I won’t reveal any spoilers here.

That being said, the final encounter in my personal story was horribly anti-climactic, awkward, *dis*engaging and unrewarding.

The fight was “on-rails”, did not really engage the characters, was awkwardly executed and provided lousy rewards.

I am truly disappointed someone(s) at ArenaNet believed this final encounter was worthy of shipping.

Mechanics wise yes, as for plot and what goes down, its decent enough compared to the rest of the story.

the gameplay was the problem, but I liked their thinking. it didnt make sense that players themselves on foot would be able to engage zhaitan. the problems just suffered and didnt make sense.

You do know Zhiatan is actually bugged? Anet is still trying to get him to work the way he was meant to fight us. Along with the end Story weapons we can only get 1 per character for completing personal story.

I did not know this. If this is true, I would question what producer / developer would be willing to ship the game with full knowledge the final encounter in the game, the culmination of the entire “personal” story, is horribly bugged.

In my mind, a bug like that would be a complete show-stopper. This is not a massive raid boss and does not have all the complexities of one. No other MMO would release a bugged raid boss that runs out, does nothing and lets you nuke him down. Silly.

I just finished my personal story last night, and boy was Zhiatan a let down.
Although to be fair, Arenanet have never been very good at endgame bosses, it’s always flash over substance, this battle was the pinnacle of this.

Zhiatan looks amazing, and you effectively stand around shooting spit balls at him.
While I understand the cinematic nature of the encounter, and the technical limitations as a result, you have to do better then this.

But it is never to late to fix it.


I would recommend that since you can’t really have Zhiatan move around a whole lot, that you have the airship your on move instead, or rather give the illusion of movement.
Such as orbiting Zhiatan.

Also the mechanics you have on the turrets need a lot of work, just turning the turret by 45 degree angles and firing is as lazy as it gets, what a cop out.
If they worked more like Trebuchet, where you had to aim and charge for distance, then that would be more engaging.

You could even take it a step further and have the players at this point have to take over other roles of running and maintaining the airship.
Such as one could be the pilot, banking towards or away (in one of three set orbits) from Zhiatan, while he lashes out trying to grab the airship, at which point the players have to cut off the tenticals (3) holding the airship in place (and preventing it from firing).

He could also lob undead chunks that spawn minions if not avoided or shot down before impact. A afterburner could be one of the skills for the pilot, to speed up temporarily to avoid getting hit.

Also there could be mini events he spawns, such as ‘Their attacking the engine room, get down there and help out!’, where you fight off the minions and fix any damage to the engine. Otherwise your a sitting duck for more attacks.

You could have people defend the ammo storage room, otherwise you can’t attack, or force people to have to reload the guns manually by carrying rounds to the gun emplacements.
Perhaps you could set it up where you only need one or two people on gunnery, by making them command a row of guns rather then just one, and have everyone else split up doing other jobs to keep the airship running.
(and maybe have the left side defend against attacking dragon champions)

The last one idea could be having some in charge of opening and closing hatches, to barricade in/out minions so they don’t infect other parts of the ship, isolate/extinguish fires, and move NPC’s around to the areas they are needed.

One pilot, two on gunnery, one on engines/ammo, one on hatches/internal defense.
That would be infinitely more engaging and interesting then ‘ kitten derp, press 2 to win’.

Lastly, the actual fight against Zhiatan (esp if the battle was more like the above), should last longer. It took my pug about 5 minutes to drop him, with little effort. Hell, the Mouth of Zhiatan took three times as long, and we wiped multiple times.
Why was his minion more of a challenge then he was?
20-25 minutes should be good.

Oh, and his death needs to be made a little more apparent, him falling off the building didn’t scream ‘we killed him’ to me. (I was genuinely confused, I was expecting him to explode or disintegrate or something)
I want to see him go out with a bang, not a whimper.

I would really like to see the battle get revamped in the future, as is it’s just lazy and kitten, it looks good, but like a lemon, the wheels fall off and then engine explodes the second you try to drive it off the lot.
Now the battle against Reiko (GW1), now that was a fun boss battle.

You know, I don’t think he was bugged at all, compare how that fight is to say tequatl or shatterer to give you an idea of how they concepted dragon fights to simply be, dragon is a set piece with 1-2 moves (usually breath, fly) and you shoot it with cannons for a while and then it dies and you get merch food. I think ALL the dragon fights are disappointing, ANet could have done so much more with them and I sincerely hope they do in the future with the other generals and dragons.
