I’ve been leveling three characters have them all in the 50 to 55 range.

I don’t really care for the personal story and find it to be more of a PITA.

Do we really need to finish them? Is there a reason later on? Something I won’t be able to do if I haven’t finished them?

I find it more fun to level up doing them, but I guess you don’t “have” to.

Not doing them doesn’t bar you from anything really, except the orders and their armors. I prefer doing them for the occasional upgrade in armor or weapons during leveling and the experience. Quite often they give over half a level’s worth of XP which I find quite nice.

No, you don’t have to. My main got to 80 having completed only up to lv 30 of the personal story.

Like Tjihyana says, the personal quests often give good exp and on-level gear, and encourage you to go to other zones. A few give black lion keys, but otherwise, you can level all the way without touching personal story, and can always go back to it afterward if you feel you want to do it.

You won’t be able to get the Order/pact skins, that’s about it.

I hate the personal quests personally. Now I just do them up to the point where you get a back piece then quit.
