Possible Spoilers below, fair warning!

I am playing as a human elementalist who joined the priory. I have had a few small issues with personal story quests along the way, but nothing until I got to this one. I chose to fight the Mouth of Zhaitan head on, which turned out to be huge mistake. I cannot figure out how to kill him. The boss has several boons, a health regen (which never goes away), and some stacking protection buffs which basically make him invulnerable. The protection buff does wear off, the only problem is that there are two infinitely spawning high HP mobs that bring ‘re-ups’ on the boon every 30-60 seconds or so. I have attempted to kill these two mobs over and over again, while rushing down to throw some damage on the boss, but after 40 minutes of doing this he was only down to about 75% health. I am doing something terribly wrong.

The three npcs that are with you, shout something about only hitting from range, then they promptly die because they have no AI. So you are there solo, with an invulnerable boss that gets boons from infinitely spawning mobs.

How do you do this? I am completely stumped. I have no abilities that can remove boons. Have not been able to get anyone to help me in mapchat, and to be honest I am not sure even two people could do this. This mission is labeled as 75 and I am now 80 and appropriately geared, but still no luck.

Any help is appreciated

I had some trouble with this too. Went in, see the mouth, it summons all its spectral guard things which start circling it, NPC says to hit it from range and promptly charges into melee range and dies, all the other NPCs die, my pet dies, my other pet dies, I wind up cowering behind a pillar on the opposite side of the room from the stairs with a dead pet.

After all this happened, I picked off the circling ghost things from behind the pillar with my longbow. (Basically be behind the pillar in such a way that the boss can’t hit you but you can hit the ghost things at some point in their patrol.) I don’t know what I had intended to achieve with this (I think I just wanted to accomplish something), but once I had killed them all the NPCs un-deaded themselves and we started going to town on the boss, which had lost a few of his buffs upon losing his bodyguards. After this it wasn’t hard at all, I don’t remember doing anything outside the normal strategies for killing a tough monster.

I do agree though, the first time I tried this quest I just said “bugger this” and went off to 100% a charr zone. It looked impossible. xD

Hendever thank you so much. I was thinking the same thing…at one point I tried that, killing his guards but I died and forgot about doing it again. I will definitely try this later!

You also need to kill the one/two undead who come from behind every so often, as they’re carrying food for the mouth. I believe if one makes it, the floating weapons return. (I didn’t kill one and the weapons came back)

Definitely don’t forget about what Rylla just mentioned. Kill the couriers, because otherwise the Mouth will regenerate its health.

I didn’t realize how difficult this mission was until I heard some stories from some other players who were playing as caster professions like yourself. I ran through this mission with my Ranger without too much trouble (although the charr NPC heroes died pretty fast in this part, making them both pretty useless). Probably because I primarily use longbow on my Ranger anyway, so I never encountered the Mouth at close range until he was down to his last 30% of health. (By then, all of the spectral guards were gone.)

I learned the hard way though, that the couriers bringing the magical objects do actually lead to health regeneration and abilities for the Mouth. (It logically made sense, but I chose to ignore the couriers at first anyway for whatever reason. It led to him regenerating about 50% of his health.)

Bottom line: stick with range weapons, kill the couriers, keep attacking the mouth.

p.s. with the couriers, you’ll want to start attacking them as soon as you see them walking down the stairs, to ensure that you’ll be able to kill them before they get to the Mouth.

Sincerely,
Sinful Panda

I just tried this and I’m stumped. I am a ranger, but seriously I don’t know how the above poster managed as a ranger because I couldn’t see any sort of damage accumulating at all on the mouth. I kept killing the undead bringing food which left very little time to try and get in a hit or two on the mouth. Plus you spend quite a bit of time just trying to dodge his attacks. The NPC’s are useless. But I will definitely try to kill the stuff circling him and see if I have any better luck that way. I sure wish I had chosen the other option.

Just finished this one, as a thief, when he summons the swords, try to kill all of those, you can hide behind a pillar to avoid his attacks and kill the swords. After I killed the swords, both of the npcs with me, they had both died, ressed automatically and one tanked him, I ran into melee, and fought him, he did respawn the swords, so killing the couriers is good idea, I did not.

After second wave of swords, I just killed him, one of the bull guys tanked him and I just dps’d.

Huzzah! That strategy was a success. It went exactly like that^^ I killed first wave of floaty swords, npcs rezzed and started beating on the boss. I killed the couriers during this time and dps’d the boss when I could. I used both my elementals which helped. A second wave of swords spawned, npcs died. I killed these just like the first, npc’s rezzed then we nuked him down.

Thanks again guys!

I was successful as well. I’m so glad to be done with that mission! I picked off the floating swords, npcs rezzed just like described above. The first time I tried to range him but didn’t quite finish him off. The second time I decided to run in and use all my traps and conditions. He wasn’t even able to reach his chest of “food.” We killed him easily that time. Thanks for all the great tips. =)

Yeah, there is always a slow start where you wait for the barely disguised undead to reveal themselves. (frequently they say something less than discrete as you enter, like “Kill everything!”) No way to change the outcome of that though—I tried several times.

Unfortunately the circling shields appear to be immune to AOE DOT attacks—I killed couriers for an hour dropping Smite in their path after each courier kill but when I checked back they were all at full health. It looked like they were taking damage though, so maybe they just go to full health when you get too far away. However, playing a melee player you have to leave the area in order to chase down the couriers. Realistically you have to run at least to the top of the stairs to have time to wear the couriers down before they get to the mouth. If it is just a matter of not being able to go farther than this without the shields refreshing, then some cue to tip the player off on what is happening would be good. Maybe the mouth could use their “yeild to the power of Zhaitan!” line when the shields regenerate to give the player a clue that something is happening.

As it is, it is nearly impossible as a non-ranged DPS class to continuously kill couriers, dodge attacks, and damage the shields long enough to wear the mouth down. Eventually you’ll either make a mistake and die or make a mistake and let a courier through. I asked for someone to help me but I then got tipped off that eventually he stops eating. Waiting for this makes it a lot easier to win, but feels cheap. It would be better if the shields just didn’t regenerate/weren’t immune or if there was just a bit more time between couriers to give melee players time to run back and forth.

I agree that this was the most difficult and annoying mission of all the ones I did for my personal story. I think a lot of people haven’t chosen this option; so it hasn’t gotten as much attention as some of the others. I definitely think the devs need to take a look at it and make some adjustments.

The NPCs run right into battle with the mouth and die. Instead it would seem wiser to have them pause and discuss a plan of attack. “Looks like we’ll have to range him” or something to that effect. Then the NPCs could actually be helpful. For example they could work on keeping the servants from reaching the mouth while the player takes on the main attack.

The fight involves a pretty complicated raid mechanic which you need to observe carefully and discover in order to finish it smoothly. This is already hard while you are constantly busy to avoid all his AoE attacks. But this is not a raid boss, not everyone does raid, and you are not expected to study or even be aware of raid mechanics when you enter the story instance. That part telling you to hit from range is fine and that actually helps, but they should add the other parts including the sword and the courier too. Current implementation assumes you are someone who are always aware of raid mechanics and have decent range gear, which is a huge mistake. Luckily I have an exotic ranged weapon even though I use melee for over 90% of my fights, if I only had a masterwork, I guess I would have to cry and teleport back, get something betterpay the waypoint fee to come back.

Creating a solo content assuming the player knows everything you implemented is just some sort of self-centered design, as I can see from many parts of the story quests, which makes them extremely difficult while the creator does not realize at all.

I just tried this one alone and failed. After reading the tips here I grouped up with some other guy (warrior) who also had problems before. We stood behind the pillars, killed all the summoned weapons and finally killed the mouth of zhaitan in about 1-2 minutes…

I am a Necro with full defense traits and gear, I ignored the mobs feeding him. I didn’t notice any reason to kill them. I started out attacking him, all npcs eventually died. I got low in health, tried to res the npcs, and decided that the weapons were a bigger threat. Killed them and that instantly ressed all npcs. Plenty of damage and quick npc recovery.
