” to push that shinny red nuclear warhead button is a favorable trait when it comes to survival of our species :P
get over yourself, we’re not cavemen any more. it’s not about who has the bigger stick.

Despite what you may think, it’s got nothing to do with testosterone. However, in context when dealing with leading a unified force against magic-devouring monstrosities that corrupt everything just by breathing/flying over, second guessing and lacking a spine is an issue. I mean “This isn’t going to end well” and “This won’t be a sortie, it’ll be a massacre” is -not- what you want to hear from the leader of the unified force and supposed expert on just what to do. It’s terrible for morale.
I’m beginning to think based on this post and others that you want it to be fueled by male testosterone, for whatever crazy reason.

What a incredible sexist remark. Only because one guy thinks a male character in a game is whimpy doesn’t mean he is a dumb caveman and it certainly doesn’t mean that every guy things that. A lady friend of mine for example doesn’t like Logan because she things he is a wuss.
I personally dislike Trahearne because he is a Mary-Sue, he comes in knows everything and everyone and every NPC loves him. I would feel the same if he was female. In fact, my most despised character in GW lore is Gwen, undoubtly female and drama queen.
Maybe there are people whose dislike is based on a characters gender, but that would be the minority. So please stop your generalization, take an example in a Norn, they never judge groups only individuals. You could learn much from that.

I’ll be nice and assume you’re being honest. Sarcasm is easy to tell when you are speaking, but in simple text and given how the internet can be, you have to assume sarcasm isn’t happening. Unless someone is saying Matt Ward is a wonderful writer and makes balanced codices, then the sarcasm is obvious.
i think you should look up the definition of sarcasm.
What Rhinzual said, also I saw that same statement by you in another thread. Either you made the same joke twice or you were serious. I thought it was the letter. So sorry if I jumped at conclusions. Sexism is just something that really annoys me, no mater who it comes from.
If I could summon 10 elite Necro minions at once, I bet I could solo wander Orr pretty easily like Trahearne.
If I could summon 10 elite Necro minions at once, I bet I could solo wander Orr pretty easily like Trahearne.
that’s actually a good point.
if there’s one single thing that bugs me about Trahearne is why his necromancy is never addressed (or at least i didn’t notice it).
there’s only one mission where he summons his minions and there’s nothing after that. he just swings his sword.
did i miss some point where he gives up necromancy for the greater good or something?
If I could summon 10 elite Necro minions at once, I bet I could solo wander Orr pretty easily like Trahearne.
Given how easily flesh golems go down under concentrated firepower, I doubt that’s the case.

Yes… and exactly the sort of guy you DON’T want as a military leader. As others have said it before, lacking decisiveness when there are undead monsters gnawing on your ankle isn’t a very good survival trait.
A leader must ALWAYS keep his cool, even when he is terrified inside. His soldiers lives and more depend on it. I remember reading once how this WWII U-Boat captain always liked to pretend he was casually reading a book when his submarine was being bombed by depth charges, even though he was terrified since he knew they could all get killed any second. But he didn’t show it. Because he was the captain and his men looked up to him. If he suddenly went fretting and going “this won’t end well”, they would all panic and most likely die.
But he didn’t. He kept his composure and his men took solace from that in an otherwise desperate situation.

Fact remains, his character is sub par for the main “hero” in the story…
uh…. -you- are the main ‘hero’ in the story.
No you’re not. You’re the main lackey.
actually, playing as a sylvari, trahearne isn’t as bad as when I played my charr
in fact, the path that I took makes the quartet of the player, trahearne, carys, and tegwen feel like a group of friends off to save the world, where you are the party member that leaves for personal growth (think final fantasy IV, nearly all of the characters leave the party at some point only to return later as a total kitten) and appears for the finale, where the other three go and help the war effort.
the end result is that most of the characters are introduced or mentioned before their roles expand significantly, trahearne’s importance is justified since sylvari learn more of his story, and most importantly I don’t feel bitter about giving him the KITTENING SWORD (seriously, I feel SORRY for him that he’s lumped with that piece of rubbish)
plus, you get the vibe that he’s asking for your advice because he trusts you, and not because it’s a game that needs you to poke the plot with a stick if it slows
I didn’t like Trahearne any better when I played sylvari. Carys and Tegwen are all right, and I liked Laranthir of the Wild but I still think Trahearne has poor voice acting and I couldn’t ever care about the character. Meeting him earlier didn’t alleviate that at all.
