Could someone explain why...
Agree, this was just dumb, why have a Solo story if you need a group to complete it!
Yep. It’s pretty much left me not bothering with any of the story for my other characters after reaching this point with my main. Why bother? I don’t want forced groupage.
This needs rectified.
So many complaints about this and not one dev response after all this time. That’s just sad.
To be fair, this is an MMO. You are kind of expected to play with other people at some point. And its not like the final story mission requires a full team.
If anything, knowing how disappointing the final battle currently is, should make you thankful if you haven’t been able to play it yet. The longer that disappointing ending is delayed, the better.

All the dungeon story modes are supposed to be part of your personal story, just a different branch. Not something put up on the upper right corner between other personal story missions, but something that you can do on the side. You can pretty much tell by the level of your character, when you get the mails from that Herald guy or your mentor, when you would need to tear yourself away between missions and go make progress with the story dungeons.
Just because the upper right corner tells you to do a dungeon story for the first time at the last dungeon, last mission, doesnt mean that you were not suposed to do any others before it. Do players really need this much hand-holding?

Mostly because this is opinion and conjecture and not an “actual” issue.
It’s also the final piece… it’s not like it’s “blocking” you from completing huge sections of content.
I dunno, this is a tough one. On one hand, I get the complaint. It’s jarring being able to solo content all the way through your PS but the last part for those people who don’t want to do group content.
On the other, I strongly feel Zhaitan shouldn’t be a PS boss. The dungeon fits him well.
They should have ended your PS at the Cleansing of Orr, I think. Given you your PS completion award and then got rid of the Green Star in the top right, but clearly explained that Zhaitan is in a story dungeon if you want to get the end of Zhaitan’s story. For the story parts after Zhaitan, they could possibly send the player mail after they complete Arah that instructs them to go to Fort Trinity, so they can see the ‘we have more dragons to go!!!’ cutscene with Destiny’s Edge.
Not the complete ideal solution, but it’s better than what we have now.
… I can solo my entire personal story, until I get to Victory or Death? Putting it in a dungeon requiring a full group is a serious design flaw(further compounded by putting the entrance to the story instance behind a group event).
I agree with your first line.
As said this is an mmo. you have every right to complain. They should have forced you to do things in a group way before that point.
In my opinion the difficulty of storymode dungeons should be lowered, but also be an integral part of your personal story. So when you hit level 30 you NEED to do AC to continue the story. Off course this demands some story rewriting so it fits all together. (something in the line of that your chosen order wants you in, IF you help Eir to do whatever spoiler she does in AC).
The moment that you are forced to team up with others is way too late indeed.
Arise, opressed of Tyria!

Why do you think the fact that this is an mmo means it should contain forced grouping?
“Massively Multi-player Online” just means many players on one server. It does not indicate that they should be forced to group.
My main issue with the group thing was that it suddenly wasn’t my character in the cutscenes because I wasn’t the party leader. It was unpleasantly jarring to go through the whole personal story, and then be merely a mute bystander when everything came to fruition.
The issue could have been easily avoided by simply splitting the lines between different characters instead of assigning them all to the party leader (i.e. whoever is in the Character One slot speaks the first line, Character Two speaks the second line, etc.)
As it was, that aspect was pretty disappointing to me.
